Family and how to behave around them

I have a big family thing in a couple of months, where I’ll be seeing quite a lot of aunts, uncles and cousins for the first time in years (we’ve kept superficially in touch, but haven’t actually been in a room together and had to interact since I was in my teens). I never had an especially close relationship with them as a kid, but we got along well enough and I do like them. We just don’t know each other all that well, and I’ve always felt they don’t really understand me (especially as a teen, not that that’s a surprise) - we just have different expectations of life, and they seem to be sort of puzzled that I’m not halfway on my way to marriage and kids and moving to the suburbs by now. Which is just not what I want right now – I’m in my mid-twenties and I’d honestly rather focus on my education and geek out about that, and while I’d like some romantic company, marriage and kids are definitely optional, not required in my life (and last I saw them I wasn’t sure they’d ever even be an option in the first place).

So yeah, to get back to the point… this family thing. For some reason, I am getting really, really antsy about the upcoming family gathering. I thought I’d moved past being too bothered by the whole thing (and I’ll admit that my teen self was really pissy about the expectation of following some societally prescribed course, and no less understanding of their desire to do so). Especially because their questions and comments were always well-intentioned, if frustratingly narrow-minded about anything the tiniest bit alternative. I am sorely tempted to go out and find a fabulous over-the-top outfit, lose ten pounds, go all out and just generally try to radiate “I am fabulous and don’t give a shit about your opinion”, except the very fact that I want to show off kind of shows I apparently do give a shit. And I have no idea why I do, it’s not like I have any emotional baggage about the lack of understanding between us.

Sorry about the TL;DR, but any advice about what to do? Do I find that outfit and go all out, or try to tamp down on my weird urge to show off?

How often do you exercise?

My mum seems to think that if I don't exercise every single day, I'm slacking off. She keeps insisting that I need it, that the whole family needs it. I go for an hour-long work out every other day, and I've always thought that was good enough, especially since I eat really healthy food.

I guess I wanted to see if I really *am* slacking compared to the average person.

Friendships changing

I think I’m drifting away from one of my best friends. A lot of big changes have been happening lately, especially in her life, and I don’t know… it’s just suddenly hit me that we both seem to need each other less than before, and I have no idea what to do with that. She used to be the person who knew me the best, the one person I knew I could turn to day or night with anything big or small, but lately there’s a weird sense of awkwardness and a couple of times one of us has said something that just makes it clear that we don’t know each other quite as well as before (usually her, but I could be saying lots of stuff that’s weird to her and just not know it). She still matters a lot to me, and I want her in my life. She’s still being a really good friend to me, and I of course strive to be the best friend I can to her, in spite of the awkwardness. I get that people and relationships change, and I’m open to our friendship developing and us maybe not being as close as before (as much as it would pain me), but I’m really scared that I’ll lose her completely.

Have you had any friendships like this, f!s, and what did you do to make sure you didn’t lose the friendship entirely when it changed?
