"But no one is out. It's not so bad here, but in Hollywood? Jesus Christ. Why don't they just admit it? No one cares if they're gay or not. I certainly don't."

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)It is an issue that Sherlock Holmes's fans are as wary of plunging into as their hero was the Reichenbach Falls. Martin Freeman has, however, described the BBC series Sherlock as having "the gayest story in the history of television".
At the Baftas, where he picked up the best supporting actor award for playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes, Freeman said that he saw Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters as being profoundly in love.
"It's about the relationship between the two men and how it develops and how it changes," Freeman tells me. "It is about the things that wind each other up and the things that they genuinely love about one another as well. We all certainly saw it as a love story. These two people do love and kind of need each other in a slightly dysfunctional way, but it is a relationship that works. They get results."

He was outspoken and firm in his views and I can see where some might find that offensive but don't blame him for a clearly bungled article. If following his advice isn't for you, then it seems you already are.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)Okay, I see this idea pretty often, but I don't understand it. Why couldn't someone not affected by a problem try to help anyway? I get it's more touchy, since as they aren't in the same situation as the people they try to help, they can't really know what it's like, but... well, the problem concern them too, why do they have to shut up and act as if they didn't care?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)he was saying the n-word to describe the songs that use it. he wasn't spouting racist rhetoric and calling black folks the n-word. people need to stop being so sensitive and this is coming from a black female.
as for the other "quotes"..are we really going to be shocked by a straight white male demonstrating straight white male privilege? get over it.

Also, I don't know what kind of flack I'm going to get for this, but I feel I have a higher tolerance for statements like this, and things that Steven Moffat says, than other people. Like, as a queer woman and strong feminist, am I happy about the things Moffat says sometimes, or how he writes things? No, and I do get angry sometimes, but I still don't hate him or anything. I sincerely believe he is a good person, with bad views and shitty ideas, but still I can accept him because I admire his work and such. Same with Martin.
I see a lot of hateful things sometimes, things that make me feel totally insignificant, despised, from people who hate me just because of who I am and who I love, and that makes me livid, it makes me want to fight down everything and change society completely, or sometimes when it gets bad enough just leave and start my own little island community or something. And, I'm DEFINITELY not speaking for everyone especially those without the other privileges I have (able-bodied, white, etc), but I just can't find it in myself to rage against things said in ignorance and privilege but without malicious intent. I know this probably means I'll been seen as not truly involved in the causes or such, but it is just what I feel.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 08:30 am (UTC)(link)To me, it seems that whenever someone who isn't directly involved in an issue makes a statement about it they get jumped on for doing it wrong. Some people seem to want to take things the wrong way and not give the original commentor the benefit of the doubt.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)you know.....
I know that doesn't stop some one from being ignorant but come on! I get really frustrated when people who say good things but maybe "don't word it right" get destroyed when we should be focusing on taking down actually terrible people like rick santorum or fox news.
Fair enough to critique something, who gives a shit. But pretending that someone who has a different, but positive-intended purpose is a nazi sadist asshole is completely counter-intuitive.
fucking tired of it, it's not productive and beyond a certain point it is actually destructive. Sick of it.
