I wish more countries would ban bully breeds like the UK is moving to. My ex step mother was mauled to death by pitbulls that were sweet babies before they killed her. And my dog was once attacked by a pair of off leash pitbulls while I was walking him leashed.

It isn't the dog, it is the owner. I guarantee that if we ban these breeds, then within six months there will be a spate of dog attacks from some new breed that the same assholes have given aggression training (or no training) to look macho instead. I've seen this happen with Rottweilers, then with Dobermans, and German Shepherds, and then moving onto them Central Asian Shepherds/Mastiffs, and various Bull Terriers, and Huskies, before washing up with these XL Bullies. It isn't the dogs, it is the bad owners that is the problem. We're just going to move it onto another breed, because we will not or cannot, tackle the problem owners.

I wish leash laws had harsher penalties regardless of breed. I (and my dog!) have been attacked on multiple occasions by dogs who running around off the leash, whose owners swore up and down they'd never done that, wasn't like them, etc. etc. People, they're animals. You love them and that's why you think you know them, but you really, really don't know how they're going to react in unusual situations, especially ones where you're not around. STOP DELUDING YOURSELVES. In each and every case, I had my dog on a leash, and we were walking in a public area minding our own goddamn business when someone's beloved family pet ran up to us and attacked.

SO many people are all, "mY pEt iS sO wElL bEhAvEd hE dOeSn'T nEeD a lEaSh". Yes, he does. Because it's the fucking law. The law isn't based on how much of a sweetie fluffkins your dog is, it's based on the fact that in public areas that aren't designated as off the leash areas, your dog needs to be on a leash, period. You do that to protect other dogs, people AND your own dog from getting mauled if they run up to the wrong dog. If you want to let your dog off the leash, do it at home in a fenced yard or take them to a dog park. Assholes.

And for people who think their dog has good enough recall that it's okay for them to be off the leash in a public area - fuck you. It's still the law, and most of you don't have the slightest clue what good recall is. Unless you've tested your dog repeatedly while it's distracted, and it still obeys you 100%, then no, you have no clue how good the dog's recall is and you're risking your dog's life by making that assumption.

I see we are having "guns do not kill people" situation in this thread.
"This breed is very aggressive and often abused I think we should stop breeding it and let it dissappear"
"Nooooo think of the children, I mean, poor doggies".

Frankly I do think we should ban all breeding and we need stricter dog regulations. But you all sound absolutely deranged here with poor dogs rethoric

A bit confused why this is sooooo controversial, based on the comments? I mean, assuming you are advocating for a ban on breeding dogs for aggressive traits rather than mass killing of pitbulls.

I also agree that owners are the biggest problem - and suggest that a licensing system should be used for agressive breeds until the population is controlled.

I also think that breeding dogs for traits that cause them harm (eg pugs with hips too narrow to give birth and snouts too short to breathe comfortably) should be banned.

Lots of people saying it's just the owner. No. It's not just tge owner. Some breeds are more susceptible to this behaviour because they were bred for it by irresponsible dog breeders. The result is dog breeds that are a russian roulette of aggression.

So glad I avoided the collective, national self-pity wallow of 9/11. It gets worse (and more ham-fisted and more jingoistic) every year, it seems. Of course it sucks that people died, but c'mon. 21 fucking years.

Almost as many people died in Morocco last week, and it's already out of the news cycle and forgotten.

So, I have a blended team at work. Meaning we have my two person section, a three person section, another three person section, and a four person section. We all work on different but related things, so we're all technically one team. The four person team is in India. They're not outsourced, they're not helping "us", they are full on team members; we have meetings between all of us every day to go over the work.

I had a team member in the morning meeting ask on 9/11 this year if we should have a moment of silence to commemorate the day. Immediately my brain went to - a full on third of us are not American. So I said, "No, thank you."

Y'all, I got called on the carpet by the boss because someone else (I have my suspicions) was sooooo offended by me saying "no, thank you" (??) that she was driven to tears because she's from a military family (??????, bitch so am I, wtf does that have to do with anything??).

None of these people give a damn when we lose more lives, more infrastructure, more rights than what happened that day. Because it wasn't brown people that did it to us.

I will never not be affected by it. I remember the smell and how it lingered for months. It was the first time I saw my mother cry because my sister was living in Queens during that time and no one knew where she was or if she survived.

Sometimes I can still smell it.

Yeah this year I got sick and called in on 9/11 but I see it more as a day where I just spend a few moments reflecting how my life has gone since the events and kind of leave it there.
If someone happens to bring it up it's usually an exchange of how we heard about it initially and then an acknowledgement of how sad it was before going on with our day.

Anything outside of that I don't want to interact with it.

I'm in Canada and, honestly, when I'm reminded of 9/11 I always just wind up remembering how eerie it felt to be in high school and to have no one know what was going on, just that something real bad had happened, and classes being a suggestion that day because they had the news playing in the library.

