Now that the Mass Effect trilogy is done (with the exception of future DLC) I'm scared to death that the fandom will die out someday and that people will at one point stop writing M!Shepard/Kaidan fics. Silly, I know, but it's been so long since I had an OTP I was so passionate about and I don't want it to end :(

I don't hang out in this fandom because it's mostly full of douchey elitists and idiots, but I love talking about my Sims and what others have done with the pre-made Sims. (I know. No one really cares.) I've whethered the glitches and I'm on the third and fourth gen in Sunset Valley and I just want to have conversations with other Sims fans. I want to know what happened to Leighton Sekemoto, the Landgraabs, etc. in your games.

(Also, I looove the new Katie Perry stuff pack because I like dressing my Sims in the skimpiest outfits I can manage. My Sims walk around half-clothed because they are awesome.)

So, the other day I randomly came across the Facebook page of this guy who used to be friends with my brother. My brother quit speaking to because he was always saying homophobic things. Anyway, that guy's Facebook page now proclaims that he's "in a relationship with" some random guy, and that he's "interested in men and women".

Is it wrong that I find this really amusing?

Maybe it's more interesting to consider why you find it amusing.

Visual novels

I wish visual novels had a bigger fandom that wasn't so divided. I wish they were more popular in general.

Visual novels targeted towards straight male audiences (Tsukihime, Clannad, Katawa Shoujo etc) have an overwhelmingly male audience that can sometimes be creepy as shit. I love playing these games for the story as an individual only attracted to men -- Tsukihime is absolutely one of my favorite games despite all the flaws. Katawa Shoujo is great too. I feel a deep attachment to the characters but I don't really want to hear about how much someone wants to stick their dick in their waifu's asshole. I want to talk about the stories and the characters and how brilliantly horrible the diary scene in Tsukihime was.

I guess I'm mad as a feminist that these games tend to be plagued with a lot of misogynist problems and the fanbases tend to have the same issues. I'm already tired of not being able to talk about these novels without getting weird looks anyway. Saying "Despite all the creepy porn scenes, Tsukihime has some really shining moments of writing" already sounds terrible. I wish there was more non-porn ones with good plots. It's a platform with a HUGE amount of potential. It sucks that it's associated with (for good reason) a lot of terrible otaku pandering. Even the good ones seem to have a lot of problems. The creepy fetishizing and glorification of virginity and taking a women's hymen (Tsukihime has some really creepy scenes where the woman doesn't at all enjoy her first time and THAT'S CONSIDERED OKAY) is pretty terrible.

I'm really hoping Tsukihime's supposed remake in progress will revitalize the fandom and bring it to a wider audience. I hope a lot of the creepy pandering parts are taken out, too.

The female-aimed games (BL) just have their own set of problems. The typical yaoi issues of women rarely ever featuring prominently, men having shitty and inconsistent characterization, unrealistic anal sex with little or no lubrication and lots of pain, fetishized rape (nothing wrong with having a rape fetish, but the problematic "He rapes him because he loves him", rape being shrugged off and easily 'forgiven', and "If he didn't REALLY want it, he would've fought back harder" that fangirls treat like a completely healthy relationship), the "top" in a relationship being decided by who looks less feminine (uke/seme dynamics ahoy), etc.

So if I go on a male-based VN forum I get creeps who generally have some shitty views about women, and if I go to a BL VN forum I get a bunch of fangirls who have completely unrealistic views about gay men and just want to see hot seme bishies.

I want a good place to discuss visual novels and the emotional impact and value of their stories with people who aren't creepy motherfuckers.

There are visual novels without crap like this. The problem is finding them, finding translations, and finding anyone to discuss them with. Katahane, for example, is a really good yuri VN. It's R18 but mostly plot-focused; I actually haven't come to a single smut scene yet, though I've been playing it for a while. There are a couple misogynist characters, but to be fair they're in a chapter that takes place 100+ years in the past; the modern portion of the game is devoid of that from what I've seen. Problem is that not many people have played it. The same goes for other VNs out there that aren't the big names.

Also, I have found quite a bit of solid discussion out there for Fate/Stay Night, to be fair.

Man I am so excited about my new fandom. I know what I ship, and what minor characters I want to obsessively meta about, and what sorts of AUs would be the most fun, and what crossovers to plot. I want nothing more than to go find some fic and dive right in! ...but I haven't finished canon yet and I'm scared of finding spoilers. I've already been spoiled for a few things and seriously regret finding them, so I'm really trying to be good now. But... sigh. It's hard. Does anyone else know this feeling??

YES. I'm UK based so I get everything like....yonks after everybody else. And I'm one of those that needs to have DVDs IN MY HANDS or watch the show ON AIR so stuff like...idk Castle? or omg SPN? Ya. Major spoilers.

