(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)The problem is with all the people going "it's not PORN, it's a ROMANCE"
It's porn. If everyone admitted that, made the point that guys have unrealistic fantasy porn, why can't girls, and happily fapped off, things wouldn't be so messed up

Mind, I've not read it, and I don't care one whit to, but it's just porn.
You notice how Twilight didn't lead to the destruction of the teenage girl? Yeah, this isn't going to 'ruin' bdsm. Anyone who would have found Edward/Cristian Grey attractive already did. Christ, people who say it's "dangerous, because women totes can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy" sound like people who claim Harry Potter is going to lead to witchcraft and/or ruin actual (neo-)paganism.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:25 am (UTC)(link)Abusive relationships, sadly, do exist and are just a tad more common than members of the Scottish gentry. For those of us who have experienced them, be it directly or peripherally, and who have heard the entire gamut of reasons abusers use to justify their abuse, honestly it isn't a stretch to say that seeing their behaviors glamorized and normalized in the media is giving them validation.
Thank you for writing this
(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)It really, really bothers me how so many of the "protect women" critiques about FSOG are so damn patronizing or condescending.
I love reading ravishment porn and other fics of dubious nature. And yet, from the way some people are reacting, you'd think I'm some kind of rape apologist or victim blamer when that's the FARTHEST thing from my mind. I am perfectly capable of distinguishing rape from an erotic scene in a book. Thank. You. Very. Much.
If anything, FSOG has made me grateful that I don't bring up my kinks or preferences because apparently everyone would treat me like a lobotomized freak that needs to be protected and educated.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:31 am (UTC)(link)You're right, a huge percentage of romance novels fit into this pattern. This is exactly why I gave up on buying romance novels years ago (now I get all my romance reading from fanfics, and get scorn poured on me from all the genficcers for being such a shipper... yay). Because I hate that pattern to little bits - or at least I used to; it's become so boring, I can't really work up the energy to hate it properly any more.
I can spare some hate for 50 Shades though! (which btw I have not read and do not intend to. I heard waaaay more details than I ever needed to know about it, from my mother of all people D: just to double the horror) - because it's shoved this whole stereotype right into the limelight and glorified it and we now have to sit through so many mainstream media discussions of whether "this is what all women secretly want" blah blah... ugh. Given all the copycatting that goes on in writing/publishing, now there's probably even less chance of anyone wanting to break out into something 'new' in the genre of romance, and write something that breaks this mold.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)The only issue I had with the film involved the fact that they served Ana's tea with bag in pot - this is not right!!! ;)

If said sexy millionare is an abusive asshole, I'd pass, thanks
Don't know about you, but my boring embarrassing parents didn't say things like "I think he likes sex already" when my brother started kicking, but maybe my parents were weird.

And the person who passed that along was right. If it's 'chocolate', you need a wet wipe. Unless the other person is into that sort of thing...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)(No really did you last read a romance novel back in the 70s? Or do you not read outside of Harlequin novels? Really go to Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and get some recs for some good romance novels. Any book that uses chocolate starfish as sexy needs to some lessons from first time smut fic writers.)

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)What I find offensive is writing. It's laughably terrible, and an offense against the written word. It's bad for a fanfic, much less a best selling book. ("My inner goddess"? Really?) So yeah, I judge your taste if you like it, but not for the reasons you give.
