I know what you mean. I, personally, refuse to watch horror movies written by anyone who has never murdered someone. They just don't get it!

EDIT now that I'm done being a facetious asshole: Also the Ace community is not a hivemind and most of them don't demonize sex. IDK what corners of the net you've been in, but you should maybe find new ones.

I get you're trying to be controversial and 3edgy5me and all, but let's be real, this is a little silly because you've probably already done it without realizing and it was indistinguishable enough so that you never suspected.

If you're looking up every author because you care that much, though... you do you, badboy. Fight the man

I agree with you tbh. That's why I only read crime novels written by people who are actually murderers. I say we should leave murder mysteries to the people who actually care about murdering.

As someone who (if forced to choose a label) would probably choose asexual, only because I don't like the idea of sex with another person/outside myself, I think this is a silly attitude.

As sad above, asexual people are no more a hivemind than any other denomination of sexual attraction (or any other denomination of person for that matter). To say every asexual demonizes sex and couldn't possibly write good smut is stupid.

Plus, unless they're out there with their sexuality, would you even know if you read something written by someone who IDs as asexual?

Ugh. No. Do you read action/adventure fics fics only written by people who get regularly attacked in their real lives? Do you only read torture fics by people with experience in torture? Do you only read historical fics by people who lived in that period? You don't have to have experienced something to write about it.

I know at least two authors in my fandom who are asexual but who write really good porn.

Well dammit. I was going to write a story about a wizard-in-disguise serving as a soldier in an early 18th-century-esque army, and her magic talking dog, but I guess that's off the table now, seeing as I was born two and a half centuries too late and have never served in the military and can't use magic and have never owned a dog.

Do you feel the same way about virgins who write smut?

But seriously just because someone doesn't experienced sex or hasn't had a personal experience with it doesn't mean they can't writ about it.

They're not the character having sex.

So, I assume you also refuse to read slash written by lesbians, domestic fics, by single people, and so forth?

C'mon, I assume your stance is coming from a "write what you know' place, but don't you think there's too much badly written erotica to blame it all on 'lack of knowledge or interest in the subject"? Just because you do (or don't do) something in real life doesn't mean you can (or can't) write it well; empathy and storytelling skill (or lack of them) contribute quite a bit.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-02-21 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, what a pretty pic!
What about virgins writing smut? Or lesbians writing slash?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Asexual means not physically attracted to other people, not doesn't have a sex drive, nor doesn't want, or ever have sex. Plenty of asexuals want or have sex either because they want to and enjoy it, or as part of the relationship to keep the relationship mutually happy.

Also, asexuals can read and watch porn. They also have the necessary body parts to do so. It's like saying teenagers, and virgins can't write or draw porn because they've yet to have sex.

I'm trying to figure out how you can know an author is asexual before you read a fic. Unless they have it on a public profile or something. I write smut, but I don't say anything about my orientation anywhere public (I'm bi).

One of my favorite smut fics was written by an author who I later found out is asexual. I was absolutely blown away. But I figure, I've written kidnappings and murders, so why not? Also, I know far too many people who have had sex, but are terrible at writing smut.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You're missing out. I've read some great porny fic by ace people (and virgins.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends for me. I read plenty of smutty fic written by asexual people whucgwere awesome, because they (for example) excelled at the characterization and the power dynamic, even aside from the sexual appeal.

there are some asexual people who have issues and who act like assholes about sex. but they're either young or unsympathetic and unempathic in a way that makes their regular writing unpalatable anyway.
kallanda_lee: (New Bucky)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-02-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, this is a weird argument.

Good writing s good writing.

An asexual person might research and write a good sex scene, just like a pacifist might write a good war novel, or a regular person might write a sociopath character.

My point is: if you won't even read it, how do you know?

If I would read fic by someone and their sex scenes would be bad, and THEN I'd find out they're asexual, yeah, I'd probably think it has to do with each other - but frankly most of the time I know nada about an author's sex life.

Ace porn writers, report!

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-02-21 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not ace per se, but through high school and much of college I had an illness that left me with no libido whatsoever. It was a bit of a shock when I got healthier and realized I was capable of sexual attraction. After my feelings evened out a bit, I decided sex still wasn't something I was interested in.

While I was sick, I got Editor's Choice on Literotica twice. I'm coming out with another story soon.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
There are so many things to comment on here...

1 - Asexual does not mean "doesn't have sex ever". So, an asexual writer can write sex scenes based on experience in the same way that a sexual person can. They can also mimic others' writings about sexual feelings, if necessary, to make the story more complete.

2 - Do you also not read M/M sex scenes written by heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual/pansexual females? Because that's 95% or more of most fandoms. (Bonus Info: Asexual is not a type of sexual orientation.)

3 - How would anyone know that any writer is asexual? I don't know of anyone who would put it in an author's note before a story with smut. They might post about it in a flocked journal but that would presume that you've been following them and reading their other fic, so you must enjoy their writing? I'm so confused.

Also, I would like to direct you to Asexuality.org so that you can better understand the community and the differences on the Asexuality spectrum.

Okay, so I'm 99% certain this is a troll secret, but on the 1% chance I'm wrong...

I have read so much absolutely terrible smut written by "those who care about it", I refuse to believe the average ace author could do worse. On the contrary, authors who are guided by what makes them personally happy in the pants do such a crap job of conveying that feeling to other people so much of the time, I reckon someone who's disinterested actually stands a great chance of doing better.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really read a profile about the author before reading the fic, so I wouldn't know. A good writer is a good writer in my experience, background be damned. Tho I guess I assumed aces would have other things they were more interested in writing.

I can see having this reaction to a writer who's so vocally, obnoxiously disgusted by sex that it's hard to imagine that wouldn't come across in their writing, but I've never actually seen someone like that write explicit sex scenes. They tend to write Sex Brood and weird stuff like that. I've actually seen more bad smut from sexual people in long marriages than anyone else, lol. But honestly, a person's orientation and experience doesn't have much to do with their ability to write about sex. You have to be able to step outside your own point of view to write about anything but yourself anyway. And your inhibition levels and basic attitudes toward writing about the topic make a big difference. People make a huge deal about it while blithely writing about things like torture and murder, it's hilarious. A good asexual author who approaches writing sex like writing any other kind of scene is probably going to do better than a highly sexual one who buys into the idea that sex is too mysterious and indefinably whatever-the-fuck to ever express in words omg and completely abandons style and character to fall back on the same old cliches about the universe and the dance as old as time and all that. I open every book expecting that shit by now, but it still surprises me every time. It's like, really? You could do anything you wanted and still chose that? lol

(Anonymous) 2016-02-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
this is b8 but ia with the part about how nasty the asexual community is about we filthy allosexuals so i try to avoid any sexual content made by anyone i know is asexual, idc how good it is.