Also, male member of family likes to actively look up spoilers on the internet, so he's always coming into a room like "GUESS WHO DIES IN YOUR SHOW! THIS GUY!" and I'm just....D:

I like cooking more than eating

Anyone else find that cooking is satisfying enough and that eating is just kind of a bore? I get all antsy and want dinner so finally decide on something only to realize while/after cooking it that the act of cooking was enough and I have no real interest in the actual food. That's probably weird.

I've just sort of arrived at a place where I'm comfortable experimenting in the kitchen without fear of accidentally poisoning myself and yeah, I do that too. I can make a bunch of meals now, no fear of meat (like mom) or of knives (like bro) and you can't get me out of the kitchen. But yes, and as an example, my favorite thing is French Onion Soup so I got my instructions and made some - sweated the onions forever, seasoned, stirred and blah blah did everything. And after I'd stood over the stove for goodness knows how long, I dished up. Everybody loved it, it was great! And had to eat mine cold because it was out for about four hours before I was hungry enough to want it. :(

Is there anywhere to talk about it that's not all about Peter/Neal? I think they're awesome friends or mentor type of deal but I'm not into the sexytimes with this fandom. But I have SO MUCH TO SAY about the episodes and Neal's motivations and their weird sort of twisted friendship and Elizabeth and how awesome Mozzie is and ugh but all the comms seem to focus on sex or bromance or something.

So I read the recent secret about Pottermore disappointment with great interest. I'm on it, but it's really frustrating--there are only so many times that I can duel another house or read inane comments from RPing newbies. I'm pretty disappointed in "The Night Circus" interactive game, too, for much the same reasons: there's no definitive way to advance or "win" the game, and I keep getting the same cards again and again, but nothing changes because I don't have the level or goodies to do anything with them.

So, anyway, here's my question, FS: how would you go about making an interactive game for your favorite fandom (book/show/movie/comic/manga/etc.)?

it would be hard

you would need to send some very internet/fandom-savvy and go do surveys or quietly lurk forums, communities and such to find out what people are interested in

not only that, but a big problem with pottermore is that they underestimated how much server power they would need

you would probably need to hire someone who is good at calculating costs, resources and stuff

you would need to figure out a way to finance it, because let's face, convincing fans to throw money at you is not that easy

and on top of that, find out what is truly feasible and what is just a pipe-dream

and then find a way to mix together all that into something that doesn't leave you broke and that still pleases the fans

so yeah, it's much more money involved than what anyone would think or want; and you'd need to delegate and trust professionals to do a lot of things for you, and ceding control like that to people you don't even know can be very scary, especially control over something you created yourself

I was going through my book collection and realized that I absolutely have no use for my six volumes of Flight, edited by Kazu Kabuishi. It's from my stage where I tried getting comic reccs from "serious review sites", and only kept buying them to be pretentious. I found that a large amount of the entries in each volume disturbed the hell out of me.

But I paid a buttload for them and now I'm depressed that I can't even sell them on ebay. No one wants them. :(

I've made some new friends lately and a couple of them have YouTube channels where they do a nerdy type of show - basic talk show deal. They sent me the links with general "check it out if you're interested!" type message. What's the protocol on feedback? There is definite room for improvement, but I'm not sure if I should say anything constructive since they didn't really ask for it. At the same time I don't want to just compliment them when I think they could do with some improvement. But I don't want to be rude.

well, this is up to you, but if it were me, I would tell them that if they wanted specifically constructive criticism, or just a general viewer opinion, and then just give them whichever they prefer, and then keep watching if you'd like or not; er, I don't know these friends, so they might or might not mind if you keep watching and commenting, this is really a thing you will have to gauge with your knowledge of their personalities

IMPORTANT: they might say concrit is fine even if they're not fine with it; if you get the feeling that they said "criticize away!" just out of obligation, I would do this:

soften the blow and place more emphasis on the parts you liked and just be more general about the parts that need improving; make crazy tactful pirouettes to avoid offending them

this might be a good idea in any case, even if they seem eager for feedback!

after giving this "softened feedback" wait for their response; if they're serious about improving, they will ask for specifics, and then you can give some more of those; back and forth dialogue about more specifics might ensue; in that case, feel ahead to tell them everything!

if they say "thank you, will keep this in mind", just leave it at that and don't give them more criticism, because chances are that they are not looking for that sort of feedback, whatever their reasons might be

and like I said above, how many more videos of them you watch depends on if you actually like their videos and if they would be offended/stop wanting to be your friend/raise a ruckus if you stop commenting/if you even care about them getting angry over it, lol
