Rankin-Bass Awesome Stream!

t’s been awhile since I hosted one of these things! I’m kicking off 2015 with 80’s animated fantasy goodness.

First up, the classic tale of a D&D nerd who gets sucked into Fantasyland and battles wizard!Darth Vader. (I’m not kidding, James Earl Jones is the VA of the main villain.)


Next, one of the most underrated animated films of all time. A kickass unicorn searches the globe for her lost unicorn sisters, wrestling with harpies and demon bulls and romantic feelings along the way. Features the voice talents of both Angela Lansbury and Christopher Lee.


From there, sit back and experience the full plot of Peter Jackson’s 9 hour Hobbit trilogy in less than 90 minutes. That’s right. I went there.


They're pretty short so depending on the time and if anyone is still around after that, I’ll show Rankin-Bass’s Return of the King as well (and if not, at least Where There’s a Whip and Eowyn’s defeat of the Witch King) and Lord of the G-Strings.

Starts at 6pm EST this Saturday!

Hmmmmm. Never seen Flight of Dragons, but I love the other two. The Last Unicorn has a rocking soundtrack.

Aaaah, I love and own all 3 of these. The Flight of Dragons is amazeballs and I will fight anyone who says it isn't.

I never stream because it's usually an inconvenient time for me, but I am gonna try to make it work.

Who To Trust? (Computer Issues)

My mother has been absolutely refusing to get rid of our dinosaur computer despite that we all have fully-functional laptops because she prefers our old printer to the new. So today I set about trying to switch the printer to wireless. I ended up calling HP Tech Support, which I googled for.

So the guy takes over my Macbook (with my permission), takes absolutely forever to try to figure anything out (literally clicking on everything), and then tells me my Mac is infected and I need to have it cleaned out before I can install a driver(?) for the printer. When he said it would cost $150, I noped out of that call as fast as I could. Then I downloaded ClamXav, and it scanned my whole computer and came up with nothing.

My Macbook is working fine; it's about two years old. But I don't know. I think the number I called was legit (and I doublechecked about the program that let him take over my computer, it's definitely legit), but the virus stuff sounds like a scam. He did show me one add-on I had that looked hinky, but I got rid of it as soon as I got off the phone with him.

So, thoughts? Is my computer about to explode or something? Is there any other way I should/could be checking for viruses?

Malware Bytes! Plus whatever free virus software. I'd suggest Avira or Avast.

OMG, the very idea someone taking over my computer makes me anxious.

Macs are known to be virus free. There's one malware that looks like a genuine software update, but no viruses. Or that was the case 2 years ago when I looked it up.

I'd file a complaint against the guy.

When adapting a book/comic/game to a movie, there have to be some changes to accommodate the different media but how much is too much? Basically, if you're a fan, when can you "legitimately" complain without having the "different media" argument thrown back at you?

What adaptions did you think did a good job and why? What are your favorite adaptions and were they "faithful"?

So I've finally caved into my family and upgraded to a smartphone (I must be the only kid whose parents had to harangue her into getting a new smartphone instead of the other way around). It's an Android phone (because I've been using an iPod touch up until now and fuck Apple, seriously).

What are some Android apps you guys like, or might recommend?

I don't play games - and I really don't want to start - but I never really used my iPod for much outside listening to music, reading books, and browsing the Internet while I was away from my computer. I've gotten some apps here and there over the years (mostly educational ones, especially for language learning), but that's about it.

I figure if I finally have to get a smartphone *already misses dumbphone* then I might as well go all the way and see what else I can use it for (i.e. productivity apps, work-out apps, etc.)

What do you guys use?

What's the most awkward movie/book/fandom moment that you've shared with a parent (or with a child, if you've got 'em)?

For me, there have just been so many. Let's go with when I'm, like, 14 or 15 years old, Mom and I both read Clan of the Cave Bear around the same time. I read Valley of Horses first, Mom asks me how it was and I try to talk my way around the fact that it's mostly a bunch of descriptive (if repetitive) sex scenes occasionally interrupted by some arts and crafts or cultural misunderstandings.
