Oh, Donna...

I'm never going to stop missing you. You were the original Runaway Bride. The only fiery redhead NuWho ever needed. The most important woman in the entire universe.

Fuck Moffat for shamelessly copying your awesomeness, peeing on it, and setting in on fire in the absolute shitshow that was Amy Pond and her entire story arc.

Yea, I'm hatin' on Amy. So what. Moffat is an unoriginal douche.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-01-27 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Donna indeed.

I can't even speak for Amy Pond because after Donna I was just too gutted to even watch anymore. I didn't want a new young redhead, I wanted Donna back. :(

Wow, I'm starting to wonder if it's at all possible for people to like something without tearing down everything around it. Are people really so insecure and self-loathing that the only way they can justify their own preferences and opinions is to make everything else seem awful, so that the thing they like is the only acceptable choice?

Amy was absolutely nothing like Donna, her existence has nothing to do with Donna, and really? "The only fiery redhead NuWho ever needed"? You...you actually said those words out loud? Like, you actually thought that was a remotely acceptable thing to say? Hey, I'd like to introduce to about 8 different Classic Who companions who also bore vague and not-so-vague similarities to Donna and yet didn't detract from Donna's own unique awesomeness at all or make her a copy.

Oh, and as if Rose and Martha weren't the most important women in the universe too in Parting of the Ways and Last of the Time Lords. I think that's what a companion generally is, y'know. Doesn't detract from Donna's own importance.

(IA about Amy's storyarc though :\ Which is a pity because she had a lot of potential but noooooooo...exploring potential would be boring...)

Dude, if you criticized Amy and Moffat in a discussion that was actually about her, I'd have thought you had a very good point and maybe enjoyed ranting about it with you.

But bringing her up and bashing Moffat in a secret that has absolutely jack-shit to do with that in a ludicrously contrived and nonsensical reaching attempt to make Donna look better by tearing down Amy (when Donna is PLENTY awesome to stand all on her own, thank you very much) just makes you look like a bitter, sniveling, immature whiner who can't enjoy anything without pulling imaginary rivals out of your ass to bash instead; and who refuses to understand the concept of "he had about 40 companions, yo".

Oh, come off it, Donna wasn't that original — Lucie Miller from the Eighth Doctor's Big Finish Audios came first. Sure, she wasn't a redhead, but she was a lot more like Donna than Amy was like Donna, and Lucie came first.

Donna was great, and Catherine Tate did a fantastic job with the role, but Donna's archetype wasn't that original and Amy was a completely different character. Like her or not (I'm pretty ambivalent on her, if I'm completely honest), but they weren't the same and I didn't read Amy as having been created to be the same. I'm also going to agree with the anon above me about how ... pointless your rant about Amy comes across as. Seriously, what was the point? There's no fun in focussing in whatever it is that drives you up the wall about another (unrelated) character and another writer. Celebrate Donna as a character, man! Fuck knows she didn't get the ending she deserved.

... that's really gross and I have no clue what you're talking about since Amy was nothing like Donna. Not to mention I love them both.

Warning: Journey's End rant below, may cause kerfuffle

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with everything you said about Donna's awesomeness, and I agree that Moffat is a douche (although I have no idea where you pulled that insane troll logic Donna/Amy comparison out of), but if I have to be completely honest...RTD is a way, way, WAY bigger douche, in my eyes, for what he did to Donna in Journey's End.

It was appalling and despicable and I can't believe a guy who created a character as great as Donna thought it was okay to tell the audience "lololol now she's a totally worthless lost cause and her life is meaningless without the Doctor and this is tragic and sad because it makes the Doctor sad, never mind how it affects the woman Donna, oh no, Donna is just a plot point to further the Doctor's deep and intelligent manpain."

More than that, it means that no matter how much I adore Donna, her ending will always be hanging over her character whenever I watch her, I'll always know that everything she learns, every wonder she experiences, every bit of wonderful character development and insight she shows throughout her series is lost forever.

Ugh. Women in Refrigerators doesn't begin to cover it.

....wow. If you dislike Amy, that's totally fine - there are some characters I hate too, everyone's different - but this comment and the way you come across in it with your reaching and viciousness is really kind of revolting.

I mean, maybe I'm extra offended because I love both Amy and Donna (although I definitely love Donna more, and btw, she can hold her own as a character perfectly well without being compared to anyone), but you could be talking about two characters who I both hated, or tearing down a character I hated to prop up one I love, and this comment wouldn't be any less small-minded and mean-spirited.

To those who defend Amy - imagine if she were male. Suddenly, forcing herself on the Doctor and slapping people repeatedly (because "I'm Scottish, tee-hee!") doesn't sound so "fiesty", does it?

I always saw her as being like a sister to him too :) Kind of an adopted sister, because their relationship always seemed a lot like they were both filling in a gap in each other's lives. Their relationship is my favorite Doctor + companion relationship ever.

Favorite Ten and Donna scene, anybody?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Fucking wildcat-whatever and her repulsive negativity. People like her are the pus-filled bacterial infections of fandom. I can't describe how little patience I have for bashers.

Anyway, lets ignore her and focus on how much we love Ten and Donna, okay guys? What's your favorite scene between the two of them? Mine is a toss-up between the charades across the closed office in Partners in Crime and the bit where the Doctor thinks Donna is leaving him in The Sontaran Stratagem, only to realize she meant that she wanted to just go home for a minute to see her mum and grandad, and she calls him a dumbo.

Argh, why must every Doctor Who secret descend into negativity and wank on here?

Anyway, I FEEL YOU OP. Also, I think one of the reasons I miss Donna so much (other than her being just brilliant) is that she was also, ironically, disappointing in a way: her arc was cut short and erased right when she gained self-worth and started believing in herself, and the whole of season 4 was so overhung by the Doctor's angst that she never got a chance to completely live up to her full potential.

I really, really, really wish that she and Ten had gotten another season together before she left and he regenerated - of course it was never going to happen because RTD was gunning for Ten's meltdown in Waters of Mars, and the meltdown in Waters of Mars would never have happened if Donna was around to have anything to say about it (and Ten would have been too happy for RTD's tastes, I suppose). But a girl can dream can't she? *sigh*

Favorite Ten and Donna scene redux (now sans negativity)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So the anon above criticized someone for negativity by being negative and derailed their own thread. People are silly.

So, here's Favorite Ten and Donna scenes part 2! What's your favorite scene between Ten and Donna? For me, nothing will ever quite top their first shouting match in the TARDIS at the beginning of The Runaway Bride. Started off with a real bang, those two :)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading this secret I'm suddenly curious: what exactly is the difference between a close-friends relationship and a "like brother and sister" relationship? Is it a degree of closeness, or some specific dynamic at work?

I thought they were thought of as brother and sister due to the way they introduced themselves. (ie. Roman surnames and all of that) I don't have the episodes on me right now, but I was thinking that it indicated that they were brother and sister.

I loved Donna's bestie relationship with the Doctor. Honestly, this is how I want all companions to be. The romantic drama with Rose and Martha just filled me with all kinds of secondhand embarrassment. I loved the fact that Rory and Amy were a committed and mostly content with each other married couple.
