Secret 1 - Top Gear

Ever since the presenters and some of the production staff have been on twitter, I‘m more interested in learning how Top Gear is made than watching the finished episodes.

Bonus Secret 1: The BTS stuff has made me more interested in cars than the show ever did.

Bonus Secret 2: I‘m a bigger fan of Iain and Andy now than I ever was of Jeremy, James, or Richard.

Mary Sue fic (vent/advice)

I am in a miniscule fandom. It's really not difficult to be a BNF. I've been a medium-name-fan, and I'm pretty sure most people in the fandom would recognise my username. (That's not a boast, the fandom honestly is just that small and I'm very active.)

A BNF has been writing a fic for nigh-on three years. Very enjoyable, interesting protagonist, good examination of phobias and an inter-species relationship, and then... somewhere late on in the fic, it became a mess: the previously interesting, flawed protagonist became an utter Mary Sue, repeatedly treating the character head-over-heels for her like crap. He in turn became an OOC puppy to accommodate this. Rather than the char being chastised for her behaviour, anyone in the fic protesting is treated as an idiot, and to make matters worse, the author very obviously agrees with this. The fic has also become sluggish and bogged down in the relationship; now the UST is over, it's just become bad angst and bad porn. The character is semi-OC (customizable RPG protagonist) and is the author's baby - it's kind of embarrassing, tbh.

I can't say anything, a) because it would be cruel to her; her project isn't actually hurting me in any way, simply annoying me, and b) I would be crucified and accused of trolling by her and her large fanbase (many of whom are people I know and like) - I've seen it happen a couple of times. She's constantly being gifted fanart and being held up as some sort of talent; I think her drive and ability to engage readers died at least a year ago. I feel like it's just me.

Should I do anything, and anyone have similar horror stories?

use a sockpuppet and make sure to make the writing style is completely different from your usual one?

He did this retelling of Snow White from the queen's POV and I just felt... sketched out throughout. It was just so lurid, like, "sexual predator woman feeding on men", and I never bought his writing as the queen's voice. It was just off for me.
I'm super tired of male writers making a huge deal of how ~feminist~ they are, though. Go write your ladies but don't applaud yourself over it every time, FFS. (Looking at you too, Joss Whedon. del Toro's comments on Pacific Rim that everyone keeps fawning over, too. wow good job you wrote a woman as a human being.)

I don't quite see how it's creepy. One can still say that an author is a crap author, that their works are bad, that there are areas the works fail in - or what would reviewers do? I get how fanfic can work and serve as useful analysis (it was one of the main reasons I used to write it, after all).

While I do believe in Death Of The Author to a large extent - people can interpret things however they want, especially if those interpretations are due to the author's own failings in their writing - as long as there's actual evidence for that interpretation - I am also very aware that there is (or was at one point) someone out there producing the media I consume, with thoughts and feelings of their own.

Someone in the thread took my comments as saying that I think fanfiction is morally wrong. Here's the thing: I do. It's the closest thing other than plagiarism to actually stealing ideas. The way I see it, people have the right to have the final say over things that originated in their head and that they've sweated to make. I don't get what's so wrong with that.
