Pay off part of my student loans or save it for a downpayment on an apartment when I finally get a job.

I got a decent return, but I ended up spending most of it on my trip to Boston.

It's really my belief that 75% of hobby-based activities, or workplaces, or organizations end up being melodramatic shitstorms.

A friend of mine used to ballroom dance at a particular location, and that ended up being dramatic. Ballroom. Dance. My workplace had drama up the wazoo until they finally fired the instigator.

The thing is, you get a bunch of people in one room with similar, yet different goals, you're going to bring out the madness. Sometimes it's manageable, though you have to nip it in the bud early - other times it's not so easy to control.

Anyone with me on this? It's not that fandoms are batshit. It's that people are batshit no matter where you place them.

So, Ben Okri (author of The Famished Road and its sequels) writes a piece on how he thinks black authors are subjecting themselves to "mental tyranny" by giving in to the expectation that they should write about slavery and oppression.

The awesomest literature, Mr. Okri argues, is not awesome because of what its about, but because of how its written. He thinks black authors should stop limiting themselves to a narrow range of topics.

In rebuttal to the above piece, Sofia Samatar basically says "Okay, but there are plenty of books by black authors that aren't about slavery, you're just not looking hard enough for them."
