Hi there, secret maker #4.

I like that picture.

Also, I don't think it's as simple as "not interested in female characters"="sexist" but I do think that people's taste in media can be more reflective of their biases than they like to think. I'm getting tired of the arguments always coming down to either "the media you like says absolutely nothing about you" or "the fact that you like/don't like x means you're x-ist!"

This is a very good comment; I agree wholeheartedly.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, but at the same time it's next to impossible to get a complete picture of that in fandom.

For example, I'm only really in anime/manga fandoms, but there are a lot of common tropes in that medium that are only applied to women 99% of the time that I just cannot stand. As a result, I don't tend to appear very fond of them if you only view my fannish activity, despite the fact I tend to dislike male characters with those tropes just as much. So I'd probably seem to have pretty problematic views.

At the same time, if you took feelings outside of fandom into account [mainly because most of the fandoms I'd love to be in just flat out don't exist]? It's a much more even split, and I doubt I'm the only one.

tl;dr: I agree with you, it's just very very hard to see those trends accurately without knowing the person well.

no anon you're getting it the wrong way around

starting a thread to gush over female characters is great and does not make you an sjw

shaming people and making people feel bad for liking male characters, as if society already doesn't shame women for liking things they like enough already. that is your problem

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-03-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
+1

No kidding. I have times where I want to gush over awesome ladies, and there are times where I want to gush over awesome guys. And lots of people I know are like that, too. OP needs to get over themselves, imho.

Your dichotomy is false though. People talking about their male crushes =/= not caring about or avoiding female characters.

I think there's a difference between really liking female characters and female-dominated media is different from being sick of hearing about male characters and male-dominated media.

I understand it because I sometimes feel the same way but I just know that the sex of characters doesn't, ultimately, make a difference between my liking something or not, personally. I like some female characters, I like some male characters. There are some characters I could gladly do without, despite disparity in numbers between sexes. Hope any of that made sense.

I'm as anti-SJW as anyone here, and I pretty much agree with you, OP. Hell, my least favorite SJW habit is talking a good game about better representation in media, then ignoring every single character in favor of two white boys. I don't mind diving for the slashbait, that's fine, if people want to do that and own that, I respect them. Likewise I'm cool with people who say they want more representation, and then actually support shows and movies that have it. My only beef is with the hypocrites in between.

i think a lot of you are not understanding this secret. the op didn't say anything about it not being ok to gush over guys. the secret straight up says that if people exclusively go for male-dominated media and actively avoid anything with a notable amount of women in it then the op thinks that is sexist. well, it is. if you avoid women in your media as a pattern then it's likely because they are women and that's really basic sexism.

And water is wet

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-04 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm completely not surprised that the majority of fans talk (for lack of better word) about male characters far, far more than female characters, for the simple fact that female characters tend to be tropes and male characters tend to actually be characters. Three cheers for sexism!

What I'm trying to say, OP, is that you've got the right idea, but the sexism is mostly on the other side of the creative work.

Let's play a game called "how many people are going to tell me to make my own fleshed-out female characters if I'm so unsatisfied with the ones I see" today.

I think people who make a habit of actively avoiding female characters should at least be more willing to examine why that is. A lot of those I meet seem too complacent about it just being a preference thing. Sometimes it really is, but you should think about it.

On one hand, I see what you're saying - and it can definitely be that way with some people. On the other hand? Someone might just not like a set of tropes that shows up far, far more often in media as being applied to one gender than the other. I know that's part of why I tend to be less interested in female characters* in anime/manga, but - outside of the tropes regularly applied in that medium - have a pretty even split gender-wise.

Problem is, for me, I only get involved in anime/manga fandoms because most books just don't have a fandom to get involved with.

And I know I'm not the only one like this.

*And yes, the times those tropes are applied to male characters? I tend to dislike the male characters equally.

I think you kinda have a point with your first line, though it would need more context. You lost me a little at your second though. I'm all for more awesome female characters in stories and for people appreciating them, but being bitter that people like to talk about their male crushes/favorites/ships is kinda dumb and not really gonna get anywhere. It's also not sexist to have male characters you like. And people talk about and appreciate women here all the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because disliking a male writer's ventriloquist dummy with tits is totally exactly the same as wanting to deny real women rights. You got it in one, secret writer.

And playing violent video games is exactly the same as wanting to commit real mass murder.

I think a LOT of it is how stereotypically written most women characters are, and sadly, that makes most of them VERY hard to stomach.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure trying to shame people into liking what you like almost never works. But since so many people seem to complain about the same thing, particularly when it comes to female characters, instead of trying to force or shame people who clearly aren't interested into discussing/ squeeing over what you like why not band with people who want the same thing. It hardly requires that many people to start a discussion.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
This secret is funny: On one hand, you make a sweeping generalisation about a certain group of people ("Everyone who does X is sexist") on the other hand you whine about a sweeping generalisation being made about you ("Everyone who says X is an SJW").

I suggest that you stop accusing people of shit if you don't want to be accused of shit yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This was either clumsily stated, or my view on this is a little bit different than yours OP. I'm going to assume the former.

I too feel like sometimes I don't want to crush on someone, but I want to feel like I relate to them, and because I'm female, I don't get a whole lot of chances to do that. It's something that I think is slowly changing with movies like Frozen or Gravity, but not fast enough. I wish there were more people who wanted to talk about how much they identify and read into the nuances of female characters too. It's just that others are going to like what they're going to like, and with male characters being the center of the fucking universe, you're not likely to get huge crowds talking about how awesome the female in support of them is.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of the problem is that the audience is looking at female characters as tropes. Seriously, look up thread at all the "female characters just aren't written as well as male" comments. People are convince that a female character is going to be uninteresting from the get go that they aren't given the same chance as a male character.

It reminded me of that spreadsheet going around a few years back for "strong female characters" where all different types of female characters were reduced by the creator to a single trope and deemed "not a strong female character".
