I completely agree with you, OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see why people don't like them (and saying people are bigoted or homophobic for not shipping them is 110% bullshit).

And I agree that they borrow too much from the older and far superior version.

However, I think that borrowing is one of the reasons the Kirk/Spock relationship is the only half-decent thing in the reboots.

I actually only like Spock when he's interacting with Kirk and, contrary to the OP, I think they make each other better people. Plus, Spock caring about Kirk is one of the only times I read genuine emotion from him.

Granted, I only consider this to be true for Star Trek Into Darkness. Not Star Trek 2009.

+1

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to say that the only time Spock shows emotion is with Kirk is a stretch especially if you consider that both big times are extremely OOC for him - trying to kill him and then cry for someone he doesn't care about that much when he wouldn't cry for his mom..yeah, I get the criticism
Personally, I find the subtle emotion he showed with Amanda, Uhura and even Sarek (or Pike when he died) no less important than crying and screaming not to mention more fitting with what I know about vulcans.

It has occasional moments where it's good. Like, when they actually devote screen time and story beats to building their relationship, those story beats and moments are usually decent enough. The problem is, yeah, as you say, all too often they don't bother to do that and just rely on the fact that we know they're supposed to be friends.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like the section following the mission to Nibiru. Kirk's excitement, him and Spock's disagreement was well-handled. And I liked the scene of Kirk looking back at Spock before deciding not to kill Harrison. THAT was one of the moments where I felt that they actively made each other better and the mutual respect made them more likable.

Still better than Spock/Uhura

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not really a fair comparison though. Because at least for the Kirk and Spock relationship, the reboot writers are copying good writers there so there's occasionally some quality material that appears.

Whereas since they wrote the Spock/Uhura romance from the ground up, it just doesn't work due to their incompetence.

Much like how Kirk became a captain. The original worked hard through the ranks and the new one ... he doesn't give a shit about the rules and his dad was a hero?

Yeah, I could never really get into reboot Kirk/Spock either. I think part of it is because a lot of the fic involves woobie!Kirk which is...no thank you. Their friendship just also wasn't very believable in the movies. I understand that characterization has to move more quickly in films than in tv shows, but it just felt so flat

This is what I hate about NuTrek

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that very little works without living cliffnotes from TOS - i.e., Other Spock. "Oh, yeah, Khan? He was one of our most dangerous enemies."

I'm not into K/S in the reboot, but Kirk/McCoy works in it (but not at all in TOS). So I guess I'm not a homophobe. Whew!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. If it wasn't for TOS, a lot of people wouldn't even consider it as a ship.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm all over Kirk/Spock in original flavor Trek, but I just can't see it working in NuTrek. They don't have that kind of dynamic. At all. Not even close. I ended up sliding towards Kirk/McCoy, which I would've never, ever considered a possibility.

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-11-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I pretty much agree with you completely. Like there are moments where I genuinely like the friendship and think it's got potential but for the most part it just feels like it relies far too heavily on everyone knowing that they were friends in ToS instead of trying to make it work in the new setting.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. With the new reboots, I can't even see them convincingly as friends. They're suddenly supposed to be best buds ever, just because future Spock says so? It makes no sense. Friendship doesn't work like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I got into Star Trek via the reboots and I got their connection before I'd watched TOS. Maybe it was just because the actors have such good chemistry or something, I dunno, but I definitely started shipping them before I got into original TOS and I definitely saw the potential for shipping them without really knowing much about original Trek.
I feel like Kirk/McCoy is the more popular reboot ship and it pretty much uses the same amount of telling vs showing that K/S does in the reboot movies.
I agree with the a few other peoples sentiment about it being better than Spock/Uhura though, I could see what they were going for but I dunno if it was their chemistry or just poorly written but I didn't feel it.

Agreed. And I love the old show and the new films.

But what disappointed me most was that, I distinctly remember the writers saying something about more development of the Kirk/Bones friendship in the second film....and we got zilch. I was looking forward to that.

Leave the epic bromance between Kirk/Spock in the old show. This is an alternate universe, develop Bones more and explore the difficulties of a human and an alien hybrid romance more, since we didn't get TOO much of that in the older series with Spock's parents (we got a bit in a few of the books, but seeing as they aren't canon and all....).

Nu trek rides on the coattails of it's predecessor. News at 11. The same goes for the shitty slash pairing, although now spirk has become entirely baseless and transparent.

Well, I don't even care about the third movie anymore.
They will still not give a damn about each other and not act as friends for 99,9% of the movie, only to remind us they are 'friends' in the end because they are called Kirk and Spock. Probably when Shatner will make his silly cameo because, clearly, old Spock messing up with free will and them copying THE scene wasn't enough to make their relationship hopelessly forced.

They remind me Dawson and Joey. All the pretentiousness and stuff about them being soulmates and how superior that relationship is and yet, it never delivers on screen with facts.

Same. I can see it and appreciate it in TOS but in the reboot it does nothing for me. I went in expecting to ship it and came away all about Kirk and Bones.

But then JJ said that the videogame is shit so idek
