...I really don't get the kind of selective thinking that allows so many people to talk about how evil/harmful/awful/causing!abuse FSOG is, and then turn around and write all kinds of rape-gorn fanfic. Fiction is harmless! When they do it. But not when it becomes popular and everyone is talking about it, I guess.

Don't feel bad for liking it OP.

It's typical porn with the problems associated with typical porn.

The problem is with all the people going "it's not PORN, it's a ROMANCE"

It's porn. If everyone admitted that, made the point that guys have unrealistic fantasy porn, why can't girls, and happily fapped off, things wouldn't be so messed up

Hey fellow kinkster! I pretty much agree with you here. It's a ravishment fantasy with bdsm wrapping paper. Of course it's not a healthy romance, but that's probably the point. It's a romance novel. How many romance novels depict a healthy relationship?

Mind, I've not read it, and I don't care one whit to, but it's just porn.

You notice how Twilight didn't lead to the destruction of the teenage girl? Yeah, this isn't going to 'ruin' bdsm. Anyone who would have found Edward/Cristian Grey attractive already did. Christ, people who say it's "dangerous, because women totes can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy" sound like people who claim Harry Potter is going to lead to witchcraft and/or ruin actual (neo-)paganism.

A bit OT, but I think Scottish people have every right to gripe about their culture being reduced to the kilt-wearing Highlander sex god cliché in romance novels, not to mention the common Scottish laird/English lady trope, given the ugly, ugly history between Scotland and England.

I think the trouble with bringing things like time travelling Vikings in when you're arguing realism, or Scottish lairds when you're arguing fact-checking, is that one of those does not exist, and one of them is a tiny, tiny minority of people.

Abusive relationships, sadly, do exist and are just a tad more common than members of the Scottish gentry. For those of us who have experienced them, be it directly or peripherally, and who have heard the entire gamut of reasons abusers use to justify their abuse, honestly it isn't a stretch to say that seeing their behaviors glamorized and normalized in the media is giving them validation.

Thank you for writing this

I've never read Fifty Shades of Grey and have no interest in it. I find it poorly written and I think it's really misclassified as BDSM (not safe, sane, consensual in the slightest). Despite that though, it really, really bothers me how people criticize it. FSOG's target audience isn't preteen girls (the way Twilight's was). It's grown women -- you know, adults. Who can differentiate fact from fiction.

It really, really bothers me how so many of the "protect women" critiques about FSOG are so damn patronizing or condescending.

I love reading ravishment porn and other fics of dubious nature. And yet, from the way some people are reacting, you'd think I'm some kind of rape apologist or victim blamer when that's the FARTHEST thing from my mind. I am perfectly capable of distinguishing rape from an erotic scene in a book. Thank. You. Very. Much.

If anything, FSOG has made me grateful that I don't bring up my kinks or preferences because apparently everyone would treat me like a lobotomized freak that needs to be protected and educated.

"That's the whole POINT of a typical romance novel though, that the plucky heroine stands up to the dramatically damaged but still cool guy and he changes himself and his bad attitude with his love for her as a motivation and so on."

You're right, a huge percentage of romance novels fit into this pattern. This is exactly why I gave up on buying romance novels years ago (now I get all my romance reading from fanfics, and get scorn poured on me from all the genficcers for being such a shipper... yay). Because I hate that pattern to little bits - or at least I used to; it's become so boring, I can't really work up the energy to hate it properly any more.

I can spare some hate for 50 Shades though! (which btw I have not read and do not intend to. I heard waaaay more details than I ever needed to know about it, from my mother of all people D: just to double the horror) - because it's shoved this whole stereotype right into the limelight and glorified it and we now have to sit through so many mainstream media discussions of whether "this is what all women secretly want" blah blah... ugh. Given all the copycatting that goes on in writing/publishing, now there's probably even less chance of anyone wanting to break out into something 'new' in the genre of romance, and write something that breaks this mold.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you've articulated what I've been trying to say for a week and not managed to say and you did it so eloquently.

The only issue I had with the film involved the fact that they served Ana's tea with bag in pot - this is not right!!! ;)

Ignoreing all the abuse and rape, the sex scenes aren't even that good.
Like, they're so hilariously awful and vanilla.
Like how can anybody actually unironically like it.

But wherever different strokes different folks.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Have to disagree. BDSM theme of the book aside, it was just poorly written dreck. I couldn't even get through the first chapter and I have read some pretty dire fanfiction allll the way through, so that's saying something.

After having been told that someone (the heroine's?) anus is described as a "chocolate starfish" I really, really can't bring myself to read the book even out of curiosity.

And the person who passed that along was right. If it's 'chocolate', you need a wet wipe. Unless the other person is into that sort of thing...

.... yeah, no.

You need to read some better romance novels. The sex scenes are remotely sexly in Fifty Shades of boring and sorry the Edward stand in doesn't worship her near enough to be a standard romance novel.

(No really did you last read a romance novel back in the 70s? Or do you not read outside of Harlequin novels? Really go to Smart Bitches, Trashy Books and get some recs for some good romance novels. Any book that uses chocolate starfish as sexy needs to some lessons from first time smut fic writers.)

I don't really have any problem with the smut. I am a firm believer that fantasy doesn't equal reality, and that most people are able to distinguish the two.

What I find offensive is writing. It's laughably terrible, and an offense against the written word. It's bad for a fanfic, much less a best selling book. ("My inner goddess"? Really?) So yeah, I judge your taste if you like it, but not for the reasons you give.
