Actor stanning has always been there in fandom, it's not a new thing, but it certainly feels like being just as obsessed with the cast as well as the characters has become an expected norm in fandom and I hate it.

I don't want to squee over the actors when I'm talking about the characters, I don't care about keeping up with whatever they're doing outside of the role I enjoyed. I want to ambivalently ignore them but modern fandom makes that so hard.

I agree. I'm not even in live action fandoms! I'm in Resident Evil fandom and I don't give a damn what Leon's face model says or thinks or does. It has nothing to do with Leon. It has nothing to do with me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is part of why I am always so disappointed when something I like gets a LA adaptation, especially books. I’m here for the thing. Let me enjoy the thing. Go enjoy the ancillary things somewhere else. But nope, that chatter always takes over the main fandom spaces and no one talks about the actual subject(s) of the fandom anymore :(

Yeah it certainly feels like it's gotten louder and more expected over the years, not to mention the weird pseudo-shippy shit people do with the pair of actors of a popular fandom ship were people over analyse what they say/do together to get some bizarre bff's status from the fanbases perspective.

I just want to like the canon as it is man.

True story, that's one of the reasons I left the Heroes fandom way back when. I didn't care about Milo Ventimiglia(sp?) or Zach Quinto. I wanted to talk about the show. Seems like it's only gotten more cast-focused.

I learned my lesson about squeeing over actors during Tom Cruise's weird phase. After that I swore off following or learning about actors beyond their CV. It really ruined the shows/movies if they turned into weirdos/abusers/finding out they are actually awful people.

It could also be economy of scale. Back in 99 when the master/apprentice subfandom of SW slash went gaga over Liam and Ewan (I watched a lot of really bad movies for those two actors), fandom as a whole was much smaller. Subsets of subsets of fandoms were so small you'd know everyone by name even if you were lucky to have more than one forum/shrine/webring. So, yeah, it happened, but on a much smaller scale because the fandom overall was small.

Scale up to huge juggernauts that even Good Morning America (gag) knows about and mentions, SDCC being 100k people every year, and social media providing 27 platforms for a fandom instead of 2...yeah, the subset is now larger, and unavoidable even if you just want to sit in your otp shipping space and trade fics.

Not as common but it has become a thing in non-live-action fandoms as well with Voice Actors and I always disliked it. I really appreciate the work behind the scenes, but I'm not interested in discussing about the VAs, Devs, writters or Animators in a fanish sense.

There *are* actors I'm a fan of, who I'll watch random things for, but yeah, like... if I'm in a fandom for a show where I just care about the characters, I don't need to know every other project the actors do? If I happen to really like them, I'll see something else they did and either I'll be a fan of their general work or I'll think oh, they played ONE part I liked well and that's it.

But then you get into fandoms where like... people get invested in the actors' PERSONAL LIVES, even beyond 'oh if you like the show then you must want to squee over this photoshoot or this red carpet or this unrelated project', and people who like... hate an actor's girlfriend? And that whole side of fandom is just wild to me.

I'm sick of modern sci-fi showrunners tossing women and minority actors off the glass cliff to try and exculpate themselves from having written shitty shows. Just write better shows and better scripts for the actors, and it won't matter who the actors are.

I agree but also I’d like to see those roles written for those actors. No more of this colorblind bullshit where you have POCs playing characters who are very obviously white (and usually middle class).
