This, so, so, so much. I'm so sick of people dramatically disowning actors and celebrities over problematic jokes. They're living, breathing human beings, they are allowed to say stupid things sometimes. Nobody can be perfect.

(plus, if you ask me, rape jokes as such are not an absolute no-go.)

I have yet to hear him say something that would really repulse me, and I don't care about all the petty SJ stuff fans scold him for. I still think that he is likely to be a decent person, as much as I can say that about someone I don't personally know.

I'm not all up in arms over it, and it won't automatically stop me from watching something he is in (although I still have no desire to see The Hobbit and I've given up on Sherlock for other reasons), but I do think it was an asshole move. And he shouldn't have said it.

Yes, it was a joke, but joking about raping someone really is never okay. It is part of rape culture. Rape is not a light subject, nor one that should be joked about. Joking about it makes it seem trivial and not a big deal. Such that people will still look much more askance at a victim who was drunk/drugged than at the perpetrators.

I'm actually disappointed with the amount of people who are treating it so cavalierly. Saying things like "well, it was about elves" or "of course he would never rape someone" and "why are you taking it seriously?" I think it is a subject that should be taken seriously. Although I suppose a lot of you will say I am a SJW for thinking like that.

I'm tired of people (mostly Tumblr) losing their collective shit over his "rape joke".

1) He was NOT advocating rape, he was drawing a pointed and sarcastic connection between using date rape drugs to overcome your victim = rape, which is, you know, 100% correct.

2) Fandom wouldn't be so mad about an admittedly poor taste "joke" if it hadn't built him up to an unrealistic level of perfection beforehand.

It made me uncomfortable and I didn't think it was funny. I don't think it makes him the worst person in the world, but it's still upsetting as someone that's been raped to see rape used as a joke.

Do I think the joke means he's the worst person ever and should GDIAF? No. Would it stop me from seeing the movie? No. (Not going to anyway--not interested in the Hobbit movies.) But I do think it was an asshole thing to say and if someone made a joke like that around me, I'd definitely let them know I didn't appreciate it.

Anyway, the joke was stupid and tasteless but I don't think it makes him the worst person in the world. Rape jokes are definitely gross imo, but at the same time he's human like everyone else, says things he shouldn't from time to time, and I'm not going to stop watching him because of it.

However, yes, I get why people are upset, and don't think it's unreasonable to be. (Certain people just take it too far.)

Then there's everyone who already hated him for being in problematic shows and movies and jumped on this to validate their hate and shame his fans (they're disappointed in him? Serves them right for liking him in the first place!) I wonder if they'd gracefully bow out of fandom if it had been one of their favorite celebrities. I also think there's a number of people, on the internet and off, who have gotten ridiculously sensitive about shit people say. You want to get all over someone for what they actually DO, fine. Otherwise, if you didn't like what he said, roll your eyes, shake your head, and move on. Complaining about what he said will have exactly the same impact on the incidence of rape in the world as his joke has had...exactly none.

Wow, a popular dude makes jokes consistent with mainstream male culture around sex. I'm not surprised but I suppose some pedestals were toppled. I'll still watch his movies because I don't think he's *extraordinarily* bad, just indiscreetly awful, and I'd never watch popular entertainment at all if I thought too hard about what most people are like. That said, I understand some might be pretty traumatised by what he said, and fair enough too.

Okay, I admit this took a while to put up because I kept deleting it and am still partially hoping no one will see it and partially hoping everyone will...

I was drugged and raped when I was 14 years old. It's not something I'm quiet about, because word got out really really fast in my town, and I figured I might as we'll be an advocate if I was going to be outed anyway. So I got linked to the video and you can call me a baby or oversensitive if you want, but I felt like there was a block of ice in my stomach when he did the air quotes around the word rape after he made the joke, because it did feel like he was trivializing the trauma I experienced just because I didn't remember the rape itself. And I was shaking, actually shaking, with a weird combination of rage and I'm not entirely sure what else, because it's been a really fucking long time since I've seen a familiar face (even though I don't actually know Mr. Freeman) saying that what I went through isn't rape. And you can tell me that he was just joking or that I misinterpreted, but that doesn't make me feel any less angry or...afraid, I guess, that nearly everyone here seems to agree with him so if I or another person were in the same situation, our ordeal would be trivialized.

Sorry about all the run-on sentences. I'm just putting in my two cents, for what it's worth. Since I know I'm going to regret this no matter what, I might as well just put this out there.

I think the reason I find it so creepy is that it was just...out of nowhere.

Like, the question is "who do you wanna bang?" Why would you go from that to "Well, I could date rape an elf...".

If he had stopped off at the "elves of both sexes are hot, but I'd need a ladder" it would be mildly amusing.

But like, I kinda imagine it as if I were hanging out with a dude IRL, and talking about actresses that are hot or whatever. If the question is "who would you like to fuck" and they respond "well, I could roofie X", I'M PROBABLY GONNA BE CONCERNED THEIR MINDS WENT IN THAT DIRECTION.
