Ever write something and be like "if you motherfuckers don't cry at the line, I have absolutely failed"? And then 2 seconds later wondered if it was too subtle and you needed to point a neon sign at it?

I'm sticking with the subtle approach and just hoping someone comments on it.

Have faith in your readers! Or, if it's, like, really subtle (like idk character A is making a reference to something character B said a long time ago and it's sad in context or w/e), maybe go back and sew in a few more references or hints earlier in the story?

I don't think I've EVER cried while reading something someone else wrote. Then again, I don't tend to usually gravitate towards 'heartstring tugging' type fiction.

So if an author put their stock as a writer in evoking tears from me... sorry?

Since I got a lot of responses yesterday, I thought I'd go a bit broader and ask for more general opinions on constructive criticism and fanfic.

--When do you feel it's okay to leave it?
--What is your response when you get it?
--Do you think it's okay to give it unsolicited?
--Do you do it on or off anon?
--How do you typically phrase or set up your concrit?
--What should you say, if anything, if the concrit is poorly received or ignored?

I usually set it up this way: [Praise what I liked about XYZ][You might want to consider ABC][Reminder that I liked the fic as a whole]

For me it's:

"Adult" as a verb, especially when turned into "adulting." Also when I see adults who have children wearing shirts that say "I can't adult today."

"Muh" anything.

When people write a little stutter at the beginning of their sentence. Like starting with "B-but" instead of just "But." This just looks stupid.

TV Shows

So...I feel like an ass because I only gave it two episodes, but does Stranger Things get really amazing somewhere later in the season or something? Because my friendslist seems to love it and keeps comparing it to things like Silent Hill, but I found the first episodes to be really derivative and boring. The 80s flair is nice and the acting is good, but everything seems extremely formulaic, the characters all seem like archetypes, and it's not scary at all. I wonder if I'm missing something, or if it's simply not my taste.
I started watching Mr Robot recently though, and I really love it. Talk about other shows if you want!

My question: I had gotten the impression that it was kind of a southern thing to call small children sir or ma'am. "NO, sir, get down from there." "Don't eat the bug, please, ma'am." it's this a southern us thing or does everyone do it?

I just moved into a new place and I am suddenly reminded, after living in an apartment that had washers and dryers in the unit, how annoying communal laundry facilities can be. at least try and get your laundry moved through in a timely manner, come on guys!

Anyone else feel like "This ship is ABUSIVE" is the new trendy way to attack rival ships?

I'm starting to see this around tumblr and I dunno if I'm the only one. But it feels like lately that if one wants to slander their rival pairing or NOTP all they have to do is come up with an argument for why said pairing is abusive and bad.

Whether or not the argument has any ground in reality/canon is optional.

At least for tonight, I give up. I have $100,000 I inherited in a 10-year CD at 2%, but it's only a year and change in, and since taxes will likely eat the interest, I mainly put it there to keep it out of the way of my manic spending sprees and my mom's bills. I have no credit to speak of, and at my current half time, lowest on the totem pole job I couldn't afford a mortgage. I'm a year out from finishing my bachelor's, ten years late, and if I can manage that, my chances of promoting to the next job up the ladder, and getting full time within a couple of years, go way up, especially as I plan to work on my master's. But I won't finish my degree if I have to keep caring for my mom, and I can't afford to move out. I need my job. It has benefits and a pension and I barely graduated high school; until I finish my degree, it's the best I can do. But the cheapest condos within public-transit commuting distance of my job and school are $199,000. I have no friends or family to run to, but I have to get away before I kill myself. She refuses to go to a sober living or board and care home; she wants to sell her house and get an apartment, then live off the proceeds. Except she lets her bills go unpaid and would lose her health insurance and all her money practically instantly because of her drinking if she lived on her own. Yeah, I'm selfish, I'm in line to inherit her house. But I'm the reason she still has it; without me, she would have lost it and still may yet. I don't know what to do. I kinda wish I was dead. I also wish she'd get better, but while I'm at it I'd like a friendly dragon and half a billion dollars. My entire life is a panic attack and I wish it was over.
