I don't know if Ghostbusters was/is a flop but I continue to be amazed at how much wank it generates.

I'm doing pretty good. I don't know if Ghostbusters was a flop but it's a great movie. I know nothing about Snape stuff or how you feel about him. I cannot predict what the future has in store this workday. :)

Leslie Jones was just hacked in a really nasty way. The Ghostbusters hate is so unreasonable, and she's been getting such a shitty deal out of it.

Also, no, you will not leave work at a reasonable hour. :)

I actually just went to see Ghostbusters today. While it's not a cinematic masterpiece, it's FUN. I laughed out loud several times and so did a few other people. Like, I'm starting to see the point of people calling it sexism - it shouldnt have flopped nearly as much as it did.

As for the work, can you sneak out?

Today I was HOOOOOT. I think the movies was the only place I wasn't sweating profusely.

My foot seems to be on the mend finally! I'm off the crutches and I'm driving again. Don't think I'm ready for a grocery trip, but I could probably get snacks at the gas station if I needed to.

And the new Deus Ex is fantastic, if totally not subtle with its racism allegories.

Sadly box-office wise Ghostbusters was totally a flop. 200m on a 144m budget is not even close to breaking even with how much promotion they did.

I had thought that even with the disaster of the box-office there would still be a sequel but I really do not see it happening at this point.

I ended up not going. I did a little research and I found their main number was the same number for a business that had some shady stuff about it on the Better Business Bureau. That company had a facebook page that only had one comment which was like "Please something has gone horribly wrong and I cannot contact anyone at the company." There were a few other things as well, but those were the two main ones. Not going was absolutely the right decision.

Enjoying fanfic

I've realized recently that it's rare I enjoy reading fanfic these days. It's not even that so much of it is ship or kinks I don't share, it's that it's just...not good.

I know it's wrong to expect professional quality from hobbyist work -- and that a lot of these writers probably ARE really inexperienced and need this practice...but I just can't enjoy it. It all just feels so fake in every way. From characterization to plot, dialogue and writing in general, it's just BAD.

And that makes me so sad, because I used to live for being able to see and hear more from my favorite characters, and now...it just feels like I've lost something. I don't know if it's always been this bad and I'm just now realizing it or if it actually used to be better.

So, everyone knows it's shitty when some fan takes a character you love and comes up with nasty headcanons about them, or interprets them in the most unfairly negative light possible.

But how about when a fan who also loves the character comes up with positive headcanons or interpretations of them out of affection for them...but the so-called "positive" interpretation is OOC, cringey, creepy, eye-rolling, annoying, or otherwise undercuts or diminishes the character, so regardless of how "positive" the fan's intent was, their headcanon annoys you just as much - if not more - than other fans' negative headcanons?

Mundane Misplaced Stress

I'm jumping on the old bandwagon and watching Stranger Things, and right now I'm way more stressed about all the unattended kids making dangerous life choices than about all the actual Monsters and Creepy stuff.

What about all y'all? Tell us about the thing you were watching/reading when you knew you were supposed to be stressed out about Thing A, but couldn't stop worrying about mundane thing B.

I'm following a Supernatural WIP called "With Understanding," where Dean kidnaps Castiel because he's his soulmate. I actually skipped past this fanfic several times because of the description, the warnings, and the crossover with Criminal Minds, but I eventually read it and fell it love.

New Deus Ex

Anyone played it yet? I've lost two afternoons in a row to it; it might be the best DX gameplay since the original. They even brought back multi-tools!

They're definitely not subtle with the racism allegory, though -- not that Deus Ex as a series has ever been subtle. A little bit of Holocaust allegory too -- what with setting it in Prague, which has a policy of forcing undocumented augmented people into a ghetto... called "Golem" at that.

I have an online friend, I'll call her Jay to keep her identity secret. She's had a lot of issues in her life where she'll message me that she's suicidal or really down and I talk her back up again.

But lately I'm seeing a pattern and it's bothering me. I feel like a huge asshole and that's why I haven't mentioned it to Jay.

First, Jay only messages me when she needs a talking up and never just to say hi or ask how I am. It's always about her.

Sometimes I'll be going to an event or doing an activity and I'll mention it on my blog the day of. And just as I'm preparing to get up from the computer to get ready or to leave, she messages me saying she's feeling extremely suicidal and wants to hurt herself.

I canceled my outings a few times for her. One time I skipped a concert I saved a year for because she needed talking up and I didn't want to leave her.

Sometimes I told her "I can't talk right now. I need to get ready and leave. I'm very sorry" and she left messages the entire time I was gone saying I made her cut or asking why I abandoned her.

She never messages me right before I get up to get ready if I don't mention the event at all.

Sometimes she kept me up all hours of the night talking her up; this only ever happened if I mentioned I had to get up early, and oh there's a "help me" message popping up as I'm about to close everything out. I was up until 4am with her once when I had to get up at 6 for exams.

Again, no messages if I don't mention I need to get up early.

The pattern is I get messages from her whenever I mention things going on and never when I don't. I feel extremely guilty when I have to tell her I can't talk right then.

My mind keeps telling me "what if this is the night she does it because I wasn't here?" At the same time, I'm beginning to feel like Jay is trying to monopolize my time so I can't enjoy going out, can't sleep well or can't be social unless it's talking her up.

What should I do? Should I give her a cut direct and say "this isn't working, I can't keep doing this for you..." or what?

Not mentioning outings or early mornings has cut down on the messages a little. I still get them randomly. I'm terrified of being the reason she seriously injures or kills herself. As of now I spend more time worrying over her than I do my own IRL issues. I'm terrified to open my browser and find "Help me, where are you? I want to die now" because I feel so obligated to respond.

FS, am I being manipulated and what do I do if I am?
