My mother's mac and cheese. So amazingly delicious. I still haven't figured out the trick for making it, but it is better than any other mac and cheese recipe I've ever had.

Also my mother's chicken noodle soup. Lentil soup. Potato soup.

Family pet peeves

I love my SIL. She's a vegan, but not militant about it or anything and I have absolutely no problem accommodating her diet at family gatherings. I'm a reasonably good cook, so she isn't stuck with the usual Morningstar patty in a microwave with pasta primavera or whatever. I try to make sure she's got at least one entree she can eat, I keep the side dishes vegan, and also have at least one vegan dessert option. All of it is homemade. This week someone tagged her with a vegan cake recipe on Facebook and one of her comments was "Cakes are better without eggs and dairy, anyway! ;)"

No. As someone who's baked and eaten both, no, they are not. What's more, making a decent cake without eggs or dairy and not ending up with something dense and unpalatable is often trickier than baking a cake WITH eggs and dairy. I've eaten pretty good vegan cakes, but none that were superior to one with eggs/dairy. Margarine =/= butter.


I didn't say anything. I don't even know why this bothers me so much, but it does.

What do I do if my story is pretty clearly from one main character's POV, but there's a scene I'd like to include where he's not around. Do I still include it-- it's two people talking about him-- or do I work around without it, or include it and try and do more of an omniscient POV overall?

Basically, MC's brother drops a hint to MC's friend that MC isn't as straight as the friend thinks, which leads to the two getting together. And while the boyfriend might eventually tell MC this, it's less interesting secondhand; because the timing/context the brother said this in is very significant. Boyfriend could not articulate all that.

Advice?

One of the major contributors of art to my slice of fandom has gone patreon-only. She's no longer drawing anything for the fandom in general; you have to pay for it. All of it.

My feelings on this are weird because I have a bit of an acquaintance with her and she's sweet, in the sense that she genuinely cares about the people she has relationships with and supports other creators. But at the same time I'm like...girl you're a sell-out. And, I mean, I chat with her, and I like her art, but I'm not willing to become a patron, because from my perspective, she's charging way too much, and I don't want to spend nearly $20/month for fanart. I'm a fucking adult and I have priorities.

The people who are becoming patrons are young. They're throwing money at this thing while complaining about being broke.

So, it's like, she's contributing to a problem.

Also, this is a fandom that's on the decline, because the content came out years ago. I think, by going pay-to-view, she may also be contributing to its death.

I dunno.

A true story

The tumblr activist’s many chins wobbled furiously as her meaty fingers pounded the keyboard with all their meagre, Dorito-fueled strength. Behind her, the smell of dirty laundry drifted fermented, mingling with her own bodily door. She had put off all of the day's chores and personal hygiene rituals so that after she got home from a long day being totally incompetent at her job as a Wal-Mart greeter, her easily-fatigued 500 lb. body would have enough energy to type up a ten-page screed about the lack of demiplatonic sapiosexual representation in Doctor Who just in time for the new episode to air.

Once she had finished this momentous task, there was still much to do before the night was done - she had to queue up her tumblr’s content for this week, which mostly consisted of pictures of conventionally attractive white men, posts detailing her trans headcanons, reblogs of cutesy art depicting mermaids in hijabs, and reblogs of even cutesier fanart wherein all her favourite video game characters were reinterpreted as slightly chubby ambiguously brown women with interchangeable faces, red noses, and pink undercuts. Of course, interspersed between every five images of one of the actors from Supernatural or Teen Wolf, there would be occasional token gif-sets of Lupita Nyong'o, Beyonce, or Garnet from Steven Universe with captions proclaiming them to be "queens", "goddesses", and "flawless" - just so everyone would know for certain that this tumblr activist was not remotely racist, and proudly supported women of colour.

Performing such actions drained her energy greatly, sometimes to the point of triggering her, but she could not afford to disappoint her SuperWhoBeyonceLock blog's 1283 followers. After all that queueing, hopefully she would have just enough time left for a quick makeout session with her life-sized cardboard cutout of Benedict Cumberbatch before retiring to her king-sized bed to dream of all the ABO coffee shop AU fanfics she hoped would update next morning.
