I am so out of touch with books, how do I know if a book I have is meant for that age range? What are your recommendations?

Unwanted job

Has anyone ever applied for a job that they ended up really not wanting? So, I applied for this thing on Monster. Should have researched more thoroughly first. Turns out the are a relatively knew company and I would be the only attorney on staff as the company owners do other stuff. They are basically looking to expand their company into legal stuff. And they are interested in me enough to offer to fly me out to check it out, but they want me to sign a 2-year contract if they offer me a job.

And the thing is, I'm getting the impression they didn't get many applications. Because I didn't respond to their last email, and a week later they are calling me to offer to fly me out. I'm just so uncomfortable with the whole thing, but given that I need a job desperately and won't have a place to live in a month if I don't have one, my parents are being more gungho about this thing. I wish I hadn't applied for it. But I don't know what to do now. Do I take them up on their ticket offer knowing I don't really want the job. And how do I even say no?

Do you feel uncomfortable around guys in general?

Every once in a while that Margaret Atwood quote comes up on my dash, and it really ticks me off. Seriously, the last thing I worry about when I get dresses is if there is a man inside who wants my hair to look a certain way. And "pretending I have a life of [my] own"? What the hell? It sounds more like she's the one telling me what I think about and feel more than anything. I get that the quote is supposed to represent bigger issues, but I get really ticked when people tell me "this is your life and this is how you feel and this is how everyone feels and thinks" when it's just not the case.

/Sorry. I needed to vent because it popped up on my dash again, and it's been bugging me.

So with all the hoopla around the new Gilmore Girls' mini-series resurgence thingy, it got me wondering if I should go back and watch it. I watched a handful of episodes when it aired (which I enjoyed well enough) but even now I'm terrible at keeping up with active series, doing better binge-watching completed things.

Is it worth it? Should I? Is there anything that ever made you go back and binge an old off-air show?

Are you a "buy a few groceries frequently" type person or a "get everything at once" type person?

I'm the latter cause I can't drive and the closest store is kinda not close so its a much bigger deal for me to go in general, but I notice most other people my age go like, once a week if not more than that, which seems silly to me.

So I have this coworker. He's a good looking guy, but I have a boyfriend so I've never paid too much attention to him. But my best friend came to my work the other day, met him, has been drooling over him ever since, and wants me to set them up.

The thing is...I'm pretty sure he's gay. I know he's not in a relationship currently, and he's never specificially said the words "I'm gay" to me but he's only mentioned male exes and has commented on guys he thought were hot. When I told my friend about this, she said I was being biphobic and that unless he's specifically said he only likes guys, it's wrong of me to assume he's gay.

Is she being a ridiculous person who spends too much time on Tumblr like I initially thought, or am I biphobic and awful?

Just a few things I've noticed:

1. "Inspired by #..." thread titles don't get a lot of hits, because nobody gives enough of a fuck to go back up and remind themselves what #x was. Make your title "Favorite character/headcanon/shortlived series" and then put an "inspired by in the body.

2. If you're an anon posting a link, give the link it's own line for easier copying.

3. DESCRIBE YOUR LINKS. Don't just drop something, ask us to look at it, and not give us an idea of what to expect.

So I have mixed feelings about this book.

First of all, I didn't read all the short stories. I know, I know. It took me a long time to get the book (I ordered it online, and it took a really long time to ship) and I've had a complicated past few months. It was also longer and a bit sloggier than the books we've read for the last few months, which I was able to easily finish in a week each. I DO intend to read all of it, but probably slowly - one or two short stories at a time. That said, please don't worry about spoiling me for the later stories! I don't mind.

Short stories can be cool, but it's difficult for me to stay motivated to read a whole bunch of them since there's not much overarching plot. (There's a bit of a plot kind of like a serial cartoon or newspaper comic but most every story stands on its own without requiring any of the others to read and understand it except the ones that intro the main characters.)

The first few stories did not appeal to me. The writing isn't bad but it's heavy and sloggy to me. I recognize that is it a product of its time. I can get through that, but the really annoying part, at least at first, was Para Handy's accent. (I'm used to Para's accent now and Sunny Jim's accent is worse!) I don't mind accents in concept, but writing them out phoenetically can make them hard to understand and makes it take longer to read and takes away focus from the story, to me.

I also disliked the apparent attitude towards women in the first dozen or two stories. Also probably a product of its time, yes. Still didn't like it. The only women featured are romantic interests of the main characters or one-shot characters who are defined specifically as some other man's wife or daughter. Dougie's wife was particularly portrayed to be an annoying nag, which seems to be an accepted view of women in the context of the story. Even Para's wife is portrayed as basically mentally unstable (because she's a vegetarian) the first appearance she makes post-marriage.

All that aside, I did start to enjoy the stories as I kept reading them. They grew on me, and the quirks of the crew members of the Vital Spark grew on me and made me like the characters individually quite a bit - even cranky Macphail. Sailor stories aren't generally my area of interest, but there were nonetheless a few I really liked - the one where the whale washed up on the island was pretty entertaining, and the one with the farm sale.

I don't know much about Scotland but it would be very interesting to compare the late-Industrial-Age Scotland portrayed in the stories to the Scotland of today if there are people who are familiar with it! Also I've heard that Scotland is very pretty and it's fun to imagine the Vital Spark sailing along the scenic coast. (I feel like it would be cold a lot though.)

For those who have read or plan to read all the stories if you haven't yet, I'd love to discuss them later on as I read them all!

(PS: the August book is available in my library - first book of the year I can get that way lol - so I will have no problem getting it early and it shouldn't be an issue to read it all)

(PPS: I'm not sure I read the edition the reccer wanted us to read. I attempted to order that edition, but the book I got had a different cover than the one I thought I ordered. I hope it's the same one.)
