I like reading them, but I often find myself going "we're getting half a story." It's often pretty obvious.

Also, sometimes the comments make me facepalm, because they'll project their personal feelings onto the person asking for advice. Like someone whose parents dropped in on them unannounced and stayed the night their first night away from home; I was on the girl's side, but people in the comments were saying she was an ungrateful brat. WTF?

I love reading them. I like Ask A Manager for work-related stuff, Dear Prudence, Dear Abby, and Ask Amy for general stuff. I don't comment or send in my own letters asking for advice, I just enjoy reading the problems and responses (and comments, sometimes). Very entertaining for me.

I love reading Dear Abby and Ask Amy and I end up discussing them with my mom every day and debating on how we would answer the letters.

Any time the subject of advice columns comes up I'm suddenly mildly annoyed all over again about a Dear Abby answer I read probably at least fifteen years ago. The letter-writer's parents had planned for years that they were going to throw a huge, big-deal party for some milestone birthday of the dad's, but he died suddenly a short time (like, a few months to a year or so; I don't remember exactly) before said birthday. Mom was still planning to have the party as a memorial/celebration of his life, and the letter-writer was acting like this was the most messed-up thing ever. There was no implication in the letter that Mom was having other grief-related problems or that the party would be a financial hardship, but to the writer it was proof that she had lost her mind. And Abby's response was "Yeah, this is a huge problem and your mom needs professional help because she's not coping with your dad's death." It's the closest I've ever come to writing a letter myself because where are you even getting this answer.

So, it seems I became friends with an 18-year-old. I'm 35. Logically, I wouldn't even think I'd get on with someone that young, but lo and behold, I do. He's very smart and talks about interesting stuff. Yeah, he is a bit immature on some levels, but not to the level it would bother me. Lord only knows why he likes me, I didn't know I was cool with the young ones (he might think I'm younger than I am, but still). Anyway...is this weird? Ant caveats? I'm just sort of going with the flow here.

Introversion

The definition or "introversion," from an online dictionary:

"the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one's own mental life"

In other words, people who make dumb memes, the definition is NOT "hates all social interaction and wants to spend all of one's time at home, wrapped in blankets watching TV."

(Seriously, where did the blanket stereotype come from anyway? Is introversion supposed to make people cold?)

Cosplay thread: seeking advice

Mine is a bit long and might be a shot in the dark but I know there are people who are good at cosplay who might like to help.

Thinkng about revamping my Vriska Serket costume for Gen Con. Not sure though bc the con is in two and a half weeks and life has been crazy so it's been on the back burner. Seeking advice from experienced cosplayers, especially those familiar with Homestuck trolls. It is the pre-Sgrub Vriska with one eye and one arm.

What I have:
+Jeans (ofc)
+Shoes
+T-shirt
+Wig
+Makeup
+Glasses
+Jacket min

What I need:
+New horns: mine are shitty-looking and kind of falling apart anyway. I made them out of Model Magic. Open to trying new materials. The old ones are affixed to a black headband (which I can probably reuse) with super glue. Suggestions on materials/procedures? Any good tutorials?
+Pantyhose arm: I've never used one but it would add to accuracy and help me stay warm. I don't know if people are still selling these and if they are expensive. If not selling any good tutorials? I have basically zero sewing experience but can probably use a friend's sewing machine. Some questions: if I cut off and don'tml make the left hand (which I don't need) will that mess up the material? Would it mess it up to put fake nails on the right hand?
+Metal arm: again, mine is old. Many things I can make it out of. Prefer not expensive or extremely labor intensive, and I'm partial to duct tape (personal quirk, also I made my first arm out of it and it turned out pretty well). Can I use the pantyhose base to make it? I want to do the hand separately and will probably either make it on or fit it over a plain gray glove which has also worked in the past. Interested in metallic decorations or even sheet metal paneling and maybe silver or gray paint or spray paint. Suggestions?

Thanks to anyone who can offer any advice! I have access to a few major craft store chains. My budget isn't enormous but I can spend a bit.

I really miss Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert isn't quite as exciting as he was as his character, nor do his segments feel quite as meaningful as Jon's did.

John Oliver is absolutely amazing, imo, the funniest by far.

I'm kind of undecided about Samantha Bee. Her show seems to have a lot of energy, but I am turned off by her style of speaking - she's at her best when she's really ripping into something/someone but sometimes I think she borders on just being cruel (like a segment bashing a child).

Conan remains the absolute worst. Nothing remotely funny or clever about him.

But then they immediately whine about ads. And turn them off or get an addon to block them.

If you want your website to survive, it needs to make money.
