Inspired by the first one

Crossover time! What have you crossed over, either in a fic or in your head? Or what would you like to see crossed over? This can be as silly or serious as you want.

Social Media Friending Policies?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So, F!S, I have a question for you: on whatever social media platforms you use, are you a friender/follower, or do you wait to be friended/followed? And if you are a friender/follower, how long do you have know someone before you connect with them? I'm asking because a friend (who is quite popular) recently told me she has a blanket 'never friend anyone first' policy on facebook, and it made me think about whether other people approach this kind of thing strategically.

If you don't use social media at all, feel free to post pictures of cats.

Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone been to this event? I'm considering going (good luck at getting a hotel room now, I know), and was wondering if anyone had a protips. I'm sure the crowds are insane, etc. Anyone live in Albuquerque and know of a great spot to see the balloons from without entering the park proper?

Sorry

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-09-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry for getting all angry over that anon yesterday. Looking back on it I sorta realized that I got kind of ...um obsessive about my position.

I'm such an idiot I can laugh off an accusation over the internet of being fat, but I get mad when someone tells me I'm trying to disguise my original work as fanfiction.

(I mean I still think the accusation's dumb tbh, but...eh nothing to get worked up over.)

I don't really care that some people don't like it...but I just don't like someone telling me "this is what you must be doing" I guess.

(plus the accusation of being 'in it for the pageviews' is kinda wtf because I'm really laid back about pageviews. I don't care if some people don't read it really I just write them for fun and post them for feeback from people who do like that kinda thing)

How I solve mysteries

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Story: *begins*
Me: Look at this character. If I were the protagonist, that's who I'd least suspect. There is absolutely zero evidence pointing to this person. It's gotta be them.
Story: *ends*
Me: Haha I was right

Wow.

I'm not sure if I'm more baffled by the spam emails I keep getting with offers to help me enlarge something I've never claimed to have, or by the fact that I've only just started getting them after 16 years on the internet.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-09-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a lenovo thinkpad and it has this annoying thing where thinks like screen brightness, microphone volume etc are keyboard shortcuts and then I accidentally touch those keys and whoops I'm just typing and suddenly I'm adjusting screen brightness. Any way to turn this off forever?

Depression

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my closest friends has fallen into a slump this year and has confided in me that they're pretty depressed. They dislike talking about their emotions and they let it slip during an argument. We were arguing over the fact that they don't spend time with me anymore, and for a long time, they made up excuses and were really dodgy about it.

I feel awful. I noticed a change and I asked them, like, hey are you okay? Personally? And they insisted they were, and they're always on about how I don't believe them about that stuff, so I dropped it. And maybe that was the right decision anyway, because I know having your depression thrown in your face isn't a good way to cope with it. I know firsthand what that can feel like.

But still, I do feel bad, because I've been so upset the past couple of months at my friend. I thought they liked me less, or found me annoying or whatever. And it was like, just drop me already if that's how it's gonna be. I tried to believe them when they said they were fine, so naturally I assumed the problem was me.

My own depression is very specific and not something others can easily help me with, so I can't offer anything from my experience. But I want to try and be there for my friend in a way that they can inherently understand I'm with them through thick and thin. Are there good generic resources I can take a peek at regarding this? Like how to help? I don't know if I can, but at the very least I can show I love them and am there for anything they need me for. I imagine there aren't any magic words for this kind of thing, but any pointers would be good. I feel like I've done a piss poor job at that lately, I mean I know my friend knows I love them, and I definitely understand that my love can't and won't be enough to make everything better. But I want to find ways that might help ease their burden. I'm doing my best, but maybe you guys can offer me advice that I haven't heard of yet.

I hope they already know, no matter how alone they feel, that they really aren't. But I'm doing such a bad job at conveying that. I feel like my presence makes things worse sometimes. Like sometimes I'll slip up and get visibly upset around them when certain things happen (in this case they're going to watch a movie with some friends even though I've been asking for months). So I still feel like their emotions aren't the only factor. I think it's still sort of me, in that regard. So if that's true then I'm doing something that... I could be doing better, I guess. I'm struggling with my own feelings but I refuse to burden my friend. I just want to help them somehow.

I'm really nervous about my class tomorrow, as it's with a teacher I've never even met (which didn't used to be uncommon, but ever since I locked in a major, it is). ratemyprofessors.com says she's nice and the class is really easy, but what if she's not nice and the class isn't easy? I have such bad anxiety problems, and sometimes teachers really bring those out for one reason or another, even when reviews imply that they're likely to be understanding, accommodating sorts.

It doesn't help that I read a creepy story about a student who can see lifespans and realized their teacher was about to kill them and the entire class. I don't think that'll be the case (and if it does, at least I won't have that horrible dread of knowing it's going to happen), but the story hit my "while I can't describe it in words, this is the kind of writing and/or concept that really creeps me out" button.

Fics that made you cry, redux

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the post from a few days ago, I read freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose and found myself very unexpectedly affected-- I'm normally not really into fic with major character death, past or present, as a theme (I'm a wimp), but this one really cut me to the quick (lots of gross happy/sad sobbing). Though much of that could be wine induced.

Anyways, I'd love to see more recs along the same vein-- which fics really impacted you emotionally? And, especially, unexpectedly?

These didn't necessarily make me cry, but they all really stuck with me in their own way:
Space, a Love Story (Teen Wolf) http://archiveofourown.org/works/502299
The Anatomist (Sherlock) http://archiveofourown.org/works/139351?view_full_work=true
But We Can Try (Avengers) http://archiveofourown.org/works/1727840
I love you like rlb (Avengers) http://archiveofourown.org/works/1651511

Thank you for the initial rec, elaminator :)

Goodbye, my friend.

