I am in my late 20s but everyone else is still in high school or just turned 18. I feel like the biggest weirdo ever.

It is a fandom that I grew up with and at this point I only like GEN stuff within this fandom, but I still feel like a creeper.

I'm in my mid-20s and a teacher. I write a lot of porn for my fandom, and I get squeeing reviews from minors all the time. It creeps me the fuck out and makes me feel like I'm doing something illegal, but I don't want to quit fandom just because I'm getting older.

I finally figured out why I enjoy vampire fictions so much. It's not the drama, not the brooding, not the eternal attractiveness of the 'pires. No, it's the potential for mind-control (compelling/glamoring/whatever) and non-con situations.

Just read a Sherlock BBC Mycroft fic about him "avenging" Sherlock against a female character, and the saddest part about the fic is that the storyline could actually play out in canon. The story reminded me of "Scandal" way too much. Also, it's not like Sherlock's ever been bested by some of his foes before in ACD canon.

Sigh.

Some of my fandom friends used to be friends with each other, and then something happened and now they don't talk anymore. I'm still friends with both of them and occasionally one of them will post something vague and passive aggressive about the other one and it just feels super awkward because I know exactly who they're talking about.

A friend of mine unexpectedly passed away in early 2011. Since then, when I've gone to places or events she'd have liked, I've carried Jolteon, a Pokémon of which she was particularly fond, in my Pokéwalker.

It's an incredibly silly tribute, I know, but I like to think she'd have appreciated it.

Baldur's Gate Expanded Edition

Who else is going to play it? Comes out Sept 21st, and at that point I may as well just toss away weeks of my life, I CAN'T WAIT. (They've got preorders for $17.99 rn - it'll be $19.99 when it's released).

I've been lurking on the BG forums lately and I'm genuinely touched by what's happening - devs getting down with oldfans, modders and bugpatchers, being straightforward about what they can and can't fix, asking people what they'd want to see in DLC. There's so much goodwill. The new character bios have caused shipwank already, and shipwank on a nearly-all-male fansite is always hilarious.

I'm definitely going to play it! I've... never actually played Baldur's Gate, actually, so I'm super excited about remedying that.

(I don't actually know why I've never played it. The first RPG I ever played was Icewind Dale, which I loved, but I never went and played Baldur's Gate after that even. Later on I got hooked on Bioware with Neverwinter Nights... but I still didn't go back to try Baldur's Gate. IDGI.)

((Also, this seems like as good a place to ask as any - is it still using 2nd Edition AD&D rules, or did it get an "upgrade" there as well?))

Fandoms that don't act like fandoms

What I mean is when people get together for discussion but there's little or no fanfic, shipping, etc. All srs bsns without the fun/silly stuff.

Dark Tower fandom is like this - it's like all meta, all the time (which for that series is *fantastic*) but I want a fandom space where I can squee about OMG SHIPPING EVERYTHING and not get run out of the place because of the uncanon.

ASOIAF fandom used to be mostly like that, with fic hidden well away because GRRM hates it and his hardxcore fans were complete bitches about it.

A lot of videogame fandoms are all serious business all the time, too.

I'm bisexual, which obviously isn't a secret. But, weirdly my attraction to a particular gender changes depending on where I am in my cycle. The only time I'm really attracted to men is when I'm ovulating (clever, nature). The rest of the time, I'm all about ladies.

But, more to the point, my tv-watching and fandom participation follows this same damn pattern. I didn't think that I let my hormones rule my life all that much, but wouldn't you know I become more active in fandom when I'm attracted to men.

Not groundbreaking or scandalous or anything, just a little observation about how weird sexuality can be.

I love Thor the best out of all the Marvel movies, and it's not because of Loki, but because the entire cast is fecking awesome.

I would kill for some good gen fic that's not about redeeming him or a character study (even though there are some really good ones out there), or even canon pairings. Sif, Hogun, Jane, Selvig, Frigga, Heimdall, or, even, you know, THOR.

I think that "The Dark Knight Rises" is a really dumb name for a movie, especially coming right after "The Dark Knight". Why not just call it "Rise"?

School's out for summer and all that

I always get so sad when fandom dies/slows from May - August. I mean, I get that most people do fandom to avoid school work or as stress relief and don't want to spend the nice weather inside, but I can't be the only one who looked forward to more time for fandom when I was in school!

(Obviously I'm talking western fandoms, here. I'm sure it's different for other ones.)

I knew there'd be a lot of Inception fans in this fandom who ship Blake/Bane even though the ship makes no sense, but I'm so disappointed that it's almost the ONLY ship out there. Why is there no Bruce/Blake fic? They're Batman and Robin, how can there not be fic? Please tell me I'm not alone in shipping them. (And rec me fics if you know of anything other than the two fics or so on AO3.)
