I have an obsession with this topic that has not abated, so here's my question; what are your favourite books/movies/shows with found/chosen families?

I love love love Leverage for that reason, and I also really liked SG1 and SGA (although that was more in concept than in execution at times...the fic carries it out though!). Mag 7 also has it, to some extent at least, as does the ATeam.

For books, I love the relationship between Jack and Draycos in the YA 'Dragonback' series. (He's a young orphan with a dubiously legal lifestyle! He's an alien warrior-poet who spends half his time as a 2D sentient tattoo when he's not mentoring the orphan! They fight crime!)

So I got an iTunes card for Christmas and went through some of my fave pop artists (yeah yeah I like a lot of Former Disney Channel Star music, say what you will XD) . I went through Hilary Duff's song and ...I found this gem

and as I listened to the lyrics I realized...hey this is a pretty awesome song about Entitled Nice Guys that explains why the attitude is so bothersome and so many people don't like it. It shows exactly what it is and why it's shitty.

This game had been getting a lot of critical praise, so I've been wanting to check it out for while but I wasn't willing to drop $20 on a game I wasn't sure I'd like. The feeling of elation I got after finding it on Steam for under seven dollars was followed a couple of hours later by crushing disappointment (and by that I mean I literally finished the game in under two dollars. I'm extremely glad I didn't pay full price). It was just so...mediocre. Like, I'm glad that a game whose story is about a teenage lesbian couple is doing well but the characters were just not engaging at all. I think maybe the story might have been a bit more fresh ten or fifteen years ago but now it just feels dull. I also think that if I was younger and I was still the teenager who struggled with accepting her sexuality, then I might have been a lot more supportive of Sam and Lonnie and I probably would have rooted for their relationship. But looking at it objectively, I feel like Sam is a douche for stealing everything of value that her family had so she could pawn it to support her and Lonnie after they ran away. I get that her parents are in the wrong for not acknowledging her sexuality but stealing a whole bunch of shit from them isn't going to go a long way towards repairing her relationship with them. And then there's the fact that Sam gave up her scholarship to a good program to run away with Lonnie, who I believe is technically considered AWOL from the army (or at least in trouble since she signed up to join and never showed up for basic training). Am I supposed to consider that romantic or something? It just made me cringe.

Has anyone else played this game?

The Unholiday Thread

For those whose holidays were over ages ago and are just enjoying empty streets and easy parking: Happy Holidays, you suckers. ;) :P

For those whose families are awesome: rock on and enjoy what's left of your holidays. :D

However, this thread isn't about you guys. I love you guys and all, but just about every online space I see, you guys are getting the bulk of the holiday action. And that's fine. There are obviously lots of holiday greetings and such going around this time of year.

But there are not nearly enough support wishes for those whose families suck but still have to spend the holidays with them. I've seen a handful, and most of those (that I've seen) get drowned out by people getting pissed off at "wet blankets". There's like one graphic/meme being passed around to support people facing miserable holidays at the hands of friends and family they are supposed to find love and respect in, without being derided or minimalized. And maybe I'm just a cynic, but that doesn't seem to be nearly enough.

So for those of us you who are stuck with toxic families or environments for the holidays:

Hold on. It's nearly over.

And for those who have already been able to leave them behind now that Christmas is over, or for the previous addressees to read once they are away:

Congratulations - you made it. You probably won't hear this enough, so I hope something can be gained from hearing it from at least one person here. You made it, and at least that is something worth celebrating.

So Happy Holidays, and Happy End of the Holidays, because everyone could use at least a little of both.
