It's not a skill, just the knowledge (so you could download Kung Fu but you'd still be out of shape if you're not already in shape, for example).

Roommates and cleaning

Do you ever "play chicken" with your roommates and cleaning? I have three other flatmates, but I'm by far the one who cleans the most, and I am almost always the one who does things like take down the garbage or clean the shower drain. I'm getting kind of tired of always being that one, though I try to politely hint that we should all try to be on top of these things. So, being a bit petty, I decided just not to do it. I didn't take down the garbage, now it's disgustingly overflowing to the point of garbage being on the ground.

Do I keep playing chicken, or is this a losing battle?

I'd like to ask the serious fanficcers a question, the people who write those wonderful long and mainly genfics. That take care to craft a story the sits comfortably within, and often stands up as well as, their chosen canon fandom.

How do you manage to keep your characters "voices" in keeping with their canon sources. Are there any tricks you use to make sure your characters sound, in vocabulary, speech patterns, and general mindset, like they do on page or on screen? I've tried writing fanfic, and inevitably, sooner or later, my versions of the characters always seem to lose their own voice and become generic and flat. How do I avoid this, have you guys got any advice to retain their individuality? I feel I'm at a point in my writing that I'm hitting this wall and struggle to keep my characters' individuality, and I've no idea how to overcome it.

I was having this discussion with someone who thinks masturbation in the context of a relationship is an unhealthy expression of sexuality. And it wasn't a bad discussion, all things considered. We were very civil with each other.

But then I just found out that they fuck their own children.

Like, they were raised in an incestuous environment, where they had to fuck their parents from a young age, and now they're continuing it in their own household with their own kids...and they're sitting there saying masturbation is unhealthy.

I feel so, so fucking dirty right now. I mean, I can appreciate it that they're traumatized and fucked up, and clearly they never dealt with that, but...they're repeating the pattern. And then they're turning around and declaring masturbation unhealthy.

I don't know what the point of this is, I just needed to say it somewhere to someone because it's making me feel a lot of unpleasant things.

I'm in a strange situation. I'll try to condense the story as much as possible, but I'm sort of flip-flopping on what to do.

So, basically, a few years back I had a friend I RPed in a certain fandom with, and we had this storyline that was truly grandiose that we'd started playing out. Unfortunately, as happens with fandom friendships, we eventually started drifting apart until we just sort of stopped talking entirely, and it's been that way since.

I've fandom-hopped a bit, but lately I've had a resurgence of love for this old fandom of mine, and I've been thinking a lot about that storyline. I don't think there's any chance of "getting back together" with my old RP partner, and I'd feel exceptionally weird asking someone else to play it out with me.

My question is, how uncouth would it be for me to take that storyline and turn it into a fic? I think I could do it, and I honestly think it would be a really great fic, but...it's also not entirely my own, which is why I feel a little off about it. I was pondering maybe putting in an author's note mentioning my old partner and thanking her, but I'm not sure.

Anyone have any thoughts?
