Mid-life crisis at 24. :( Graduated college, taught English abroad for two years, now am back where I started, not knowing what to do with my life. I feel like I need to start my CAREER since I have so many friends that are finding work in the fields they want to be in, but my interest is writing, history and global studies and the best I've got is an unpaid internship at a small local newspaper (and I'm not really interested in journalism). I just can't decide what I want to be when I grow up. I know I need to narrow down my interests, but for some reason find it so hard to sit there and make these decisions. I know some people don't decide what they want to do until much later in life, but I still feel like I'm a fish out of water and not sure which way the water actually is.

When I was in high school, I was really drawn to Wicca and earth centric paganism, and I was genuinely moved by it, not in a like, trying to be an edgy teenager kind of way. I really found a lot of the stuff inspiring. I'm an atheist in mind, but spiritually feel at home with pantheistic new age polytheism. I decided to write an article about Wicca for my blog today and dug out a couple old books I had and got all nostalgic. It made me want to identify as neopagan or Wiccan again.

Everyone who has ever felt out of place, didn't know what you were supposed to do with your life, felt lonely, confused about your sexuality or just had a hard time as a teenager needs to read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Saenz.

It's about two Mexican-American boys in the late-80s who are seemingly completely different yet end up being best friends. I can't express how much I related to these characters. I felt like I was there with them.

I killed a mouse, and it's silly, but I feel irrationally sad and guilty about it.

My house has mice, and it's annoying because they destroy things and get into my food, which I then have to toss. I've caught one, and released it in a nearby park. Yesterday I caught another, but I must have squished it, or it got a heart attack - I dunno, in any case, RIP mouse.

I feel so bad about it, especially as it was pretty cute and it still moved when I caught it. I feel a bit of a hypocrite, as I'm not vegetarian or whatever and I pretty much eat dead animals daily. But there's something about this one that bugs me. Maybe because it was unintentional, and because the death was pointless. Oh well :(

Narrative songs

Some of my very favorite songs are ones that tell a story. It's part of the reason I like Al Stewart so much- I even take my username from one of his songs. What are your favorite narrative songs??

Some of mine:
Al Stewart- Roads to Moscow, Night Train to Munich, or in a less historical vein Night of the 4th of May or Electric Los Angeles Sunset.

Other people- Girl Laying Down, Percy's Song, The Very Last Night, All for You, Sophia (Okay yeah I have a thing for historical stuff, I know), Cherry Lips, I Saw You in the Wild, The Cold Swedish Winter, and maybe Orange Fell (I am actually at this concert!)

Fanvidding help

Inspired by the favourite fanvids thread yesterday... I have an idea for a fanvid that just won't leave me alone. Nobody else seems to have done it.

So, I want to create a fanvid.

But I don't know where to begin, I'm not some professional filmmaker or editor, and I don't have the money to spend on quality software.

Any advice or suggestions or how-tos? Any free software that's actually decent?

Allergies

I usually have mild allergies during the summer and take medicine for them and it's pretty much fine, not a big deal. For some reason now I'm having awful allergies-- like, to the point where I can barely function because of sneezing fits-- and I have no idea why. It's September and there's definitely no pollen left around where I live, I don't have pets, I'm not living anywhere new and it doesn't seem to matter where I am. I can't figure it out and the drug I usually use in the summer isn't working very well any more :( has anyone else ever had random allergy attack from the pit of hell?
