I chalk "WIPs trigger and depress me!" to the "everything's problemmatic" trend.

Nothing wrong with a good WIP, even an abandoned one. It's better to have half of something great than nothing, because the author decided not to post it unless it was complete.

I have a real life, too, and yet I still manage to follow through on the responsibilities I take on to my fandom. It's almost as if that's a shitty crutch of an excuse you made up because you have no attention span!

I think fandom is just one of those spaces where ou inherently get more people who have issues like anxiety - because it's one of those hobbies that can be done without really going out.

So, while I believe those feelings might be genuine (for a minority of people) - they're also not your responsibility, and you should just write and have fun. If people canb't handle WIPs, they can always just not read them.

I just don't read WIP, so I don't have problems with them. I can read WIP if the story isn't that good, but the better the story is the more I hate the story when it's a WIP. I've learned it's best to avoid for my peace of mind.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like reading WIPs.

So I only read stories that are marked "complete" on AO3.

Problem solved.

Some people in fandom are entitled fucks, no news there.

I read WIPs all the time, it doesn't deter me at all. Sure, it's sad to see them abandoned, but if I am sad about it, that means I was invested enough for it to be a good story and therefore worth it anyway. Plus then I can privately write my own endings to the story. No shame.

It's just people confusing "trigger" with "something I don't like" again.

I tend to side eye work in progresses, but I don't freak the hell out about them. I just wait until they're done before starting them, while reading other stories to tide me over in the meantime. If they're never going to get done, well, there's plenty of other stories in the sea.

The only thing I do hate is sudden WIP abandonment. It would be nice if the Author told us whether or not the story was going to get done or not.

I feel you. Some of the kindest reviews I've gotten on my (extremely slowly updating) WIP said that even if I never complete it, they're glad they got to read what I DID post.
Also, since WIPs are marked, they're easily avoidable for the people who don't want to invest... but I feel you. I probably wouldn't complete a 300k story if I had to write the whole thing on my drive before posting it.
I'm getting better about writing on my own these days, but starting out? No way.

I actually kinda like reading WIPs? I tag them to alert whenever something new is posted, so when I get that email it's like AW YEAH and pretty much makes my day.

Not that I don't have a huge list of completed works bookmarked, but those are like...a good book series that I've read (and probably re-read) but it makes me sad because there's no more.

Agreed. If WIPs give you actual anxiety, you are a spoiled, sheltered, entitled child who has no clue how actual mental disorders work. Why share anything at all with these crybabies?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, people who say it give them anxiety are melodramatic speshul snowflakes.

Though I understand where OP is coming from, I will probably not read a WIP or incomplete fic. I usually just wait until it's finished.

No offense but I don't give a shit about your ideas if you have no intention to finish it.

This is not really relevant to the OP topic, but somewhat related. I never understood why fic writers get so butthurt when somebody cares if an abandoned fic will be continued. Like, I get not wanting to feel like you owe readers anything but some authors are downright pissed that one of their fics are more successful and anticipated than other stuff they write.

The other day someone, with no ill-intent, asked an author if they had any plans on finishing a certain fic and they freaked out that people cared about that fic and deleted it on the spot. Why are so many writers so fucking sensitive and butthurt that people actually liked their stuff?

Seriously, this tumblr generation that gets triggered by every damn thing needs to be sent to their own little island where nothing can hurt their delicate feelings.

I mean people get upset about anything they get extremely emotionally invested it. It is a common human trait, although what those things are vary.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
actually, what bothers me more is the very obvious incomplete stuff marked as complete.

if I get to the end of a chapter and it is a fucking cliffhanger, it is NOT a complete story.

THIS is why I don't troll for fic anymore. I can't even trust the 'complete' and 'incomplete' markers. I don't care if it is in progress, just if it is in progress, don't mark it COMPLETE

The one time I get annoyed by a fic writer abandoning their WIPs is when they abandon the vast majority of their fics. True, they still don't have a responsibility to finish anything. It just makes them seem like a flake and kind of...IDK, a fic tease? Like, "I'm just going to dangle this fic in front of my readers and make it sound awesome and get people into it and enjoy the validation of that, but they won't get any satisfaction out of it because I'll abandon it halfway through. And I will do this not once or a few times, but pretty much exclusively, over and over and over again."

yeah, the disappointment seems especially weird for fanfic.

compared to original work it just seems a more in-the-moment enjoyment. most fanfics aren't even written to be enjoyed for their climax and ending. there might be built-up to something, but it's not too difficult to guess what will happen in most cases.

and there's always canon to really wrap things up.

I personally have no problem reading WIPs, if only because most of my fandoms aren't huge and so there isn't exactly a glut of good, completed fics. Would definitely rather read a really good story that might never be finished than a mediocre one that has a definite ending, especially if I'm searching for works featuring one specific character or pairing: I'll take what I can get.

And just for an anecdote about fics that seem obviously "abandoned": it honestly took me like 5.5 years altogether to finish a fic that ended up being a little over 50K words, so not even all that long, because of my personal life taking priority, and sometimes it would go years between updates. But I did eventually get to the end and posted the conclusion I'd had in mind from the beginning. So, you know, miracles happen, you don't always have to "give up" on works you've been following, etc.

I suspect most people who erupt into hysterics about how WIPs give them anxiety and depression are taking fandom way too goddamn seriously. (And I say this as someone who lives and breathes for fanfic.) And if you are actually subject to that kind of anxiety and depression issues, well, you have my sympathy, but you also have the option - hell, arguably the responsibility - of not reading clearly marked WIPs.

Having said all of that? If you don't really give a shit about telling (all of) your story, I don't see why I should give a shit about reading it. You do you, and write whatever you what. If you want to churn out endless WIPs, you should absolutely go for it. It's your life, your time, your story. And no fic writer owes anyone a completed epic. There's plenty of readers out there who will enjoy what you do write, and that's awesome. But I will choose not to be one of them, because I prefer to read complete stories. Drama avoided on both sides, no fuss.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
When I write fics, I don't post them until they're done. Even the long ones. That's my personal preference.

When I read fics, I prefer to read finished ones, but if I start one that isn't finished and enjoy it, well, at least I got a few chapters of enjoyment!
