Do you think these are designed to appeal to men ("Girls are gross, we hate them get them off my screen") or appeal to women ("Lots of hot men! Being manly and sexy. Something for the moms!")

Smacking/slapping during sex

(Anonymous) 2016-06-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
https://www.buzzfeed.com/laraparker/putting-the-d-in-disney?utm_term=.ppwl17wO1#.deMaz1LVz

So this is a shitty buzzfeed article, but this stood out to me:
"When he unexpectedly slaps your face with his penis"
"When he aims for your face, but you have to protect your eyes."

Is this just something people do without asking permission? I would have thought that slapping someone or coming on their face is something you should at least ask before doing, but this makes it sound like people just do it and you just have to live with it? Is this just buzzfeed being dumb, or is it realistic?

Is there a word for when more you know someone, the less you want to have sex with them to the point where imagining it is actively offputting?

Most people seem to find each other more appealing or attractive or sexy with more information or intimacy, not the opposite.

Do you feel the need to tell anyone (especially family members) that you're asexual?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-30 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I know we have some asexual users/regular anons here, and I'm curious. There was a discussion about this recently on an asexual forum I go to, and the general consensus seemed to be that you need to tell people (mainly family members/parents). I'm just kind of...not sure why?

I'm asexual myself, so I'm not trying to criticize it or anything. I definitely believe it's a legitimate sexual orientation, but just not really in the same way as being gay/bi/whatever else. Saying basically "hey, here's the gender(s) you should expect me to date" makes sense but what you are and aren't sexually attracted to/do and don't want to do sexually seems kind of irrelevant to anyone you're not having sex with.

I'll tell my family that I'm not interested in a relationship right now and am not sure if I ever will be, but I just don't feel like they need to know anything about my sex life (or lack thereof). It kind of seems like telling your family you're into S&M. I mean, you could if you wanted to, but why is it really necessary?

But apparently this means I'm "being dishonest" and "hiding who I am" according to some people, which doesn't really make much sense to me.

What you do all think? (And hell, even if you're not asexual, do you feel the need to tell your family what you are/aren't into sexually?)

In particular: what do you use to refer to sex? "Banging"? "Doing it"? "Making love"? "Sleeping with"?

Book club: August recs and question

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-06-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, a reminder: we are reading Para Handy by Neil Munro for July, specifically, if possible, this edition.

Secondly, I am taking recs for August! We have a half-dozen so far. I think I will keep recs open until Sunday or Monday and then put up the poll. TITLE AND AUTHOR required for the rec to be accepted.

Here are the ones we have so far:

The Turner Diaries by Andrew Macdonald*
The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans
Angelmass by Timothy Zahn
The Tin Princess by Phillip Pullman
Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys. by Viv Albertine
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood

*This brings me to my question...

I'm not really comfortable accepting books that constitute hate speech for book club. I will include it if most of you guys want me to, since I did say any novel-length book was fair game. I really didn't expect this kind of thing to be included. Please let me know what you think. Again if this book were to somehow win I would not be comfortable reading it but I can't stop y'all.

Re: Book club: August recs and question

(Anonymous) 2016-06-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I would strongly support not including it. I think it would be better to say that this is not the book club for anyone who considers that a deal breaker.

+1

The Pride of Chanur by CJ Cherryh.

Technically the first in the Chanur saga, this one stands alone well and is pretty accessible. Cherryh does the best aliens in the business, and Pyanfar is one of my favorite characters of all time.

Have you done any Octavia Butler yet? Specifically 'Dawn'? (It's the first in Lillith's Brood but I think it stands on its own) If not, then I rec that.

I suggest not including it, the same we switched the book before when jokingly Pounded in the Butt won the poll. This is supposed to be fun and I don't think it should be an option for the poll. You're running this for fun and I think we should avoid books that are outright hate speech. Not saying we should avoid books that make us think or are controversial in some other way, but this defeats the purpose of book club.

(June was crazy and I didn't get to read the book, sorry!)

I've read it (as part of a "read a banned book that you think will offend YOU" challenge) and I wanted a Silkwood shower afterward. So I vote for NOPE.

I'd like to rec His Majesty's Dragon, the first novel in the Temeraire series, by Naomi Novik. From TVTropes:

This Alternate History series sets out to answer a vital question that has intrigued historians for centuries: What would The Napoleonic Wars have been like if the countries involved fought them with dragons?

I originally read Temeraire when I was looking for books like the Aubrey-Maturin series and it's really cute and good.

I'm not really comfortable accepting books that constitute hate speech for book club.

Then I think that's all that needs to be said. There's nothing wrong with changing the rules if a situation comes up that you never envisioned when you originally wrote them.
