1) I am amazed that you write that quickly. That is some Mavis Beacon level skills right there.

2) You can't be all things to all people. There is no conceivable way to make everyone that reads your fic happy. Especially on tumblr.

3) You have now removed and freaked out about something you, and apparently a large amount of other people, enjoyed, because ONE PERSON DIDN'T LIKE IT. But guess what? On any given day, there are people that dislike you. And things you do. And things you say. That is just how it is.

That IS lame. Not what you're feeling, that's not lame at all. I would say more people than you think feel the same way, even if they pretend not to, or put on a brave face.

But the fact that you let a feeling like that cause you to delete your fics, probably really disappointing the 99+ readers who loved them? That is lame, and it's letting the mockers win.

That's a bit of an overreaction, dude. If you go around in Internet circles, you're going to come across more and more people who are happy to tear into you - but guess what, you're going to find great people who'll always defend you and are willing to cheer you up. Unless you want to tough it out, I don't know what to tell you, man.

I think that, to the extent that you took stuff down, you reacted too strongly. However, I do understand how you feel, OP. Depending on the nature of the criticism, sometimes it only takes a single person to knock all the life and motivation right out of you.

The thing is, if you are fulfilled by writing, then you've got to keep doing it. Perhaps there's some small gem of concrit buried in that blog post and you can take and absorb and use to get better, but otherwise, you've got to do your best to let it go. That probably seems impossible right now. But as someone else said, you'll never be able to please everyone, and if you get caught up in doing so, then you'll cheat yourself out of doing something that you enjoy. And trust me, it's not a good feeling when you realize you've done that.

I have deleted fics before and regretted it later

so now I try to keep EVERYTHING even if I hate it because I might be able to use it later, or I find out it's not as bad as I thought

buck up, buckaroo. take some time away from that fandom if you need to but do not give up enjoying what you enjoy

also you should keep writing (and posting) just to SPITE THAT ASSHOLE because really how stupid is it that they are THAT ANGRY about a damn fanfiction?! it's ridiculous! and kind of funny! you should just...keep doing things.

I'm sorry OP. It's hard to deal with people ripping apart something you put a lot of work into.

I hope some of these responses aren't making you feel worse. I think you should do what makes you comfortable. If this is enough to make you want to stop sharing your work then you're allowed to do that. But I do agree with some of the others, that it would be good if you could put your fic back up for the sake of the people who enjoy them. You're not obligated to "not let the haters win" though. I know that thought is motivating for a lot of people, but it has always made me feel worse so I thought I'd offer a different point of view in case you're like me.

That ... makes about 3000 words a day, every day.

In all honesty, anon, going by your statistics alone, your fic is probably not all that good. Even if writing is all you do every day, that barely leaves time for plotting and editing. And the first two drafts of everything are shit.

So, be honest, anon. Was your fic as good as it could have been?

Dude, it's not just "a bad review," somebody ripped into one of your fics, apparently behind your back. That's mean, and while deleting all the fic is much more than I would have done, it's not unreasonable for you to feel hurt. You can do what you like with your own fic of course, but I hope you can gain the confidence to continue posting more. It sounds like quite a few people do like it!

Yes, bad reviews suck. Whether they're actual, useful critique, or worthless drivel meant to upset you, it's never fun to read negative words about your work. Especially if you've been spoiled by gushing favorable reviews up until this point.

Yes, quitting everything forevar because of a single bad review is a rather extreme reaction, and you're obviously aware of that. Not sure what to suggest to you though, except that my way to combat the bad review sting is to take bad reviews as a challenge, not a death sentence. You bad-talked my story? Well, that's your opinion, and my opinion is that you need to read more of my story, so here, have five more chapters. :p

I completely empathize with you, OP; been there, not quite done that.

A few things to ponder:

I'm assuming the blog post was just about the writing and therefore not a personal attack. Keep telling yourself that - YOU ARE NOT YOUR WRITING. It is not the net sum of your self worth.

If they were immaturely attacking you personally, well they're assholes, but still anonymous assholes, as you are an anonymous writer. I can only suggest a deep breath and planning a night out with your (hopefully) non-asshole friends to remind you not everyone has shit for brains.

I strongly encourage you to go back and look at the blog post objectively. Was there nothing useful in the criticism? Trying to turn it into a learning experience could at least bring a silver lining of making you into an even better writer.

Finally, the people who told you they like your work *really* liked it and if they liked it, there are plenty of other people who would like it in the future and you're depriving them of that. Remember: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few!

Good luck, OP. Putting yourself out creatively is never easy, but the best rewards come from the greatest risks.

take it personally when someone doesn't like your work, especially since you also got a lot of praise. When you take the fic down, you're saying that you value a negative voice over the readers who liked the work and would probably like to read it again.

It's possible the critic is envious, but even if they sincerely think your fic sucks, they actually spent time ripping into some fan's writing, which is sort of a pathetic use of their time. Don't like, don't read, fuckers!
