What common storylines/tropes in TV/comics/etc. do you hate?

Stuff friends do that annoys you...

... but not (yet) enough to make a big scene about it. There are a lot of small things that can grate on our nerves, but when good friends do it, we grit our teeth and ignore it up to a certain point - be it because bringing it up might not be worth the drama or because you are aware of your own faults that your friends also put up with without saying anything.

But it's still annoying. So rant here (also: When does a harmless but annoying thing become too much to just silently endure?)

... to talk to pets?

Occasionally there will be a scene where a character talks to another character's pet and they'll have some "Oh god, I must've gone off the deep end" moment. But I don't think it's weird at all (unless you're honestly expecting an answer) to talk to pets. It's proven that talking to plants makes them grow better, so why shouldn't you talk to animals?

Piggyback off this thread to ask about other things people might think are weird or not, if you like.

I'm afraid 11 days just isn't enough time for me to brainstorm and write a fic that'll be any good. I don't want to give my recipient something half-ass. Last year I had a lot of time to work on my gift fic but this year I'm too stressed and short on time. I like writing fic for my recipient, though, since that's pretty much the only thing I can do in the exchange. Hmmm. To sign-up or not to sign-up. I'm sorely tempted to throw my hat in and just try my best because it was fun last year. Anyone else on the fence this year?

Dreadlocks and non POC people.

I got into an argument about that with someone Tumblr.

I haven't done extensive reading, but I'm pretty sure that the dreadlocks here in the states came from the whole Rastafarian thing that was appealing to many people through the 70s and 80s. Plus, I just don't see how HAIR is a bad thing to do with what you want.

And yes, dreadlocks can damage your hair, depending on your hair make up, but...it's still a question of, why do YOU care? It's not your hair. If I wanna shave off sections of my own or do up dreadlocks or bleach it, that's my problem and not anyone else's.

Now, were we in a country like Greece, or where certain Buddhist or Hindu practices are done, then yes, dreadlocks would be considered rude and disrespectful, but we aren't (the greece thing might not really apply today, but the greeks had a history of dreadlocks, so...idk there).

To me, this isn't like a Native American war bonnet. It's just a case of self expression.

But I wanna know what everyone thinks about it, cause tumblr has this really fucked up view on cultural appropriation and I don't think hair falls under it like certain religious and ceremonial pieces do.

(don't get me started on people who say eating sushi is cultural appropriation, cause i wanna smack those people badly)
