"Talking of which... 'The funny thing about the acting business is that there are more poofs in it than you can have hot dinners thrown at you,'" he says.

"But no one is out. It's not so bad here, but in Hollywood? Jesus Christ. Why don't they just admit it? No one cares if they're gay or not. I certainly don't."

They're probably referring to a certain fake quote going around Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
He hasn't outright said it, but there is this:

It is an issue that Sherlock Holmes's fans are as wary of plunging into as their hero was the Reichenbach Falls. Martin Freeman has, however, described the BBC series Sherlock as having "the gayest story in the history of television".
At the Baftas, where he picked up the best supporting actor award for playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes, Freeman said that he saw Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters as being profoundly in love.
"It's about the relationship between the two men and how it develops and how it changes," Freeman tells me. "It is about the things that wind each other up and the things that they genuinely love about one another as well. We all certainly saw it as a love story. These two people do love and kind of need each other in a slightly dysfunctional way, but it is a relationship that works. They get results."

OP

Not sure if anyone will see this, but I just wanted to point out I was trying to make my point less wordy on number 1, but now realize the "he's against assimilation" bit doesn't really make sense. Hope that doesn't cause a load of wank..

I still don't know where the homophobic rasist idea was born from. And I hear about it the first time now. wtf oO

[identity profile] jak-frostty.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Despite the entire article being handled extraordinarily poorly (the quotes were organized in an absurd dada fashion, no clear narrative, nearly each paragraph only a sentence long..) I'm not getting a racist or homophobic vibe at all. If you read the entire article, Martin is clearly advocating for living a life without hiding who you are and what you care about no matter who you are. I'm not surprised that he used race or homophobia as examples (as they are quite the hot topics at the moment) but don't overlook the fact that he also used music and clothing styles and 'the cult of celebrity' in his argument.

He was outspoken and firm in his views and I can see where some might find that offensive but don't blame him for a clearly bungled article. If following his advice isn't for you, then it seems you already are.

"I understand that as a white, privileged man, he's not in a position to comment on some of these topics..."

Okay, I see this idea pretty often, but I don't understand it. Why couldn't someone not affected by a problem try to help anyway? I get it's more touchy, since as they aren't in the same situation as the people they try to help, they can't really know what it's like, but... well, the problem concern them too, why do they have to shut up and act as if they didn't care?

ita. it's brought up in every sherlock post and it's so not a big deal and everyone freaks out and says they no longer like martin freeman.

he was saying the n-word to describe the songs that use it. he wasn't spouting racist rhetoric and calling black folks the n-word. people need to stop being so sensitive and this is coming from a black female.

as for the other "quotes"..are we really going to be shocked by a straight white male demonstrating straight white male privilege? get over it.

He also had a really uncomfortable moment watching a bit of a Japanese program where a very strangely-dressed flamboyant man offered healthy snacks to children.

His reaction was, "In what way is that okay?"

Judging by that sort of moment, he's never been to Pride, a place many parents bring their children...

kudos on this, anon. it's really been bugging me how fast people are to take stuff from a poorly written article and use it to label him the worst things possible.

[identity profile] justspaz.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, this explains things well. He's obviously a really opinionated guy but one who isn't the best at articulating things. Like, I could not have articulated my responses as coherently as you, so again, thanks!

Also, I don't know what kind of flack I'm going to get for this, but I feel I have a higher tolerance for statements like this, and things that Steven Moffat says, than other people. Like, as a queer woman and strong feminist, am I happy about the things Moffat says sometimes, or how he writes things? No, and I do get angry sometimes, but I still don't hate him or anything. I sincerely believe he is a good person, with bad views and shitty ideas, but still I can accept him because I admire his work and such. Same with Martin.

I see a lot of hateful things sometimes, things that make me feel totally insignificant, despised, from people who hate me just because of who I am and who I love, and that makes me livid, it makes me want to fight down everything and change society completely, or sometimes when it gets bad enough just leave and start my own little island community or something. And, I'm DEFINITELY not speaking for everyone especially those without the other privileges I have (able-bodied, white, etc), but I just can't find it in myself to rage against things said in ignorance and privilege but without malicious intent. I know this probably means I'll been seen as not truly involved in the causes or such, but it is just what I feel.

Oh Lord, the Watson anti-stans were trotting that shit out all over Fandom March Madness the other day. It got really ugly and unpleasant, actually. (Because character = actor? Well, all righty then.) That article did seem disturbing, but seriously, are we really pretending the Daily Mail is that reliable? I just can't shake the idea that people who use that as their proof would say "but that's just a stupid tabloid!" if they printed something similar about someone they liked, y'know? He just seems to be really blunt, but I don't get a hateful vibe from him. IDK, man. But either way, the fighting's gotten very annoying.

Can I just say, I'm pretty damn impressed how level-headed this thread is. Not what I was expecting at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
People are getting upset about this article? It's not like he was encouraging racism/homophobia and it's not like he's pretending to be an authority on it- it was written in 2008 and, as far as I know, he hasn't really spoken too much about this stuff since. It was an unrehearsed interview, do you really expect him to be eloquent?

To me, it seems that whenever someone who isn't directly involved in an issue makes a statement about it they get jumped on for doing it wrong. Some people seem to want to take things the wrong way and not give the original commentor the benefit of the doubt.

[identity profile] 100101011.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think his comments are, as others have said, dumb or ignorant, really. they're just really insensitive.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a lot to contribute as I haven't been in the loop about this, but people know that he's like obsessed with motown right

you know.....

I know that doesn't stop some one from being ignorant but come on! I get really frustrated when people who say good things but maybe "don't word it right" get destroyed when we should be focusing on taking down actually terrible people like rick santorum or fox news.

Fair enough to critique something, who gives a shit. But pretending that someone who has a different, but positive-intended purpose is a nazi sadist asshole is completely counter-intuitive.

fucking tired of it, it's not productive and beyond a certain point it is actually destructive. Sick of it.
