So, the good news:

I'm not pregnant, and I got my period (almost a month late, but hooray!)

The bad news:

I had a blood test and there's all sort of weird stuff going on like vitamin deficiencies and possible markers for a viral infection. So, looks like the period might be a symptom of something else, not the actual main problem.

In any case, I'll need more test, but at least now I know.

I have a job interview tomorrow. I haven't had one in a long time and I'm scared. I want this job. It's not the best, it's retail, but I need some kind of income. There are a bunch of other candidates interviewing before me though. :(

Textbook woes

I hate plastic wrapped textbooks that my college book store sells. Usually they include "access codes" to online stuff that we hardly ever use, and once the plastic is opened it can't be sold back, therefore you can't buy it used. And, of course, the price is like, $250+. And knowing my luck, after I buy it, we'll only use the online stuff like, twice, even though we are required to buy it.

How much of a scam are college textbooks anyway, ugh. and fuck the professors that require the shitty ones or make you buy books that you don't even use.

I'm the OP of the rec thread from yesterday, and I just wanted to thank everyone (in both the related threads) who recced fics, because I read most of them in a binge and I think I am a convert. So thank you!

Military "advice"

I'm in my early twenties, and I've been wanting to join the military (I live in the U.S.) for a few years now. For a number of reasons I was unable to join the Army ROTC program at my university, so while I am well-versed in military processes and the like, I've not had official officer training or anything. I would like to be an officer if possible (but wouldn't mind going in as enlisted).

Anyway, awhile ago my dad told me that his Army buddy said that if I have a college degree, I can go into the military as an officer right off the bat. I think my dad misunderstood what his friend was saying, because being an officer requires special training (which is what ROTC is for). But my dad seems convinced that I don't need ROTC to be an officer, as long as I have a degree in something.

Is he right? I'm genuinely curious, and I haven't found much information about it online. I just figured - like I said - that in order to go in as an officer, you'd need officer training. (FTR, I was initially wanting to join the Air Force, but I'm willing to join any branch; I know each branch has their own procedures and stuff so if my dad is correct about one or more of them, I'd love to know.)

Categorizing fic

I remember seeing this brought up in a secret, but I don't remember when or what the general consensus was. But now that I've got an Ao3 account, I've started moving my fic over there, and I'm having a hard time figuring out whether it should be gen or m/f.

It's this HP fic in which Arthur Weasley finds Percy after a suicide attempt and ends up reading through his diary at the hospital. Percy's relationship with Penelope Clearwater is pretty integral to the plot, but she never actually appears outside of a photograph and diary entries. And the entries are just Percy's reaction to things that have happened.

But the crux of the story is in Arthur's reaction to all this new information. So, gen because of that, or m/f because Percy/Penelope exists? Right now I've got it at m/f, but I'm just not sure that fits.

good internship junk

So for my final semester for my masters degree, I need to do an internship. I landed one in a college near me, with one of their research departments. I'm a researcher on a couple of projects, mostly dealing with social media communications during crisis events, or developing social media use for one of the public sectors.

Honestly, I'm finding the work pretty interesting. I just spent two hours chewing on their crippled survey (lesson: never let engineers design social surveys), and researching other countries' use of twitter to update citizens about traffic problems compared to our state's usage. It's challenged my foreign language skills (as I researched all of these countries in their native languages).

But I have had this niggling little idea in the bak of my brain. I wonder if years ago, I wouldn't have touched this kind of work because I would have thought that it wasn't interesting. I don't know if my finding it interesting means I matured as a person, or if I'm more boring in general.

But I like the idea that I'm part of a fledgling project that might indeed influence my entire state, and mainstream the sort of sagging culture of government and infrastructure. Best of all is that this may turn into a paid job in the future!

Idk, I guess I just wanted to share my good new and happiness.

I love this movie so goddamn much, but I think I'm glad it doesn't have a fandom. Because for all the deserved props that I imagine for Whistler, pretty sure haters would be up in arms over some slight they imagine lives in the existence of Crease and Elizabeth.
