Hey folks. I'm currently alone in NYC at the end of a research trip! Right now I'm at MoMA about to watch a free film noir, but I have no idea what to do after it ends at 830. What can a person stuck with a heavy backpack do alone late night in New York on the cheap?

Remembered something I learned in history once

A few years ago, a history professor explained that the possessive 's, which I wondered about ever since I learned what contractions were, was originally also a contraction. According to him, the linguistic intermediary or whatever between "the house of John" and "John's house" was "John his house". And I guess constructs like "Mary'r house" never took off because, well, the whole women and property thing back then.

I thought this was a fascinating bit of trivia (if it's true) at the time, but just now I realized it's also hilarious, because if it is true, and tumblr finds out...ohhh boy. We could start seeing a movement to abolish 's and replace it with 'r, and that would be a glorious train wreck.

I fucking love making mix tapes, and we end up talking about music on here enough that I think there might be enough people to make this happen.

How I'm imagining this working is that everybody gets paired up with one other person, you make a mix tape/playlist on 8track or whatever, and then send them the link. They would then give you feedback (anything from "this was great, I really liked track 2" to detailed track-by-track reviews) and hopefully also send you a mix to review. Alternatively, everybody could just post links in general chat when they're done and people could review it there. I don't mind running it if we need someone to pair up usernames.

Today I had an interesting dream, and woke up before it finished. So I, as I had done a few times before, fallen asleep again to try and continue it. This time it actually worked, but it didn't finish. It just continued for a bit.

I have had it be the case that I wake up, fall asleep, and the whole dream repeats, but that was a nightmare.

Anyone else ever try that? and how successful are you?

How does the German school system discuss Nazism in their history classes? Is it just glossed over, discussed in depth, or given no more or less attention than other parts of history?

And how about the general public? I know you can't just go up to someone on the street and be like, "how about them nazis?" But how do they discuss it (especially older generation who was alive and maybe actively participated vs their children/grandchildren)?

asking for recs again! sorry this is so late.

I work tomorrow also, and won't get on until way late because secrets post early, but I do not work on Sunday and Sunday I WILL POST THE POLL.

The poll will be open for a week or so. I hate to rush it, but I want to give people enough time to vote and then obtain the book that's chosen. We'll be reading it as August's book and discussing it at the end of August.

If anyone wants me to push the poll back, let me know. I can also add recs partway through, though it might decrease their chances of getting picked.

someone wanted me to make the poll a Vote-Top-3 thing, but I'm kinda hesitant to do that unless we get a few more choices, since right now we only have seven recs. I may do it anyway or go with top 2. Feedback much appreciated on this as well.
