Okay but in all honesty, I get what you're saying. Kind of. I'm not American, either, and a lot of discussion in SJ circles of fandom (which, by the way, do not actually take over all of fandom - you don't have to participate in the discussion of those issues to be in fandom, there are plenty of places where they're not the main focus) seems very focused on American viewpoints.

At the same time, a lot of non-Americans like to claim that everything SJers are discussing is an American-only issue and these things just aren't the same in other countries omg just calm down. For example, I've seen tons of people excuse the word 'cunt' just because it's used very frequently in England. Or something. Somehow that supposedly means it's no longer sexist, which is really fucking ridiculous because it's not like bitch is magically not sexist just because it's commonly used.

Anyway, my point here - yes, the American-centric viewpoint is a problem in SJ discussions, but at the same time a lot of people use the fact that many SJ discussions are American-centric to completely dismiss all the legitimate points that are made in them.

Cunt isn't used the same way over here as it is in the USA, though. Hell, where I live it isn't unusual to call your closest friends cunts. On the other hand, Americans seem to treat it like the worst word ever, and usually ina very different way.

People call their closest friends bitches, too, that doesn't make it any less of a sexist term. It's used in an insulting-term-of-endearment way. They're using it because it's an insult, and it's an insult because it's a comparison to something female (in the case of bitch, a female dog - in the case of cunt, female genetalia).

It's not only not used in the same way, it doesn't even have the same meaning. It isn't sexist and it isn't used to be sexist. The biggest problem with SJWs in fandom is that most are Americans and you ascribe *your* personal or cultural meanings to *us* because while you frequently go on and on and fucking on about acceptance and understanding, you don't mean any of it. You mean you want the rest of the world to fall in line with whatever is the trendy American issue of the day. So when you say it's sexist or complain about us using it, try to remember that not everyone lives where you do and the cultural meanings and usages are not the same.

And policing-anon is probably genuinely clueless about this* but 'cunt' being a pretty normal word is more common in dialects that are low-prestige, and not that Americans have any sensitivity about UK class dynamics, but because of that the pearl-clutching and denigrating people who say it's more a 'normal word' than a 'harshly misogynistic word' is kind of... :/

I'm in England too and in my experience it's common and the level of offence is determined by the tone and the context. It's not as offensive as it would be in the US where they get fits of the vapours at even the mildest swearing. Cunt is very, very common in parts of Scotland and, again, tone and context determine the level of offence.

That's not the problem: swearing, including heavy swearing, is pretty common among young people and certain subcultures. The problem is that c*** (see, I'm even censoring it!) has a radically different connotation in the U.S. It's just about the worst thing you can ever call a woman here.

No, I just can't live my life if I get all wrapped up about what someone on the internet thinks I should care about. I have a family to take care of and a career I love. Through those things I do all I can to eradicate social injustice and end poverty and war. My job directly impacts homeless people and helps to provide them with their own shelter. It's more of an impact than I've seen from anyone ranting on the internet that people *should* do something about an issue because the ranter wants them to.
