Depressing Stream #1

So, because Noodles enjoys fellating me, this week he has turned the shitstream movie list over to me! This week, the movies will not be shit! However, because I am a harsh benefactor I have decided that he shall play only movies showcasing the darkest ennui this world has to offer. You're welcome.

First up will be a movie recommended by blessezmoi, guaranteed to make you feel either sad or claustrophobic*, or both. Starring Ryan Reynolds, directed by Chris Cortez, and with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%, it's Buried.

Second on the docket is a fucked up psychological horror classic. Chock full of visuals that inspired the likes of Silent Hill and your second cousin's film school final project, it's Jacob's Ladder!



It'll leave you wondering if reality is real and where the limits of sanity lie.

And to end things off, we'll be turning to a lighter note with Stephen King's The Mist. Most accurately termed an action horror, this film is really a commentary about what happens when small town mentality is reduced to life in a metaphorical petri dish on the verge of what might be the apocalypse. It's a personal favorite, and is definitely not to be missed.

Don't despair though, intermissions will be happy baby animal videos and heavy drinking so we don't all wind up crying into our safety blankets by the end of the night. Plus, as always, there's a porn parody for the after party and this week we'll be showing Tosh.Hole! Gay porn without skipping the sex scenes! It's a Christmas miracle!

So join us, won't you, for the first (and possibly last) time I'll be allowed to inflict my painful, painful film taste on the stream.

What is everyone one doing this (Memorial Day) weekend?

I wanted to see Mad Max but that will have to wait another week. =( I think I'll be babysitting my nephew Saturday night, which will be fun. Hopefully I remember to watch the movie stream on Saturday as well!

Other than that, just grocery shopping and cleaning. It had been raining a lot lately so we have been stuck indoors.

I know there are a few people who garden on here, so how's it going now that planting season is underway for those of us in the northern hemisphere? I'm growing two new (to me) heirloom tomatoes this year, German Queen and Cherokee Purple. I've had mixed luck with tomatoes in the past but I love big beefsteak tomatoes so I'm being optimistic and hoping for amazing homegrown tomatoes this summer. You?

Easy and healthy vegetarian recipes?

Anyone got any good, nutritious and most of all easy, vegetarian recipes? I'm trying to cook more, and I'd really like to focus on getting all my vitamins. I don't necessarily mean "low calorie" recipes because I'm not on a diet, but just vitamin packed meals that are delicious, filling, and maybe not drenched in sugars and salts.

I recently tried the "banana pancake" recipe that's been going around on Facebook (smashed banana + egg + vanilla/cinnamon) and it inspired me to look for more very easy and fun recipes.

Me and Early and the Dying Girl

Last night, I had the opportunity to see a screening of "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" Obviously, with that title, it was going to be a sad movie so I was mentally prepared for it, but I was not prepared for how funny it was. The trailer does not do it justice. I spent probably the first hour laughing so much and the last bit trying to hold back tears.

I hadn't read the book, but now I'm definitely going to. It was shown at Sundance and it's definitely a movie for film lovers, I loved various shots used throughout the movie.

If you get the chance to see it, I'd recommend it.

I want to apologise to BMI anon for the way some of us have reacted to her posts. Well, I guess there are two BMI anons?

Anyway, it's unfair to mock you for being really interested in your weight. That level of self-examination is an unusual level of awareness, but it's not necessarily bad. You can be more scientific than the rest of us, and humanity can learn something (if you write it down and publish it, because that's how science works). Or you can do it just for yourself. So long as you're going for healthy, and willing to revise your own prejudices of what that means, instead of just "thin" or "pretty," I think it's probably OK.

I think trying to match this or that other person is a recipe for misery, though, because that other person's skeleton, or endocrine system, or something else, may be too different from yours for you to ever match them, or to do so without great, and unnecessary, aggravation and pain.

Also, they may be a cartoon, and unrealistic in the real world. I said Korra was a good "inspiration," and I think she's better than some models and dancers in the real world, but really, it's not necessarily easy to get all those elements together; big arms, small waist, bubble butt, etc.

Anyway, you do you, but be healthy.
