4th of July Impromtu Stream

I volunteered to watch two dogs who are scared of fireworks this weekend, so I'm doing approximately nothing tomorrow. Since I'd probably be watching these by myself tomorrow anyways, I figured I'd host a stream for them incase anyone is interested.

First up, 1776! The one and only musical about the Declaration of Independence and the founding of AMURICA.



I have no idea why those two are on the cover because the true star of the film is the indomitable, immortal William Daniels Mr. Feeney. (Forever experience the in-joke of Corey and friends attending John Adams High.)



Then comes the quintessential American tale of a WWII soldier who discovers intel on an unguarded bank full of German gold. The only problem? It's 15 miles behind enemy lines. Watch them win the war for queen and country a better paycheck. Probably the only movie to feature tank hippies.

I'm free all day, so I'm willing to take suggestions on starting times if anyone does happen to be interested. Note that this is completely unrelated to Noodle's stream which I assume is happening at 6pm EDT on Saturday as normal.

Uncle Sam and the Fourth of July

Yeah, I posted this last year, but I figure there's gonna be a lot of people who hadn't seen it, so here goes.

Since tomorrow is July 4th, and reading this comic is one of my two July 4th traditions, I am compelled to post the amazing Uncle sSam mini, penned by Steve Darnall and gorgeously illustrated by Alex Ross, who I'm not entirely unconvinced is an IRL Pickman, just with superheroes instead of monsters.

I used to really look forward to July 4th. I liked going to see the family and eating hot dogs and whatnot, and my uncle always threw big to-dos in the 80s, my cousin doing the same thing in the 00s. And I was real big on the patriotism thing for a few years after 9/11. But somewhere along the line, I don't know where (probably towards the end of the Bush years, feels like) July 4th, to me, has lost its original meaning -- a celebration of America -- and has taken on a more somber one, a time of reflection, to examine where we've succeeded, where we've screwed up, and how we can do better. The Uncle Sam comic is largely about the exact same thing. It starts off dire, a direct indictment of all the fuckups this country has made; but the 2nd issue is all about overcoming our past and working towards a better future. So yes, I always get depressed at this time of year -- I love this country, and our long history of mistakes break my fucking heart -- but I do my damnedest to be optimistic, because I firmly believe that we can always do better.

So, without further ado, I present to you: UNCLE SAM #1 and #2. This is a tale of despair, and redemption; it went to print in 1997, and is still eerily relevant today. Enjoy!

Warning: given the subject matter this comic touches on, there is going to be brief, one-panel depictions of rape (well, the implication thereof anyway, it's Vertigo, not Top Cow or whatever), racism, homophobia, and lots of other bad things, mostly in the first issue, as well as a passage where Sam gets a telling-off by a very pissed off antique picaninny toy about the history of racism in America.

So, I am anon from yesterday whose mom guilted me into helping her pay for plane tickets ($500). I now got a bill from my doctor for $200. Apparently even though the facility is in network, the one doctor I was scheduled with was not. that would have been useful info they should post somewhere. So all my saved up is now gone.

So, two of my friends got magnetic implants today.

How it's supposed to work, or so they say, is you basically get an implant in one of the fingers of your non-dominant hand. The point is to develop a sort of "sixth sense" for magnetic fields and the like.

I find it fascinating.

I'm going to see if it works for them (I'm chicken like that) but depending on price and result...yeah, I might actually consider it.

I'd just be worried if I'd ever need an MRI or something...but man, the idea is just so cool to me.

So. The Facebook "all ur emotion are belong to us" experiment. Discuss!

For those who hadn't heard, apparently some bright sparkplug at Failbook decided that they were going to test how people responded to differing types of newsfeeds, negative or positive. The findings were that people posted more negative status updates after the positive items in their newsfeeds were reduced, and they posted more positive status updates when the negative items in their newsfeeds were reduced.

Me, I've never had a Failbook account, and the more I read about the skeevy stuff going on behind-the-scenes, I am so, so, so, so, glad that I never did get one. Even though my friends and family never ever check their email anymore, and the only way to find out what is going on in the family is to phone up one of the cousins who has the dread thing on their phone 24/7.

Are you on Facebook, FS? Did you notice something was up with your newsfeeds when the experiment was happening? If you didn't, how do you feel about Failbook's techs unnaturally manipulating your emotions?

Actually, my username is not a riff on snow leopards (though I do adore them). It's all to do with this toy cheetah that I used to play with as a kid, but only when it was snowy outside!

I am pretty sure I came up with the "ice cheetah" before hearing of snow leopards.

Pop-Rock sugar cookies

Tonight, I'm making Pop-ROck sugar cookies to take to work tomorrow. I have to make from scratch, since my store seems to think it only needs worry itself with chocolate chip cookie dough, and I have a question.

Since pop-rocks are sweet, and the tutorials I've seen have pretty much said they need sit atop icing if I still want them to pop when people eat the cookie, I thought I would reduce the sugar in the cookie recipe. Mainly because "sweet" isn't a flavor I enjoy terribly (I like sweet things, but if the dominant characteristic is simply "sweet" I'm not happy.)

But I know baking is like the science wing of cookery. Too much or too little baking soda or powder or the wrong amount or type of flour can wreck your recipe, but is the same true of sugar? Will I be killing my cookies if I cut the sugar by, like, a third or a fourth?

Help me I'm preoccupied with trying to figure out if a fictional character would find me attractive
