What do you always have on you when you head out the front door? Regardless of circumstances, what will you always have with you?

I was thinking about this today because my dad was telling me about a mnemonic his dad taught him for it, patterned after blessing himself (up, down, right, left, like a cross): Spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch. Which is kind of cool and datable since you pat a pocket for the watch, indicating a pocketwatch rather than wristwatch. Doesn't work for me, since I lack at least one major component, but it made me think about it.

Myself, I'll always have spectacles, keys, phone, lip balm and my St Christopher.

Probably-white characters you pictured as non-white

So, lbr: for most characters written by a white author and aimed at a mainstream western audience, if their race is not specified (or hinted at through their name, culture, national origin), are probably "intended" by the author to default to white. It's kind of shitty (and not actually binding canon, IMO) but true.

But, for a lot of people, especially when they were kids, their automatic mental picture of a character whose race is never mentioned may still be non-white. I'm not talking about deliberately deciding to interpret a character as non-white, but just the image that automatically pops into their head when reading the book may be non-white. Even if it's highly unlikely that the author intended it.

Have you ever had this happen to you? What character, and how old were you, and do you have any idea why you pictured them this way (i.e., your own upbringing or family/community makeup, or some kind of other association in your mind, etc.)

Sitting around, listening to MGS music and getting all nostalgic, when I come across fanmixes that edit the main theme into music from Portable Ops, Peace Walker, and TPP. And it just feels wrong, somehow.

Then, listening to the theme from MGS3 again, I think I get it: the Main Theme is a dirge for the Boss, the heroic patriot, and a celebration of the man who inherits her true Will (Solid Snake).

It doesn't play for Big Boss. He's a legendary soldier, but he was never a hero.

Not the scariest, but years ago someone who actually shared my ship said they'd stop talking to RL people if they didn't ship Ron/Hermione.

And I don't think they were kidding. That crowd was a little intense.
