Jordan McKee on Haven. Kept sliding further off the deep end for "good" and "bad" reasons (plot-wise), finally started to get her act together and removed herself from a bad situation, immediately got murdered to show just how crazy Newly Crazy Guy was, and went unmissed because she'd told people she was leaving town.

Weirdly specific versions of tropes you like

Sometimes, you like broad general tropes that can involve a lot of variation, like, for example, "mutually unrequited love." But sometimes you have a special interest in a very specific version of a trope, like, for example, "unrequited love where A is in unrequited love with B, then gets over them, and then B falls in unrequited love with A, neither of them realize the other one was ever in love with them." Or even more specific than that.

Do you have any examples of weirdly specific favorite variations of tropes like that?

Characters who are always portrayed badly in fanart

By "badly" I of course mean "badly, in your personal opinion."

What are some characters that fanartists seem to never manage to portray properly? Either because they always screw up some element of the actor's appearance/performance, or (for book fandoms) they always portray them like X when they're described as Y, or some totally different reason.

If it's an intensifier or a hedge word, I probably overuse it.

In formal writing, I have to edit out tons of 'moreover's and 'consequentially's.

I started using 'like' as a filler ironically when I can a teenager, and I still haven't been able to train myself out of it.

My buddies and I are playing a round of "Badfic/Sue fic bingo" soon (combined with drinking game). I've been put in charge of making the cards.

What are some common in story things in some of the most hilarious badfics and Sue fics you've read?

(note: "OC" is not an actual sign of badfic. It's too broad and considering every instance of even a major OC character a sue trope in itself waters down the meaning of the actual term. "Long lost sibling of the main character with tragic backstory" or something of that vein would be. Also no naming specific people we're talking about tropes)

We are reading Para Handy by Neil Munro for July. I want to ask about the date for the discussion. In June a lot of people requested we do a weekend, so I hosted it on a Sunday, but we did not have a higher turnout than we usually do on weeknight discussions. Does anyone have a preference for July? I could do a Sunday or I could do a weeknight (probably Monday), which would be the 31st or 1st. The 31st there is a birthday in my family but the official celebration for that is another night, so I don't think it would interfere. Feedback please! What is your preference?
