Storylines that have always bugged you

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any particular storylines from your fandoms that you have always particularly disliked? You love most things about your fandom, but just this one or two little plotlines drive you nuts and you get frustrated every time they come up?

I hate, hate, hate the idea of Bobba Fett surviving the Sarlacc pit. It just adds to his mystique in ways that never used to be canon. It was always one of my least favorite parts of the EU. Him going into the Sarlacc was a fitting end for him.

Actually, that sort of "oh, actually, they're alive" storyline is something I most of the time dislike as a rule anyway.

But at least when it was EU, I could ignore it since I never read those parts. But now, for some stupid, ridiculous reason they've decided to make it canon. Why? There is no good reason to do that. We have Mando now. I'm enjoying the Mandalorian, but this has seriously ruined my enthusiasm for the show.

Still salty about "Jake & Amy never talked about having kids before getting married" on B99. They used to be my favorite fictional couple, and that whole episode was so out-of-character for them. I don't know anyone who actually liked that plot, though, so at least I'm not alone.

River being Amy and Rory’s daughter. I thought that whole storyline was really traumatizing for everybody involved and just didn’t like it. The “See, you got to raise me after all” line that River says to Amy when she regenerates just made it worse because watching out for your best friend isn’t the same thing as raising your baby.

The fact that Iolaus' wife Ania was never again mentioned beyond her initial appearance and that they apparently had two sons together... that were never discussed or seen on screen.

Anything related to Ash Ketchum is plot painful. Also, petty, but I'm still salty over Pikachu never evolving into Raichu. Simply because I find Raichu infinitely cooler and he would have been a fun mascot.

The fact that I can't date or develop any kind of relationship in general with characters in the overwhelming majority of shmups. Guess it's more of a beef related to gameplay than storyline but imagine the potential for storylines if the characters actually mattered.

I'm not really super in the fandom, but there was a thread on here not long ago that made me think of this...

In Warehouse 13, the idea that Pete and Myka had always had feelings beyond friendship. In the final season that came out of NOWHERE for me because it didn't fit with their previous storylines or characterisations, but no...the writers decided to foist it on us regardless. I get that people shipped them, that's what fanfic's for, but canon was never really on board in my opinion. I can accept basically everything else about that finale (although Claudia's journey to Caretaker was too rushed for me) but I will always and forever hate that they paired up the mains.

That one time everybody was guilt-tripping Penny into thinking she was a horrible person for not wanting to have Leonard’s kids. The worst was Bernadette, who was super anti-kids and seemed to resent her own children, but still hopped onto the “you’re not a real woman without children” train. And then Penny got pregnant on accident a few episodes later. It was just a really gross and unnecessary storyline.

I hated SPN's shift from monster of the week to arcs based on angels and demons (though I appreciate demons were already part of it). I even liked Castiel, but bringing religion into it ruined the show for me.

Any of the times that Buffy randomly injected sci-fi levels of technology...basically the robots. It felt unnecessary and created a weird tonal clash. They couldn't have just been magically-created homunculus type things?

I didn't have that problem with the magic-and-tech storylines (Moloch or the Initiative). It makes sense to me that magic things change to adapt to technology and that people would use science to analyze and control the supernatural. Just...why non-magical robots?

Nick Stokes got kidnapped, buried alive, nearly eaten alive by ants, and almost blown up. He grew a terrible mustache for a week, was hesitant to go underground in one episode, and that was it.

The entire Qin-Su story from The Untamed in both the book and the show bugs the ever-loving fuck out of me because it's completely nonsensical from every single aspect and only makes sense if you live in a universe where women don't talk to one another or have relationships.

I get Qin-Su's mother not saying anything before JGY was in their lives, it was a horrible thing for her to go through and she didn't want to talk about it, but the moment Qin-Su started showing interest in JGY there is no good reason at all why she shouldn't have immediately pulled her daughter aside and TOLD HER. But instead she only tells JGY(no more than a week before the wedding at that) and her daughter is left in the dark because she's just a throw-away narrative-prop who's only use is to make the terrible bad-guy look worse when he was already plenty terrible.

It's a completely moronic plot that shouldn't have existed.

Non-sodas with strong flavor

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-12-05 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I was at my dentist this week, and basically due to my bad acid reflux and drinking soda, I'm at risk of losing teeth. He says I need to completely cut soda from my diet.

I've gotten some water mix-ins to drink during day.

Problem is, I can't swallow pills, so I have to chew. And soda is good at masking the flavor of the pills when I chew them.

So I'm looking for non-soda drinks, preferably sugar free, to use for taking meds. I've got some sugar free gatorade to try, but looking for some more ideas. Hate grape juice, cranberry juice is too bitter to work.

Thanks.

Self/Indie Pub Guides

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
(Cozy Werewolf Anon)

Hey guys, I know I tend to pop up to talk publishing all the time! (I'll try to find something else to talk about.) I have finished my 3 Fiction Post Production guides. They are written from the POV if you've never published anything before. So, if any information in them you already know, yay! I've been self-pubbing between fanfic and original IP for 20 years now and this is based on my research/experiences.

They're all FREE. Give them to your friends. Print them. I don't care. I'm trying to stop being writer mom ginny. So I can go "Oh, I have a guide for you." I have fiction books to write!!

Guide One is "I Finished A Book, Now What? A Tongue In Cheek Guide To What Happens Next." It's a very general look at what happens once you've finished a book, types of editing, trad pubbing versus self pubbing, querying, social media for authors, how to make covers, answering first time author myths, and a ton of resources.

https://ginny0.files.wordpress.com/2020/12/i-finished-a-book.pdf

Guide Two is "16 Signs Your Book Isn't Ready to be Self-Published (And Other Things You Should Know.)" This is drawing from my experience reading indie books and takes a look at common book issues from a reader perspective in author terms covering things like prologues, passive voice, story structure, character agency, and thorny issues like comparing yourself to other authors and why do readers put down your book? Nothing is meant to be personal. But dang it, EDIT, EDIT, EDIT.

https://ginny0.files.wordpress.com/2020/12/16-signs.pdf

The last one is "How to Be Successful When You Don't Want to Write To Market (Or How to Get Out of the Algorithm Game.)" This is me confronting the facts of Self-publishing in 2020, what Writing "to market" actually means and how we can utilize alternative ways of publishing to be "discovered." Um, this one is emotionally hard even for me b/c it goes against "put it up on the 'Zon and advertise." It also assumes you've never published fanfic in your life.

https://ginny0.files.wordpress.com/2020/12/how-to-be-successful.pdf

I hope someone finds these helpful. I can answer any questions below. Or my email is on my website, ginny0.wordpress.com if you aren't comfy asking here. And if anyone knows a university that needs someone to teach this shit, I have a very empty schedule. (only partially sarcastic)

Were you ever a BNF? When did you know you were one? What makes a BNF? How did you feel about the status? Please feel free to share any anecdotes about your time as a BNF (or BNF adjacent person) and your fall or fade from the status.

Also accepted are observations regarding fandom behavior and the ascendancy of a BNF.

Bit Weird This Happened Twice Today...

Literally earlier today I listened to a podcast in which one of the podcasters described the fandom as "incredibly horny" and then later I read secret number 4. (These aren't the first times I've seen the sentiment by far, it's just surprising to me it happened twice.)

Is it weird of me to not be surprised when a fandom is 'incredibly' horny?
