started new job as a teaching assistant

So I have a problem. I just started work as a Teacher's Aide in a special education class. I am certified to teach, but have not taught as a teacher since I graduated (2 years ago!). So I was hoping to ease into teaching by working as an aide and then moving on to a teacher (because I changed states as well, so there are different teaching standards/ways).

BUT THIS CLASSROOM IS SO AWFUL. Maybe it will get better, this is just my first day. But right now it is just....mind numbing. The children are Learning Disabled and Emotionally Disturbed (but not severely). They have 7 hour long periods. The teacher makes them do a worksheet (or look up definitions) based on whatever subject they are supposed to be in. Then they can get on the computer to play math games.

And that is it. That is all he does. No hands on, no different learning styles, no structured teaching at all. And this isn't the first classroom I have had like that. My student teaching was done in a classroom like that (MY lessons were the only non-worksheet, hands on things they did). And a Sped class I subbed for was like that.

So, is this just the status quo? Should I just ignore all the stuff they taught me in college? And this isn't the same school. My student teaching was done in another state (I moved after college)! I don't even know who I would ask about this? My principal who JUST hired me? "Yeah, I know you have been working with this guy for 10 years but he is pretty awful." It just annoys me that is spend half my time staring at my desk because I have nothing to do.

Tl:Dr. Education system sucks. And I don't know what do as a teacher's assistant.

My friend was recently trying to get me into pretty little liars when we got to an episode where the main characters were threatened via a message in a fortune cookie. I couldn't watch any more after that.

I work at a newspaper in the middle of the US, so while the DC Navy Yard shooting isn't exactly in our backyard, obviously it's the lead story in the paper, and I'm designing the front page.

Now, I don't feel like I've personally experienced racism in my life. I'm reasonably young and I don't think it's racist when the telemarketers break out the hispanic accents, and if anything my minority status has opened far more doors for me than it's closed (which, far as I know, are none).

So when it comes dealing with everyday racism and casual racism, most of my experience comes from hearing all the talk about it places like here and elsewhere. And I've absorbed that and tried to make use of it. It's why I've become known around the office as that person who's all "Are you *sure* gypped is the word you want to use? You know 'uppity' has a history and probably doesn't mean what you think it means, so maybe you shouldn't use it to describe Michelle Obama..."

But when I was designing this page, I realized I had set it up so that there was the mug of the suspect, who is black, and then a photo of three white officers leaving the scene. I immediately started to question whether I was perpetuating stereotypes and went looking for photos of some POC officers (but didn't really find any in general, let alone ones that were compelling enough for Page One). And then I literally spent 10 minutes at my desk agonizing over what I should.

Which is when I came to the determination that I was letting not just activism but INTERNET activism get in the way of my job. Because it's not my job to make sure the front page makes everybody feel good about themselves. It's my job to show in pictures and words what happened -- and what happened is this guy (allegedly) killed 12 people and these three other people were some of the first to respond.

But I'm still sitting here on my dinner break questioning whether I made the right choice or if I should change it when I go back in.

What's your biggest flaw?

And how do you try to overcome it?

Mine is that I'm a total narcissist. I have no idea how to fix this, but every time I realize how self-absorbed I'm being I try really hard to focus on my friends instead. But then I go right back to being all "me me me". I forget so many things my friends tell me and I talk about myself waaaay too much.

Secret 1 - Fandom ship wars

For years, I've been a fan of a pairing that's hated. Hated because its fandom is oversized and notorious for bashing, wank, stomping on canon, and starting one-sided shipwars. Naturally, I hated the rival ship. It was more canon, more popular and its fans always seemed like the sane and reasonable ones. Always the victims of our bullshit. This badly chafed my ass.

So instead of a more mature alternative, I trolled an anon community, with an obvious strawman persona that shipped the pair I hated, and hated the pair I shippied. Just to feel better about myself and maybe gather up some counterarguments. Much of the community knew I was trolling, but a good number fell for it. I would sometimes feel bad for giving a bad reputation to my hated ship's fandom, but once my precious One True Pairing got slandered I went right back to trolling.

Then I tried trolling a different community, which was loaded with fans who hated my One True Pairing. Everyone who replied to my bait saw right through me, and one of them knew exactly who I was and what I was doing.

That incident was so humiliating for me, that I think about it almost every day, and get depressed over it.

Bonus secret: I'm almost eighteen.
