Which books, movies, etc. do you think get twenty-somethings fairly realistically, and/or which ones do you think get them pretty unrealistically? Or are somewhere in between?

Or just use this as an excuse to gab about your favorite media about twenty somethings.

The characters on Friends were supposed to be in their early to mid twenties the first few seasons, but they seemed way more "established" than most of the ones I know now (although it's also hard for me to believe they're in their mid 30s later on as they still act like they're fresh out of college). Some of this might be the difference between their and my generation, although I have a sister around that age and she and her friends weren't really "there" at their age either.

I actually think Death Note handles its brilliant teenage protagonist fairly realistically. Light does make some brilliant plans in the series, but he makes such emotional, egotistical, boneheaded moves as well that are typical of an adolescent.

His philosophy is also so teenager-y that re-reading it now, I can definitely tell why it was so popular with adolescents.

Some of it does stretch credulity though. Like Naomi. And there are moments that are just a tad too convenient for him. But I always enjoyed how the character was handled.

Glee has high schoolers acting more like college kids in some respects, imho. Being able to afford hotel rooms for quick hookups? Artie being surprised Rachel was a virgin? I know kids had sex in high school obviously, my friend was pretty much Santana, but... there's an adulthood about how stuff like that is approached. Not to mention the song choices, although I've since met 23 year olds (who would've been the kids' age when the show first aired) who know Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys, so I may be wrong about that one.

Doxxing in BioWare/Dragon Age Fandom?

I heard on Tumblr from a couple people I know that the BioWare fandom (likely the Dragon Age section) has been doxxing people for god knows what reasons. I had joked with a friend a while back that given how hair trigger, thin-skinned the Dragon Age fandom is, it wouldn't be long before they started doxxing people for stupid reasons. And now here we are.

For any FSers involved in said fandoms, is this true? Because if it is, I'm staying the fuck away from it for the rest of my life.

How did we end up here?

Digital piracy (not intended for the discussion of the ethical issues)

Hey f!s! I'm reading some research (http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/674020?Search=yes&resultItemClick=true&searchText=piracy&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Dpiracy%26amp%3Bacc%3Don%26amp%3Bwc%3Don%26amp%3Bfc%3Doff%26amp%3Bgroup%3Dnone - my apologies for the gigantic link) on digital piracy, specifically the bits pertaining to motion picture piracy. The paper seems to present some pretty solid proof (including reviews of the existing literature) that piracy harms sales, though there is one reference to a paper that says that it is only the digital sales that are harmed, not those of DVDs.

Does anyone have any comments on this/any further links to good research on the topic? Is it a generally accepted fact that piracy is harmful to movie creators? What about TV series? I have an academic interest in this as well as a personal one.

Is Walter Arndt's translation of Onegin copyrighted?

Sorry, I didn't really know where else to ask. I was thinking about making Arndt's Onegin available for download (since it is, as far as I'm aware, not yet available anywhere online), but I have no clue how to go about finding out if it's still under copyright. Is looking at a physical copy the only way? I read up on the US copyright laws, and it seems that in this particular case one can say nothing definite just by looking at the date&place of publication. It's 1963, and US, presumably (seeing as Arndt resided there), but I have no idea as to whether he ever applied for copyright renewal (which would be necessary for his translation to not be in the public domain by now). Any suggestions? Perhaps someone has a physical copy and can tell me the answer?

Hi, it's anon-who-told-a-pushy-friend-no to being housemates for a third time.

I'm due to move into new place in a couple of weeks. My current housemates are still hunting and I hope they find a place. They're married and now expecting a baby! It's early stages yet so they've not told many people.

Pushy friend, PF for short, called me up yesterday to tell me she's going to break up with her boyfriend. Because he's depressed over family stuff and won't see a counsellor. While she's also depressed and won't see a counsellor. I'm sure there's more to it.

She hasn't directly been asking me about my place but she asked about my current dudes moving and after permission I told her they can't take her in because expecting baby.
She's making snide comments about us not keeping promises (because 3 years ago we told her if her new bf of 2 months she's moving in with failed, she could move back in. But that was 3 years ago! They're expecting a bb and I have a tentative girlfriend (reminder: PF would get jealous of my friends and girlfriends ergo not wanting her in living in my house among other reasons))

I think she's realised she can't go on major rants about how shitty I am anymore because I will stop talking to her.

The thing units I do want to help and if she WAS homeless is put her up but I'm worried she'd never LEAVE. She keeps mentioning how helpful it's be to have her, I am tight financially and could really use some white goods, but I think it will cost me my sanity.

Because she's not even TRYING to find a new share house, she's jumping straight to complaining about safety nets and getting rid of cat. She just told me how she went around smashing all pictures of her and boyfriend - they're not broken up yet but I don't want that in my house. I can't deal with that. I've for my own problems I don't mention cause she'll use it against me.

I eventually directed her to online housemate hunting with a reminder of how easily I've found people to live with (with my pets in tow!). Hopefully she's looking cause she's not even trying.

I wish I could break this friendship off. But I think im her only friend? Everytime I try to pint out bad behaviour she turns it into me hurting her.she mentioned returning to her parents (another state) after her (becoming a doctor) ends and I'm hoping so much.

Asking anon cause my user handles are all linked together and I don't want her to find me.

Advice? Personal experiences?

Was anyone else into this in the late(ish) 90's to the early 00s? It was this site where you could post "diary entries" about random things. Sort of like Livejournal. The posts were usually pretty emo, and there could be quite a bit of what we'd now call cyberbullying, but it was fun. I was really into it in middle school, but stopped going after that.

Help Making a Decision

I've signed up for a Big Bang and I have two main ideas of what to write but not enough time to write both. My main concerns is having enough time to write it and how interesting others would find it.
1) Character A/Character B where A gets cursed and becomes sick, and B has to cure him. It's slash and shorter, and should hopefully be more about the development of the relationship between the two.
or
2) A/B/C as well as A/D, B/D and A/B/D. A goes on a quest to retrieve magic medicine. B helps him get to the medicine; C is imprisoned near medicine. A rescues C with B's help. D is the wife of A and D. Also, there's a curse and some other stuff. This is a fusion with the main fandom, and has het and slash. It's more of an adventure than a character study. Obviously, it's more involved and complicated but the fusion would allow for some flexibility regarding canon. I would be writing to deadline on this one and likely wouldn't have time for a beta.

Without knowing the fandom, which is more interesting?

If your dog has tartar on their teeth, is it always a better idea to get them scraped, or is scraping ever a bad idea (like, for an older dog, can it weaken their teeth badly?)
