I agree with this 110 percent.

The most fun pairings are non-canon anyway! They would be so much less fun if they were canon!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You're okay with non-canon shippers until they start acting obnoxious. Seems fair.

This needs to be a secret? I mean, I totally agree. I don't think any of my ships are canon (maybe, like one?), but that's okay. I'm kind of wondering if you and I are in the same fandom, because this situation is VERY applicable to a fandom of mine.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you feel about Star Shipping? Frequently I find myself shipping one-sided ships where the affections or lust of one character for another is blatantly obvious, but technically it's not really a "ship".

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, especially if people start bashing canon for not taking the route they want it to (i.e. what's best for their ship).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like my slash ships and everything, but it annoys me when people in my fandom try to say they're canon.

Anyone else immediately think of "Teen Wolf"/Sterek when they read this?

Teen wolf secret?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a popular ship (maybe the most popular?) in one of my fandoms that some people are like this about, pointing out when the characters look at each other as "evidence" of their tru wuv and saying "oh noes mommy and daddy are fighting" if they argue. I was okay with it for a while, but that was several seasons ago. Now it's just old.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Preaching to the choir! And personally I don't think this needs to be a secret. Fuck the delusionalists.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God THIS. It's especially prevalent (and annoying as hell) in femslash fandoms of ships that have a huge amount of subtext that hasn't been acknowledged as such, either in canon or by the creators/writers/actors, and yet the fans get this ridiculous ENTITLEMENT about their ship because, surely, if the subtext is THAT blatant (in their opinion), it cannot POSSIBLY end up being anything other than endgame, and writers/producers/fans of the show who don't share this view are obviously oppressive homophobes.

...Not that I have, uh, issues with this or anything.
intrigueing: (no hard feelings point break)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-10-06 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I especially hate it when people want canon couples to break up in canon just because they think their never-gonna-happen OTP is better and they can ship their OTP more easily. Not because they think the canon couple is a terrible couple that both characters involved would benefit from ending, just because they think the OTP is better.

Even if the OTP is better than the canon couple, I'd still much rather have the pretty-good canon couple stay together as a second choice rather than have them break up and then proceed to be alone and very much not get replaced by the OTP, especially when actually putting the OTP in place would require dedicating loads screentime/pagetime developing a complicated and out-of-the-blue romance in a movie/show/book where romance elements are minor subplots.
elaminator: (Dragon Age 2: Fenris)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-10-06 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly agree with this?

I don't think there's any harm with someone jokingly making comments about that sort of thing (as long as it isn't constantly, because I could see that getting annoying), and even if the person truly believes it I don't see the problem as long as they don't go around screaming "Everyone else is wrong, and you guys are blind!".

So...while I think it's best to realize that it's okay to love your ships even if those ships aren't canon, and accept them for what they are instead of looking for 'evidence' of the contrary, as long as the person isn't being a dick, it doesn't bother me too much.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not in either of these fandoms but it seems like this is especially bad with Merlin and Supernatural?

I do think it's deluded. Especially with a lot of slash ships that are never gonna be canon, and the looks or hugs etc are just this strange thing called friendship and platonic love. Seems to be a problem for some people to accept that.

I tend to wonder how many people legitimately fit into this category. I, personally, have been part of a fandom that giggled and made up reasons for why "this pairing is totally canon;" but none of it was in seriousness and all of it was just for fun. Still, it's not like anyone ever asks if people really believe their ship is canon, and it's not like anyone ever offers up this information, especially when it's all a big inside joke to them.

This is just me being curious, though.

I agree. But equally obnoxious are those who ship canon ships who lord it over those in competing ships, talk about having won, feel the need to shove their ships being canon in everyone's face at every opportunity, and act like everyone should ship their ship just because it is canon.

Sounds like Destiel, Sterek, Merthur or just about every other major ship in existence.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A+ secret!

Also, another horrible thing is the fact that if you ship a non-canonical pairing, it's like a rule or something that you have to hate the ever-lasting fuck out of any character that "gets in the way". Even if they're not. Especially if they're female.

It's so astoundingly pointless and such a waste of energy.

THEY KISSED SO IT'S 100% CANON OMG

(If you don't read Homestuck, let me assure you that kiss... reeeeally does not count)

Yep yep yep.

Especially when fans get mad and entitled towards the creators and say they're terrible writers for not making their ship canon like it's sooo obvious they should be together. And I see this a lot with ships that have little canon support to go by.

Maybe some people feel they can only ship something if it's canon?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
-shrugs- Tbh, I've gotten so used to this attitude in my main fandom [which is *loosely* based on history, so everyone and their dog seems to declare 'History makes X.y or z canon!'], that it's just kind of like water off a duck's back at this point.

Personally, I'm more annoyed by the people who do the 'I'MMA SHIP X, OR Y PAIRING TO BRING DOWN PAIRING Z!'
