David Gilmour (winner of the 2005 Governer General's Award and longlisted for the 2013 Giller Prize) only teaches "very serious heterosexual guys" in his modern short fiction class at the University of Toronto.

He thinks female writers are "not interesting" except for Virginia Woolf and that is why he doesn't teach female writers. Even then, Virginia Woolf is too sophisticated for his third year students. Oh, and he is only apologizing because his publisher said his comments might affect his book negatively. He wouldn't have apologized otherwise. His reason for not speaking well is because he was paying more attention to a man (speaking in French that he is apparently fluent in) than to his young woman interviewer.

Bitter about missing the Yuletide noms

I know it's childish, but I'm seriously miserable over missing the nominations. For some reason I thought they would last longer, as in "till the early October", and I wasn't following the Yuletide comm, and now... well... can I just cry okay
Most of my fandoms are virtually non-existent (i.e. literally "one-person"), and there's so little hope they were nominated by someone else. I looked forward to nominating them so much.

Also, I suspect I might be getting carpal tunnel syndrome, and this makes me even more miserable./relevant

Leaving LJ Because it Sucks

A lot of people on my LJ flist have decided LJ sucks now, so they're leaving. It's totally their decision and I hope they're happy wherever they go next, but here's the thing - if they miss the way LJ was before, why things they wish were still being posted, or reply to other people's fandom related posts, stuff like that? LJ will only be how it was before if people start making it that way again.

Heyyy guys, it's a quiet Saturday, I have the apartment to myself, and I want to relax from the week.

Anybody have any good movie recommendations?

My favorite genres are the mystery/thriller, action type things, and really abstract thoughtful films (like, idk, Pi), so anything you can think of from there would be good.

But I'm totally open to trying new things!

I'm still getting people complaining about how the Doctor wasn't cast as a non-white woman, and I want to agree with them, but at the same time...

I can't think of a single good in-universe reason for that to happen. And I know that the Doctor doesn't consciously pick how he'll look in the next regeneration, but there's enough that I think he unconsciously does (falls in love with Rose as 9 -> becomes someone Rose could be with (aka more conventionally "handsome", more willing to stay with her, etc.)), and I just can't see any in-universe reason for him to choose that. I mean, if Matha had come back and he had gotten really close to her as 11, and really "got" her or whatever, and then regenerated as a non-white woman in her honor, I could see it, but...

Can anyone else think of a good, in-character/in-universe reason for the Doctor to have become a non-white woman? Because I'm just not seeing any.

Our border collie was accidentally his by a family friend going down our driveway this morning. He's up and hobbling around, eats. and drinks water, but we think one of his back legs is dislocated or something. We called local the vet hoping someone would be there, but they're closed like they are most weekends(they are very rarely opened on Saturday.) There is no where else around here to take him to! We don't even have emergency pet services around here. All we can do is keep him comfortable as possible and wait till freaking Monday. I'm so frustrated and upset right now.

Question about plagiarism

As every single prof likes to repeat before essay time begins, you have to cite words, phrases, and even ideas that you take from other places.

But what if, say, you come up with a great idea and it's already implemented into your essay. And then, during your research, you stumble upon the exact same idea in someone else's work, one that's pretty prominent. How on earth would that constitute plagiarism? To me it seems highly unfair that we'd have to credit someone else for our own original ideas, seeing as virtually nothing is truly original anyway. But for fear of getting smacked with accusations of plagiarism I'd still feel compelled to cite them.

How does this work, exactly? Is it still necessary to cite them? I'm absolutely terrified of being seen as a plagiarist.
