I've played and beaten all of Where's My Water (and Perry and Mickey) and cut the rope (plus experiments and time travel) and I'm looking for another game in that vein.

Game fandoms not what they used to be?

Hurray! I'm here early!

Question for the gamer folks here: do you ever think we'll see another massive, wanky, Final Fantasy 7-esque game fandom again? Something that almost everyone has played and is invested in the story of?

I'm not so sure myself. I think those days might be over. Even the FF series has a strongly distinct set of fans, dwindling in proportion if not absolute numbers (the latest two Fallout games, for example, sold more copies than most recent FFs, and Skyrim outsold them by a landslide). The gaming population is too segmented, these days, and those few uber games (in terms of popularity) that still exist don't exactly have a "plot", per se.

I sometimes wonder if Mass Effect was the last gasp of a sprawling, dedicated gaming fanbase.

(I know there are a few of you.) When you're just starting out and haven't been published anywhere, should you submit to small/new magazines that don't offer any payment? Is it a good idea to just submit everywhere and get your stuff out there, or is that a waste of time?

A day late, but as promised, the Nordic kitten viking flag (and hopefully the coding works):



(I messed around with the colors for so long trying to get it to not look too much like any one of the flags, while still using the same colors. I wanted to use the old Kalmar Union flag, but apparently that's used by a minority somewhere today and I didn't want to steal it, and in the end I spent way too long staring at flags on Wikipedia, trying to find a combination that might actually work in reality, considering that it's a flag with a viking kitten and nowhere near that serious when it comes down to it).

To anyone else - erh hi. This makes sense if you were in our viking overlord thread the other night, if it doesn't make sense there's a kitten to make up for it?

Can Voice Casting Ruin Your Enjoyment of an Animated Movie?

I DVR'd Rise of the Guardians the other day since I've never seen it. Started to watch it and made a face at the TV when I realized Chris Pine voiced Jack Frost. Love Jack's character design, but even though I like CP as an actor, I've never liked his voice. I want to watch the rest of the movie, of course, but I really think I'd like it more if Jack had a different VA.

This ever happen to anyone else?

In principle, I support the right of every fan to create fanworks at their own level of skill and with however much effort they choose, because this is all for fun, and fanwork quality is largely subjective anyway.

In practice, I spend a lot of time shouting "Learn to spell!" and "That is an indescribably awful story premise!" and "Nothing about this is a good idea!" at my computer, and wishing I could throw things at the authors.

Bonus Secret: I deeply resent the avalanche of crap you get on Archive Of Our Own these days, and blame tumblr for being a bad fic platform and driving all the newbies there.

Actually, I don't get this feeling. Yugioh one of my main fandoms since ever, and I always openly admit this, which could be considered a little bit odd because I'm a full grown up woman who still loves all those teenagers dueling.

I started with DM, and now I'm in Zexal fandom. Also I never played any cardgames, and I'm here for the plot. Also, all my pen names are yugioh references in all fandoms I'm in.


I find a little bit upsetting when someone says this is a shame. And my fandom is not worse or uninteligent comparing which other fandoms who are considered for "growing ups" or intellectuals.

Also, I really don't get why people have the need to seem wiser lying about starter fandoms. Everyone start with something, and it's really stupid to hide your origins.

By the way, It's more likely a person starts with a considered "unintelligent" fandom (even though I don't agree with this term), cause usually, you are in your early teens when you first join it, so I find a little cheesy when a person try to play cool about it and lie.

So, don't be ashamed of who you are and your likes, anon. All this is a part of who you are, even though this is in past.