[personal profile] cakemage 2014-09-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Earlier today, I had to have my twelve-year-old yellow lab, Mac, put to sleep due to cancer. We had made the decision to do so last Thursday, and the vet gave us meds to keep her comfortable over the weekend so that we could all say goodbye. I've had her since she was eight weeks old, when two ladies came to a car wash my youth group was holding, and had her in the car with them. Being the complete sucker I am for cuteness, I started gushing over her, and the women asked if I wanted her, as they only had her because they'd found her abandoned by the river. Obviously, I said yes, and took her straight home. Turns out, she had Parvo. She was a fighter, though (especially when it came to taking her meds...luckily I have a knack for giving recalcitrant animals their meds), and she made a fairly quick recovery. She ended up being the most loving, smart, fun, wonderful dog I've ever had, and I consider myself lucky to have had so much time with her, and that I was able to give her a happy, comfortable life and a peaceful end. Doesn't make it any easier, though. It feels so wrong not having her at my feet, grunting like a zombie as she chews her rawhide bones and occasionally trying to bite Pippin (one of my other dogs. He means well, but he's kind of a stupid pest, especially to her) whenever he tries to steal her chewies.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any cute pet stories/pics to share, 'cause I could use some happy right about now.

University rant

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in an advanced fiction workshop and I've taken this professor before and I liked him last time and he praised my work pretty highly but this time, it drives me absolutely crazy because he has kind of terrible taste. Like, he acts like any piece of shit published in a high end magazine is art, people should only write characters like themselves (as in, if you're a white male, you shouldn't write a black character or a female character). And then he gave this really wonderful story by a classmate a god damn 77%. This really pisses me off because he gave this other story, an absolute pile of shit, this rave fucking review. Even if he gives me good reviews on my work, it's not enough to negate his awful taste and his opinions that I seriously don't fucking agree with. I mean, Junot Diaz says that writers shouldn't stay in their comfort zone and they should practice writing characters who aren't like you because it's the only way you'll actually get better. Like this guy is a better writer than Junot Diaz. I'm so fucking done.

Book club: POLL and also some info!

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-09-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The book club poll for October is up! Link is here.

There are six books in the poll. They are:

Pyramids by Terry Pratchett - leftover from September

Red Sails in the Fallout by Paul Kidd - leftover from September

Little, Big by John Crowley - "It's the story of multiple generations of a large many-branched family in upstate New York, and their complicated and many-layered relationship with the world of Fairy. It's not too long but the story is a bit non-linear, and there are a few time jumps, and the things that have to do with Fairy are often presented in an almost half-hidden, corner-of-your-eye way, so there's parts that might be a bit of a slog. Still it's a fantastic book and I think would provide a lot of stuff to talk about."

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - "The future is a pretty bleak place, unless you're obscenely wealthy, except for OASIS: the virtual community built by a benevolent millionaire who makes it available to everybody free of charge. But he's also instituted a challenge -- and the first person to solve his riddles and complete his challenge based on decades of gaming and pop culture gets to take the reins. The story follows Wade (and some competitors turned friends) as they try to solve it while being hunted by a corporation that would do anything to win, own, and profit from OASIS."

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy - TW: GRAPHIC VIOLENCE - "The novel's set around the mid-1800s, and follows a protaganist we know only as "the kid" as he runs away from home and eventually falls in with a group of scalphunters. The novel is unflinching in its portrayal of what these people do, and the senseless deaths that surround them. ...there's no glorification or embellishment (whether positive or negative) of the violence. It simply just is, and in that way, is one of the most visceral descriptions of the pointlessness of war that I've ever read."

The All-Consuming Fire by Andy Lane - "Sherlock Holmes meets Doctor Who in a licensed BBC tie-in. From Victorian London to Deep Space this is one case that is anything but elementary."

Availability:

All books except the last one are available in my public library system (Indianapolis-Marion County Public Libraries; not the biggest but not a small system by any means) and on Barnes and Noble's web site. I was, however, unable to ascertain whether those books were actually available from B&N or only through their "marketplace", which I guess is sort of a B&N version of eBay. The reccer of the last book also notes that it is available on eBay and Amazon - I'd surmise that you can find any of these books there, since none appear to be obscure.

However, it's a good idea to research the availability of the book(s) you'd like to read before you vote for it/them!

Remember, you can vote for as many books as you want, but you can only cast your vote(s) once.

Some notes:

The number of recs we had dropped from a whopping 18 for the September poll to a measly six, only four of which were new, for the October poll. As such I'm going to lift the "one rec per person" rule for the November poll (which will go up in a few weeks). However, please be considerate - don't drop a ton of recs right away.

I also feel that interest in general is dying away and I hope that doesn't continue to happen. Here are a few other things I'm going to do:

+research availability of recced books and encourage readers to do the same, so we don't have another Plague Stone unavailability issue
+start the discussion post, beginning this month, with some discussion questions/potential topics (if anyone wants to suggest some to me feel free) - hopefully that will stimulate conversation. (I just ordered my copy of the book today - I was able to find a very inexpensive paperback - and I look forward to reading it!) I highly encourage everyone who is willing and able to read and participate in the discussion so we can keep the ball rolling and make it more interesting for all!

Speaking of the discussion date, I did some math and saw that I will probably be working on the last day of the month. As such, I'm tentatively going to push the September discussion to the date of Wednesday, October 1. My work schedule might change between now and then, so I'll update everyone asap if it does. Of course, we can discuss on more than one day!

As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated! Let me know if there's anything else that can be done to make the book club easier and more fun!