It was a terrible tragedy, of course, and while I don't understand America's wallowing in it, I do always wind up remembering just how eerie and weirdly disconnected that day was.

That date has special meaning in my family for decades before 9/11. It’s only in the last 4-5 years we can go out to celebrate without someone saying we should be ashamed for our happy behavior in a restaurant.

I feel this. It was weird for me when I came back to the US for college. But I also understand it. I was in Boston during the marathon bombing. Much smaller scale. But it feels different when you live through things and are right there.

This is really trivial, but you know how some subreddits like AmItheAsshole tell stories that involve casts of people and instead of just... labeling them as DH, MIL, BIL, SIL, etc. the person seems to think that naming everyone is easier? It isn't, you moron. How are people supposed to keep it straight that Clyde is your husband, Marcus is your ex-husband, your oldest brother in law is Steve, the middle one is Darren and the youngest is Michael but likes to be called Mickey while Steve's wife is Debbie, Darren's boyfriend is David and Michael/Mickey just started dating a girl, let's call her Heather and your mother in law's name is Marie and HER sister's name is Margaret blah blah blah.

Just label them with the label that indicates their relationship to you.

I think dog owners have gotten weirdly more... problematic? over the past few years. I actually don't like using that word but I can't think of another one. I have read a lot more local news stories about unleashed dogs attacking children in the past two years than I ever remember before (no, not all of them were pitbulls). This even came up on the Ask A Manager blog where someone sent in a question asking about hosting gatherings when one of the potential guests had a dog phobia: https://www.askamanager.org/2023/09/coworker-wants-me-to-lock-up-my-dogs-so-he-can-come-to-parties-at-my-house-explaining-a-medical-accommodation-and-more.html

1) the OP explained more in the comment section that her dogs were well behaved and it was her asshole co worker that lashed out unreasonably at them; this is not the behavior I am talking about as she is doing a good job of making sure her pets are calm and happy around people.

2) the follow up comments from dog owners are.... strange. I was reading through them on Friday and there is a small comment chain where a woman is bragging about her chihuahua being untrained. She describes her pet as an "ankle biter" that regularly attacks other human beings (leading me to think that she likes injuring other people? I'm not sure...) and then she says she has no intention of training her animal not to jump, bark, bite, etc because she is childless and has a job.

There are many overwrought comments in this comment section like this and it reminds me of over the top rhetoric that I have seen on sites like Twitter and Facebook regarding dogs. I think a lot of dog owners for some reason have decided they don't want to leash their pets and like in that comment section from AAM, they are reveling in the fact that their animals regularly attack human beings and even other dogs. They like seeing their dogs barking, chasing, humping, or attacking people and/or other animals.

I know that there are responsible dog owners out there, I have cousins and siblings that take good care of their pets and their dogs are healthy, friendly, and downright polite. What I don't get is why there has been a recent uptick in smug dog owners loudly yelling about they don't want to train their animals and they want them to act out.

I think animal breeding of purebreds should be banned. Too many health problems, too many bad breeders slip through the cracks, just generally bad for the animals.

People on the left who froth at the mouth over pedophiles and think they should be locked up or killed care as little about protecting children as people on the right who accuse drag queens and trans people of being groomers.

Pedophiles need therapy without judgment. It's also essential to start seriously differentiating between "pedophile" and "child molester." If you don't believe that, you aren't doing anything about kids' safety.

I think surrogacy is bad for society. im not saying it's individually bad, or that people don't love being pregnant, or that it isn't an amazing gift that enriches people's lives on an individual or specific level. im saying that as part of the whole pregnancy industry it contributes to devaluation of children as individuals and not possessions, as a commercial enterprise it completely underestimates the risk to people who can get pregnant, and at large scale would require a secondary class of people in order to function, which is unacceptable.

that said, i do think the third thing about most labor which requires dangerous or risky physical action.

ooh i thought of a real spicy take:

the transition from gender as primarily (extremely flawed and quite shitty) social communication/relation to individual identity means that calling it gender serves zero purpose.

Related to the above, sorta (DA): I really hate internet trans discourse and don't get involved in it at all because I hate sexism and I feel like a lot of "internet trans" people's (teens' rather) ideas of what "gender" is / should be are just rooted in sexism.

Essentially I get that the point is to make "gender" lose all meaning. In practice I keep seeing these kids associate seemingly random things with "girly" or "manly" and because we all (well, not All but you get it) have a biological sex those ideas will still get attached to people based on their bio sex regardless of how they feel about it. If they live in a trans* inclusive place - good for them! If not, fuck them?

Most people who don't get it would rather attack me than try to get where I come from, lol.

I am finding people who were diagnosed with autism later in life are dominating autism discourse in a way that laying the foundation for new stereotypes. This is making people who are independent but diagnosed as being on the spectrum early in life have to fight a lot harder to be recognized as being valid in any capacity.
