Big four Hogwarts AU

So a few weeks back this board introduced me to the concept of the Bog Four Hogwarts AU (Rapunzel, Hiccup, Merida, and Jack Frost attending Hogwarts and all getting sorted into different houses) and it actually started my mind working somewhat. I had a very rough storyline idea merging all of the continuities as much as possible into a modern day Hogwarts and determining why the characters ended up there (Jack is "undercover" because Pitch has been making moves, Mother Gothel is letting Rapunzel go so that she doesn't look suspicious and to live vicariously through her daughter, since her parents never let her attend, Hiccup is the latest of a semi-magical line that considers themselves the only thing keeping the world from being overrun by dragons, etc.)

Then I made the mistake of looking up some fanwork. Admittedly I only looked at one, but I took some issues. With their sorting. I'm not sure I'd have sorted them all into different houses. I don't do a lot of fantasy Hogwarts sorting, considering that Gryffindor is basically a house for story protagonists.

Jack: I just don't see how anyone can watch Rise of the Guardians and put Jack Frost in Slytherin. He repeatedly turns down power, first from his appointment as a Guardian and then from Pitch. The entire movie is Jack's quest for knowledge: about who he is, what his purpose is, why he's the way he is. This would make him a pretty good fit for Ravenclaw, except for one thing. When he finds out what his purpose is, it's to literally laugh in the face of danger. Courage is his entire reason for being, how in the hell is he not a Gryffindor?

Merida is much more if a Slytherin, I think. After all, she was so desperate to retain her power that she resorted to poisoning her own mother, and it only seemed to upset her after she found out it wasn't changing her mother's mind. And sure, her movie is actually called "Brave," but she didn't look exceptionally brave in it.

Hiccup I could see in any house, really. He was brave, but really only in a group. He had the ability to work very hard, he demonstrated a remarkable capacity for learning with the dragons, and he pretty much stated outright that he was doing it for status. Ultimately I'd probably put him in Hufflepuff, considering that his greatest strength appears to be his ability to unite people with him.

And Rapunzel was very smart, and very hard working, but she definitely showed a whole lot of courage with the way she approached every new experience throughout Tangled. She was surrounded by new and unfamiliar territory, and she didn't back down for an instant or display the slightest hint of fear. Ultimately, though, her mother really did a number on her, and I can totally see her insisting to the Sorting Hat that she is not brave in the slightest.

But, anyways, those are my thoughts. I thought I might share them here, since this is the site that introduced me to the concept.

I caught up with the anime (an episode per week is something I don't have the patience to handle, so I waited a few weeks and marathoned what I missed)... then, distraught again, I decided to read all the manga.

Vacations!

I just got back from my week long vacation back home. Drove straight through from SC to OK (20 hour drive).

The trip was equal parts miserable and wonderful! I loved seeing my family (especially my nieces and new nephew). The accommodations left a lot to be desired and South Carolina was at like 80% humidity the entire time. :X But my oldest sister made us some wonderful meals (with vegetables from her garden). Not my favorite vacation (that was the mountains) and not my worst (week long camping trip).

Since summer is wrapping up, tell me about some of your vacations F!S!!!

Not necessarily films that conform to the letter and spirit of their respective original sources, just anything that was based on something else and turned out to be good, either because it adds something new to the canon, interprets it in a different way, or changes every possible aspect altogether.

"When the contest began the 34 chapters of PVA chose one person who was required to write a 300 word essay and submit it to the Washington D.C. office. From those essays six finalists were chosen. The next phase was letting the public vote and narrow the field to three.

I elected to take the full size van since i cannot do a car or truck/suv anymore due to assorted injuries from decades of participation in wheelchair sports on the local, state, regional and national level.

If you read the essay under my voting picture you already know this. Add to that 44 years of disability and the battering my body has taken to try and ignore that and lead a full active life. I worked hard to achieve a high level of proficiency in art, academics and athletics. It's not in my nature to accept any less.

I feel very humble right now knowing that the finest friends anyone could ask for took time out to work this difficult contest. You are the reason that for the first time in my life I will own a brand new vehicle set up just for me. I can't thank you enough. Drop by and lets go for a spin.

I am glad it finished early. I had planned to release the Kraken about 10 o'clock to get the word out one last time.

You have earned enough good karma last forever. I owe you a debt of gratitude that i can never fully repay.

Thank you seems hopelessly inadequate so I will end with endless good vibes going out to you. Now the adventure begins. The road goes ever on...and I'm going to drive over it in style.

I'm living in a coed building for the summer, so for the first time in my life, I'm sharing a communal bathroom with the opposite sex. Occasionally I'll be in one stall and the really creepy guy next door will come into the other one. Then he does something that utterly baffles me. He usually lets out a small fart, then he just exhales loudly a few times and leaves. I can't figure out what the hell he's doing. Is this something that can easily be explained by someone familiar with male bathroom habits, or is it just some weird ritual he has?

Not Secret: Despite numerous therapy sessions and being in my late twenties, I walk with a distinct limp and have to sometimes use a cane to get around. I'm still fit and active, though, and try not to be embarrassed about it.

Secret: I can't begin to explain how bitter I felt when the newer adaptations did away with Watson's cane. I get that it's not practical and they were trying to give the characters a new spin but it just makes me feel like they don't want Watson to have any physical limits because "of course" he wouldn't be able to keep up with Holmes if he did.

Just because he - who am I kidding? - we have our limits, it doesn't mean we can't keep up with you.

Bonus Secret: I didn't always use a cane but to get through the pain of having it now, I sometimes pretend to be Watson out on my way to see Holmes. It makes it easier.
