Wow, this is the dullest and most uninteresting set of secrets. Pity it's been like this for ages now, pretty much since the move to DW.

So I'm not really doing anything for New Year's and it sucks.

For the past few years, a friend of mine hosted New Years' and it was always fun. She's doing something else this year - which sure, I understand, but when I started looking round for other options it just seems that everyone of my friends has become a bore or is cocooning or whatever.

My friend whom I used to celebrate with in college is now cooped up with his partner & family. My best female friend says she'll just stay home with the dogs and go to be at 9 because she's so tired lately and I'm like WTF.

I mean, I'm not angry at any of them individually, but is this what growing older is like? It really sucks.

Today I redrew an old pic of mine , and instead of deliberately trying to draw in an anime-esque style I just drew in a style I liked with a few moderation. I didn't try to imitate any set style (other than using tips I got for eyes and noses). It came out much better, and I felt much better about it.

I think I'm going to stick with this style I'm drawing in...I love it and I feel good about my art.

SK wrote a book or story that included something called the asshole button or something like that. I don't remember it exactly, but I think he said everyone has a button that, if pressed, sends them into a rage. I'm wondering what the book was and what the name of the button was. The book would have been published before 1995 because the only things I read after that were The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon and Bag of Bones and I know it wasn't in those.

I'm also wondering, did he say anything about people who can find that button in others really easily? I can't remember if that was in the book or if it was from a conversation I had with someone when I read the book.

Like a slash pairing in theory, but not in practice?

I like slash and I ship these two guy characters, and squee over their gay-ish moments, but 90% of all the discussion and fanfic about them is done in a way I absolutely despise -- basically, minimizing or undermining all the things about them that's important to them as characters, made them interesting and important parts of the 'verse they inhabit, and made me actually like them as people in the first place.

So whenever I try to seek out material from my fellow slashers, I'm repeatedly finding myself trying to read stories about two incredibly boring, one-note, selfish guys whose love makes everyone around them miserable a la Brokeback Mountain, and have been stripped of everything that I actually like about them because it makes them slightly more gay (and it's not like they don't have plenty enough gay moments in canon). Or watching people writes pages of discussion and meta attempting to analyze them in a way that's geared so narrowly towards the goal of making every single second of their presence into evidence of their mutual gayness that these fans have constructed two incredibly one-note, unlikable, self-obsessed dudes who think about nothing except how their love for each other consumes every single aspect of their being and how they DGAF about anything else, which is SO far from what the characters are like in canon.

The only respite I have is that I've found a few really adorable, beautiful, hot, or vividly evocative pieces of fanart. Art is all moments and feelings, and so they manage to capture the adoration I have for the ship. Unfortunately, there isn't much fanart, and I'm not a big fanart person -- much more interested in fic. Arrrggghhh. It's no fun doing things all on your own. I wanna see some actual exchange of ideas, I have no desire to be in my own little bubble.

Secret 1 - Big Name Fans

Every fandom I've been in has one major Big Name Fan whose name pops up everywhere. I get so much second embarrassment for the other folks who shit themselves over them and praise at their feet and froth at the mouth whenever they put something new out. I once saw someone write a LiveJournal post about how they saw no point in writing fanfic because the Big Name Fan was always going to be better. I've had a few Big Name Fans as friends and they're just normal people. The people who act like puppies barking for their attention are just... ugh.

So you like this person's art or writing, that's great but can you stop licking their arse now? Please?

Yeah, that was my thought. That just because he didn't hear "black folk" complaining doesn't mean were happy with their lot in life. It just means they were smart enough to keep their opinions to themselves with people they weren't sure they could trust.
