Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Vs. creationism/intelligent design. How would you deal with a friend who doesn't? I'm usually a live and let live person, but it bugs me that people can sit in climate controlled surroundings playing a game on their iphone while their lives depend on medication and medical advances all possible through science, but oh yeah, evolution is totally bogus because rainbows are so pretty only a deity could do that.

Re: Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't believe in evolution. I understand it. You either understand evolution or you don't. There's no belief involved.

I wouldn't argue because that tends to make people even more stubborn.

Re: Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, you might not be able to get through to them. I'm a biologist (currently working on getting my PhD) and one of my relatives is an MD. And he doesn't believe in evolution. Even though he's Catholic and the Catholic Church officially supports evolution as being consistent with dogma.

Someone people are just stuck in their ways.

Re: Do you believe in evolution?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Leave it be. Even though you're right, trying to change someone's beliefs when they're not willing to listen will only result in hard feelings.

I don't know, try to explain it to them, unless they really just don't give a shit in which case just let it be.

The thing that bothers me about this post is that it seems like you care less about whether or not they have a correct understanding of the concept of evolution, and more about whether they display a properly reverential, awe-struck attitude towards Science. I dislike that attitude quite a bit.

Dude even the goddamn Pope says evolution is real. Your attempt at trying to start wank is kinda stale.

If I had a friend who didn't believe in evolution they'd still be my friend because somehow I befriended them in the first place and I care much less about their feelings re: our monocelled ancestors than I do whether or not they're bigots or whether they are interesting to talk to or all the other various aspects of friendships that exist outside your social media of choice.

I know people like this. NO idea how people can be college educated, 21st century dwellers and tech addicts and not grasp (or refuse to accept) basic concepts in biology, but... yeah. It happens. In everyday conversation, I like to work in offhand remarks reminding my relatives of things that debunk the theory of a 4000 year old earth, etc. and watch them squirm.

Is anyone else burnt out?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
So many good causes, so much social injustice, so much hate being thrown around between genders, between races.... I actually feel weary of humanity, sick to my soul of us all.

Good after Bad

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Often when a show/book series/movie series is ongoing and the quality/direction goes the wrong way, lots of people who used to love it say they wish it would end. But they keep watching in the hope that it might go back to what it was or might recapture that magic.

I'm wondering which media has managed to do this (even if only for a little while).

For me personally, I was about to quit CSI during Langston's era but I stuck it out and now I'm really enjoying Russell's era.

Does anyone have their own examples?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-11-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
What are you looking forward to in the remainder of 2014 and then on to 2015?

In regards to media, I am of course looking forward to the new Avengers movie. Might be my first midnight screening! I also can't wait to watch my first season of Game of Thrones live.

Personally, I am about to finish my first 52 week money saving challenge. I plan on doing another one next year and in 2016 using that money for a trip to New York! If I can save extra money up I want to renovate my bedroom some.

What are you all looking forward to?

My grandfather...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
...had a stroke this morning. My mother is flying up to visit him tonight. He doesn't recognise people, he's numb all down one side, and his speech is all slurred over the phone.

He's gotten very frail these last few years. It sounds pretty serious.

IDK. I haven't really felt much so far. I've mostly been comforting my mum. She's pretty upset.

F!S, assuming that you could have chosen, consciously, to be born or not while having all the knowledge about your life as it has been up till now...would you have chosen to be born, or not?

Apropos of trolling myself by reading a series of continentally-inflected blog posts (of the SPEPy variety), here is my current--curmudgeonly--impression of that philosophical ecosystem:

It has all the essentially terrible features of pragmatism--endless, content-free peans to the irreducible complexity of multi-faced singular experiences etc. etc., which never terminate in any interesting conclusions on first-order matters. But, unlike the pragmatists, they've so completely sociologically separated from the analytic mainstream that they no longer even feel the need to engage with people who believe in e.g. states of affairs, classical logic, share-able mental content, and so on. But the only good thing pragmatists ever did was engage with non-pragmatists! At least some of those critiques were interesting. By contrast, when it's just left alone by itself, anti-theory eats its own tail forever. When you're only talking to other deconstructionists, you deconstruct deconstruction, and argue about how theorizing the untheorizability of the particular illicitly attempts to occupy a universalizing space; we need a more thorough revolution of the revolution, and so on, forever.

There's a particular irony in the fact that they often bill themselves as sensitive to the particularities of, and motivated by the significance of, some radical notion of the struggle against the man--but I can think of few things more useless to the struggle than endless navel-gazing debates about who's the better anti-realist.

Encouragement that isn't.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
After almost a year of unemployment and trying desperately to figure out what I want to do with my life (and still having no damn clue), I've gone crawling back to retail for a seasonal job. I have spent my entire adult life trapped in retail and hating it so badly that it affects my health. I have never been even a little bit quiet about this fact (when I'm not where my coworkers can hear me, at least), or about the fact that having to go back to it is destroying whatever sense of self-worth I had left.

And yet every person who hears that I have a seasonal retail job immediately responds with "That's great! If you do a good enough job, maybe they'll hire you on permanently!"
