I'm trying to fix my sleep schedule and not ragequit this tax prep course which has been awful and shitty and I've been generally miserable. The only thing making the past month worth it has been Mystery Skulls's new album and replaying some of my old favourite Aliens games.

I have so much school work I need to be doing - books to be read, research to do, papers to write... and I decided it was a great time to replay the Dragon Age series before the next game comes out. I just beat Dragon Age Origins again yesterday (and did like, every possible side quest) and now I'm on Awakening. After that, 2, and then I'm ready for Inquisition!

...I feel so accomplished, but that's the exact opposite of what I should be feeling.

What are you doing that's definitely not what you're supposed to be doing?

Representation of Black People in Hollywood Films

So here's something I don't get: how are black people lacking representation in film? The BBC reports that "black actors were cast in 14.1% of roles " and for female characters, "73% of all female characters were Caucasian, followed by African American (14%), Latina (5%), Asian (3%), other worldly (3%), and other (2%)."

Yet the US Census reports that only 12.6% of the US population is African American.

So from a US-persepctive (since we're talking about Hollywood) how are black people underrepresented? I can understand if there's a film set in Africa where it's been white-washed or cultural appropriation why people might be upset, but, if anything, it seems like black people are slightly OVER-represented.

I ask because I'm an Arab woman who recently was told to basically sit down and shut up for challenging a black woman on the issue of racism in media. And I think it's a bit unfair given that I'm basically given no representation (can anyone name a famous Arab actress on the level of the many black actresses).

I don't know…am I wrong here? I get that Arab women are a much smaller proportion of the population in the US but I'm a little tired of being told that my experiences "don't compare" to that of black women and that I'm not allowed to have an opinion. Especially when it seems like they're so much better off representation-wise than I am..

Now, I fully admit that whites have it best. But white people aren't the ones telling me I'm in the wrong here. They'll usually agree with me that the representation of Arabs is terrible and that Arab women are basically invisible.

Excellent piece of activism that has been hijacked to talk about #notallmen because exploring the fact that not all cultures are guilty at the same rate. The people who did the video have even been forced to back down and make up clear excuses for the demographics in the video.
