Odd things that are normal

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Do you ever take a step back from society and think, wow, it's actually kind of weird that we always do that? Something that is considered socially normal. Doesn't have to be unethical, or negative, just odd that it's something we value because there doesn't seem to be a good logical reason for it.

Like, wedding dresses. Why do we value spending a thousand dollars on a dress we will literally only wear once? I mean, you want to look nice on the day, but after that, the dress is useless. No, that expensive dress probably won't be an "heirloom", your daughter is going to want her own $1000 dress, not wear yours.

Also, mowing lawns. Why does grass need to look manicured? Unless you're actually intending to play on the grass, I suppose, but long, natural grass is lovely. It's kind of strange that we value snipping every blade of grass in sight.

Circumcision. I am still so confused why that is a thing or how it became a thing. Religious purposes for some but WHY that? Especially considering how patriarchal the past was, why would they do something so harmful and dangerous to baby boys?

Yeah! It's fucked up

Like my girlfriend, she like really, really values screwing on the bed. I'm like "why not floor? Floor is easily cleaned, I can mop it" and she's like "but it's WEIRD to always fuck ON THE FLOOR" and I'm like "woman you are lucky I'm not being super practical and saying sex is a backyard thing then we can compost"

Pretty much anything. The current system of neo-liberal capitalism seems incredibly fucked up and unnatural to me.

Like the whole system where we put kids in the care of someone else because the parents/grandparents are out working. Or that we put old people in retirement homes. It seems nuts.

Also the whole concept of bullshit jobs - i.e. jobs that contribute nothing to society than to keep the own company running...but have no no inherent values like say teching, food production, healthcare etc.

Every thing that has to do with adverting just baffles me (and more so since I don't have a TV).

Starbucks and it's clones, i.e. incredibly overpriced drinkstthat are popular by virtue of name.

etc etc

Oh and get this

My girlfriend really, really values buying food at the store. I'm like "but outside is full of animals and plants" but she's like "no, store." My yard is full of plants especially since we realized society values mowing for no reason so we won't mow our lawn anymore and I've seen like five mammals just today

Why don't we eat cats? It's stupid that we don't eat cats. Cats have a lot of meat on them

I actually did wear my mother's wedding dress. It even fit without altering. So, it happens.

Re: Odd things that are normal

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Wedding dresses didn't used to be a thing for most people in the western world. Women got married in their "Sunday best." Somewhere along the way, they arose as a form of conspicuous consumption and that created a business to feed the market and it turned into a feedback loop.

Awards shows. I don't understand why we as a society are supposed to think the Oscars mean anything. They voter base is super limited to largely elderly white dudes & projects campaign for Oscars by sending the voter base crazy extravagant gifts as a means of saying "Pick me, pick me!"

Also funerals & baptisms. I don't understand why funerals are treated as sad, somber occasions where you have to wear black. (Caveat: Unless the deceased is incredibly young and the death was unexpected. I get that.) Overall though, funerals are supposed to be a celebration of a life lived. I personally would prefer it if everyone wore their own favorite color to my funeral & remembered me as I lived- ridiculously and with lots of laughter. And with baptisms...what kind of fucked up Christian mythology tells parents that if their newborn baby dies in infacy before you've doused their head with holy water, committing them to a religion they can't actually consent to, that their soul will rest in Purgatory. I mean, that's really fucked, honestly.

So, my great-aunt died

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-09-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she actually died in Saturday, but I only found out today, right before leaving for work, so that was fun.

We were pretty close (more so than with my real aunt), though I hadn't seen her for almost 2 years as she lived abroad.

I'm sort of cross with my mom as she apparently knew her health was declining, and I'd been urging her on to visit for about a year now. Honestly if I'd known, I'd probably have taken out some savings and traveled alone.

I feel sad I didn't get to say goodbye.

She was old and died in her sleep - but like, it's one less person I have in the world.

I have filled so many kink meme prompts but I have yet to ever have one of mine filled.

There is no justice in this world.

Showers

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
As in wedding and baby. I've never heard of anyone actually liking them. It seems to me that if nothing else, they're more for the mothers/in law and female family members... so why not just take your mother, mother-in-law and sister out to lunch instead of forcing your friends to sit with people they don't know while you're huddled with them in the kitchen?

Flight Rising - New Breed!!!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
So glad I brewed a bunch of "useless" sulfurs. I have my breed change scroll cooking, so excited to give it to one of my RTB G1s and hopefully make some money. I hope they retain value for awhile, since they are high level Baldwin-exclusive!
