"Normal" movies were more diverse in the past than they are now

Don't get me wrong -- when it comes to really unique movies, summer/winter blockbusters, adaptations of books/plays, and independent movies, we've been getting better and better. But so-called "normal" movies -- crime movies, comedies, movies about historical events, plotty movies with original plots that focus on the story, or most especially, romances -- things were a whole lot more diverse and interesting in the past.

There only seems to be two ways to make these sort of movies nowadays -- dumb OTT Apatow-ish comedy or pretentious, dull, faux-'realistic', dreary narcissism about some boring person's life. (Even movies whose premises are technically interesting generally get forced to conform to the second type as much as possible.)

Does anyone else agree, or have I just not been seeing the right movies?

I also think we're seeing less disaster movies, which is a pity.

There won't be one because case doesn't throw hissy fits. Nearly all comm implosions are at least 30% the fault of the mods.

I love The Godfather so fucking much.

First watched, I'm pretty sure, with my father, I was probably in junior high. Fairly certain I didn't make it all the way through that time - it was just too long - but I've watched it several times since, on my own, with friends, with my father, and once for a film class in high school. It is SO GOOD. The characters are so good, the cinematography is so good, and the feel of the setting, the feel that you're in the past in this specific subculture is so good. I like other gangster movies but none of them have anywhere near the beauty that Godfather has. Gosh do I love it. Every other scene in it is a bonafide classic. Sonny at the toll booth! Michael in the restaurant! Everything Clemenza does!

why english in anime and manga

i'm a big anime and manga fan and i just want to know why is it that often in anime, things are written in english? you'll see someone write their name on a pad (like in this week's jojo's bizarre adventure: stardust crusaders) and it will use regular roman spelling. even though the characters are japanese (except joseph and polnareff but they know japanese) and they're currently in pakistan. why wouldn't the names be written in kanji?

or when anime have english taglines, like this season's aldnoah zero, or anime op and ed songs that have english in them.

Almost Human. Why? Because it was a good show, with pretty good writing and an interesting premise. The relationship between Kennex and Doria was really good and had potential for so much more. I really enjoyed it and wanted more--but that's fucking Fox for you.

This is the second and half time I've been screwed over by watching a show on Fox--I watched Alcatraz and they cancelled it; now AH. The half is Firefly--only because I didn't watch it when it first aired, but still. I'm never going to watch a new Fox show again...it doesn't generally work out for me. (Okay, so they kept The Following but I'm not sure that counts as a victory.)

Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra: fandom edition

Create your own little list of fandom references that can be used in place of more specific english words or phrases. Like the language in the Star Trek TNG episode "Darmok."

If you haven't seen that episode, here are some examples so people know what I mean:

"Juliet on the balcony": romance

"Gilgamesh and Enkidu at Uruk": two people fight and then become friends

"Gretel and the stove": tricking an enemy into a trap

"The third little pig": the one smart guy among idiots

"Alice down the rabbit hole": suddenly thrown into a truly bizarre place or situation

"Not in Kansas anymore": far from home or anything familiar

A fandom example would be something like:

"The Daniel Jackson": apparently dying but then coming back/turning out not to be dead

etc.

Half my conversations with my fiance are pretty much fandom references to the level of Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra. Especially MST3k or actor specific references. But, they are very specific and have morphed from the original, so they wouldn't be helpful to this list. I just wanted to comment because I love shit like this.

So I really made this thread to ask this: Is calling someone a Philistine offensive? I've heard it used only a handful of times in the media, always to the effect of calling someone uncultured/uncivilized, essentially a barbarian. I've never heard anyone in real life use it to that effect or really anything besides to designate that someone is from that region, and that's why I ask.

There's a perception around here that saying "wahhh things were so much better in the good ol' days!" is stupid and erroneous and based more on rose-tinted memories than realism.

But be that as it may, people still have the tendency to feel this way about certain things, logic be dammned. Including YOU. So what "things were better in the good ol' days" fandom opinions do you have, even if you intellectually know your opinion is probably biased and not quite correct?
