I had e-mailed my ex-step-mother and never heard back. I honestly thought that she would never check the e-mail. But today I saw UPS come to the house and give me a big box. And inside were the stockings for me and my brothers and the ornaments and a few other things that belonged to dad! I'm just so thrilled I could have this back and I can't wait to see my brothers faces when they open the box.

So that's it, good news! :-D

Representation, Recognition and nothing at all

An example: Before Sherlock made a habit of "Hur hur, people think John and Sherlock are GAAAAY!!! Hur hur!!!" I didn't have a problem with, say, the scene in the diner shortly after they first meet and Sherlock thinks John is interested in him.

And not only did I not have a problem with it, I actually liked it, because it was recognition that gay people exist and that's fine. John wasn't gay and didn't want to be misidentified, but he wasn't all "THE HORROR!!" (yet). Recognition still felt like positive forward motion to me, and I appreciated it.

I recently came across a similar situation in a different, well-established fandom that I was looking forward to reading reaction to, and literally everyone was absolutely livid over it. And that seemed to stem mostly from there not being enough representation on the show. They didn't give a fuck about the recognition, they -- I guess -- wanted to turn back the hands of time and recast with acceptably diverse people (even though from a race and gender standpoint, the cast was pretty diverse. Just cishet).

And it just seemed like counterproductive screeching to me. And I get wanting more representation -- I really do -- but I don't think we need to castigate established canons that try to include some recognition. Because the alternative is nothing at all.

But IDK. Maybe I'm not being "progressive" enough?

Interesting Writing Group discussion

So a small writing circle I'm in (for fan and original stuff) had an interesting discussion about characters and development and I wanted to pose it here to see what people thought.

Which of these would you call a Mary Sue?

A.)Character with limited skillset and no 'special positions' (ala Avatar, Boy Who lived, Prophecy and the like) with plenty of people more skilled than them. But their enemies and problems always seem to play to their strengths in some way (or luck). Their enemies are usually possessing the same level and skills as them.

or

B.) Character with talents and a diverse skill set, maybe some special plot position. They're really talented at some things, and tend to do alright in others. However their enemies are very powerful and they always end up needing help from the team to defeat them.

Additionally would the genders of either character matter? Would it make a difference if A was a boy and B was a girl or vice versa?

Personally I believe A is the Mary Sue because regardless of how skilled they are compared to others, if the plot plays to their strengths than that's the problem. As for gender, I honestly think it shouldn't matter either way.

Friendships with large age differences

F!S, what are your feelings/thoughts on friendships with large age gaps? I'm 35 and through a mutual hobby it seems I'm becoming friends with a 21-year-old. I never really thought about it before - and while most my friends are actually younger, I never had one with an age gap of almost 15 years.

What do you think - can it work? Is it weird? Do you have experience with it?

Artificial Humans

So, I was watching Pixel Perfect. For those not familiar with it, it's a Disney movie about a guy that creates a hologram singer for his friend's band. At one point in the movie, people are discussing how holographic popstars would be great for the music industry because they don't need to be paid and can work nonstop.

Usually with robots/androids/artificial humans, there's a fear that they'd take away jobs from factory workers or others working in similar jobs. Do you think they could also replace humans in the entertainment business such as actors, models, etc. This is assuming they're able to replicate emotions and look fully human.

There's a tumblr user that I really love. I want to send her an ask to tell her how great she is but I don't want to sound too enthusiastic and weird. Any advice on what to say?

Also, I reblog all her stuff on a side blog. It's not connected to my main blog. I don't think there's a way to ask from the side blog (is there?). So, should I make the ask anonymous with my side blog name? Or use my main blog? I just don't think she would know me from my main blog and it would be nice to keep them separate.

Bookmarks getting out of control!

Does anyone else have this issue?

I'll be on a site and see a link for an article or something that looks interesting but that I don't have time to read at the moment, so I'll bookmark it and continue on with what I was doing, intending to go back later and read it. Except I never do, and I keep on adding more bookmarks and now I've got approximately eleven billion of them and it annoys me that my bookmarks menu/folder is so cluttered, but I can't bring myself to delete any of them, because hey, what if I need that information some day?

And sometimes I'll sit down intending to read some of them, but I'll open one, and it's a long article, and it's got like ten links in it and I've course I need to save all THOSE too and it's just never ending.

Okay, so I know it's not even really a problem and it's really dumb but is anyone else annoyed by this kind of thing?

Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

Like, why? Is it so hard to believe that there are people who are in fandom, people who sometimes hang out on this comm, that aren't overweight?

Silly Questions

I've been reading a lot of fairy tales lately and now I've got some speculative questions.

In stories where someone promises their first-born to whatever creature they're dealing with:

1. What happens if they're sterile?
2. What's keeping them from remaining celibate? Would the creature use underhanded means to attain the baby?
3. Would adopted children not count, since they specifically mention the first born child?
4. If the person dies before they have children, would the promise still need to be fulfilled in an alternate way? Like, take their sibling's child instead?
5. What does the creature want the child for?

I'm curious but all the stories I've read the creature is defeated or there is some loophole and the child isn't given away. Any recommendations for stories that address these questions?

"Unwritten rule" about characters' sexualities, kind of related to above thread

So if Character A has been involved with a woman in the past in canon, but there's been several instances of other characters thinking he's gay, and the actor says that he plays him as bisexual, and Character B has had absolutely no mention whatsoever of his romantic life, it's not that unreasonable to ship them, right? A can totally be bi (or even gay because hey, plenty of gay guys have dated women before coming out) and B can be anything because they've never said anything either way.

But no. According to my friend there's an "unwritten rule" that unless a character has been explicitly stated to be gay they're straight. And because A has been romantically interested in women in canon, there's no way that he could ALSO like guys because "the writers wouldn't do that".

I don't want to say the fandom because it's really small and I don't want to start drama, but does anyone agree with what she says? I feel like that was definitely the case at one point, but I'd hope we're moving beyond that now...

I have been grading exams for the past 17 hours or something and I want to die. Fuck the professor who felt that it was ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to have 100 questions on the exam, and I have 70 students.

What are your work-related woes?
Alternatively, what should I do to cheer myself up afterwards? I was thinking of eating ice cream and watching a movie. What do you do to cheer up/unwind?
