Have you ever been completely surprised by someone's political stances? Celebrities, entertainers, friends and family, fandom people, anybody you know.

Pretty much any time someone they're anti-vax I just... boggle. Especially if they also believe in homeopathy which is "Since vaccines work for viruses, what if we applied that to everything?! Tiny dose of smallpox keeps you from getting smallpox, tiny dose of caffeine helps you sleep. Logics!"

Yes. Family members whose views are generally libertarian who supported Trump. Like, really? Trump is for more government control, just government control in the wrong areas, IMHO. He was not a libertarian candidate and still is not a libertarian president.

And also, some people I know who, while very conservative, I thought had a line when it came to things like racism and sexism. And yet, they talked about Trump's comments about women and how they debated whether or not to vote for him after that. No idea who they voted for. But either way, I would have though it would have been a clear choice for them after hearing those comments.

Finding out one of my brother would have voted for Trump. We come from a fairly liberal family. And I say 'would have' because he didn't actually end up voting for Trump because he got too drunk to drive to the polling station. His only reasoning was that Hillary voted for the Iraq war. That's it.

I was very depressed when an internationally renowned astronomer went public with his defacto admission that he didn't know what a planet was and then proceeded to use his fame to leverage his political views. Trump would have stopped that happening. That is why I voted Trump.

When I was a young kid, still in Russia in the 90s, my aunt was very cool and young and hip. She was the sort of person who would go to gay rights protests and environmental marches and things, and she was very outspoken against bigotry. We were very close, but eventually after I moved here we fell out of touch.

We reconnected a few years ago, and now she is a very religious and close-minded person. Like, she is afraid of other races, and afraid of her children being around gay people, and things like this.

It was very shocking tbh.

The only time I've ever had a weird thought that it really didn't fit with what I knew about someone... he later did a complete 180 on political affiliation, religious beliefs, LGBTQI stuff.

On the other hand I've been completely unsurprised by another friend who managed to surprise everyone else. He comes from money, of course he voted for Turnbull.

Is there a topic you don't bring up on fs because of how controversial your opinion is?

Anyone good with computer stuff? Google is failing me

I legit had Microsoft Office from a free download that my university gave out (it's been a few years since I graduated). Lately, it's been acting funny, like getting stuck on the loading screen and not loading even after restarts. Prompted me to upgrade for free to Microsoft Office 2016, while simultaneously randomly telling my subscription had expired (inconsistently, sometimes it worked, sometimes now). After the latest bout of not loading, I tried to "repair online" through my Programs in my Control Panel. Well, unsurprisingly, it was stuck on a loop and didn't progress even after leaving it run all night. I finally forced restart.

Which was evidently the stupidest thing I could've ever done, because now Microsoft Office is completely gone from my computer. Like, it no longer shows up in my programs. I tried to connect to the Microsoft Office people (probably should've done that to start with) but they couldn't find it on my computer and just tried to sell it to me again. Like, I legitimately did have it! I can't afford to buy it!

Is there any way to recover a program that I had on my computer 24 hours ago that got wiped after I restarted on a frozen repair? Or alternatively, cheap ways to get Microsoft Office... I need it for professional reasons. :-/

(Until recently, I was under the impression most people didn't take them seriously and Infowars and its ilk were seen as something of a joke.)

My dilemma:

My boss suggested today that I take a vacation next week. I don't want to next week for various reasons (mainly being that it's my birthday and I'm planning on celebrating on the weekend and I like my vacations to be 'chill out in my pajamas watching TV and not leaving the house if I don't want to' time and getting dressed up and going out doesn't exactly fit into that). But I also know that I'm a weirdo and if I end up staying home on my birthday with no plans, I'm going to be all depressed and feel like no one cares, despite it being my decision not to do anything (yes, I realize that sounds insane).

But the week after, they're doing construction in my area and one of the main things I love about vacation is being able to sleep in every day, and I'm not going to be able to with the construction noise.

But the week after THAT, the person who does my job when I'm not there is having surgery, so I can't be out.

So that takes me to the next week, which is almost a month away and I'm not sure I want to wait that long because I desperately need a break.

This is really dumb but I don't know what to do. Thoughts?

Not entirely sure how to feel

I ran a fandom tumblr for several years, usually 2+ reblogged posts a day, decent follower count, but I was getting tired of sifting through the tags for fanart and it was becoming more work than fun. So I just... stopped.

And on one hand it's a relief. I was putting a lot of time and effort into it and all I was getting out of it was fandom opinion tainting my enjoyment of the source material.

On the other I've not updated in over a month and not a single person's attempted to contact me to see what's up. It's easier this way, I didn't want some big dramatic thing, but I was kind of hoping at least a couple people would wonder why I stopped. Probably it's just a sign I shouldn't have pushed myself to keep going as long as I did.
