Depressing Stream #1

So, because Noodles enjoys fellating me, this week he has turned the shitstream movie list over to me! This week, the movies will not be shit! However, because I am a harsh benefactor I have decided that he shall play only movies showcasing the darkest ennui this world has to offer. You're welcome.

First up will be a movie recommended by blessezmoi, guaranteed to make you feel either sad or claustrophobic*, or both. Starring Ryan Reynolds, directed by Chris Cortez, and with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%, it's:



Second on the docket is a fucked up psychological horror classic. Chock full of visuals that inspired the likes of Silent Hill and your second cousin's film school final project, it's Jacob's Ladder! It'll leave you wondering if reality is real and where the limits of sanity lie.

And to end things off, we'll be turning to a lighter note with Stephen King's The Mist. Most accurately termed an action horror, this film is really a commentary about what happens when small town mentality is reduced to life in a metaphorical petri dish on the verge of what might be the apocalypse. It's a personal favorite, and is definitely not to be missed.

Don't despair though, intermissions will be happy baby animal videos and heavy drinking so we don't all wind up crying into our safety blankets by the end of the night. Plus, as always, there's a porn parody for the after party and this week we'll be showing Tosh.Hole! Gay porn without skipping the sex scenes! It's a Christmas miracle!

So join us, won't you, for the first (and possibly last) time I'll be allowed to inflict my painful, painful film taste on the stream.

Out of Character

So, I've been thinking about this lately and I wanted to start a discussion about characterization that is out of character but still "legitimate" - i.e. the fics where a character is raised by different parents or where a crucial event did or did not happen to him or her. Or where you just genuinely like a character except for this one thing s/he does and purposefully ignore that.

For the characters you write, do you ever write them out of character on purpose? Is there a particular character flaw or attribute you ignore? Have you tried to explain away behavior you find inconsistent or just don't like?

Are there fics that have done a great job with an OOC character? Or other OOC characterizations that you approve/understand? Perhaps even prefer? What about the original character attracted you to him/her? What traits do you need to be consistent where anything else could change?

Basically, what are your thoughts on OOC?

I have a close friend who is in the same graduate program as me - it's a pretty difficult program, and does require a lot of research and studying. I manage okay, but my friend is not doing well. She does cram super long study sessions and has put plenty of work into her studies, but she's drank and partied a lot of her year, too (subsequently coming to class wasted on a few occasions) - coupled with the fact that professors have recently suggested she might be dyslexic, she's had a hard time even getting barely passing marks. We're having exams and getting marks back on essays now and things are not looking well for her.

I want to reassure her, tell her she's going to be fine, and kill the rest of her courses, and write an awesome dissertation, but I'm not sure that's true. We just took a test that she's pretty sure she failed, and I'm pretty sure she did, too, so I don't know what to say to that.

She's really upset and emotional right now, and I want to help her talk it out and make her feel better. But what do I say? I'm afraid to tell her she's definitely going to pass the program because I'm not sure if she will, and I feel like my reassurances will only hurt worse if she doesn't - and if she does fail, what am I supposed to say then?

So basically, how to you help reassure a friend in need of kind words, when you can't genuinely say anything optimistic to them?

Unlikable Characters

I watched Sideways for the first time yesterday and it was almost unbearable for me. The characters were just SO DAMN UNLIKABLE. It was basically a movie about a depressed asshole going on a drinking holiday with his sleazy asshole friend.

Today, I watched (for the 8 millionth time) Reservoir Dogs, a movie that I LOVE. And that movie is full of assholes! I even HATE some of them, so it can't be that they are likable assholes.

It got me thinking:

Why do some unlikable characters make a movie unbearable, while others are just fine?

Are there any movies you can't stand because the characters are so unlikable? Are there others that you love despite the characters you hate?

Reader Insert, Second Person POV fic

So, I'm op of that WWE secret the other day in which Randy Orton was my Master and I his pet. Some people said they'd actually be interested in reading a fic like what I'd described (master/pet play, gangbangs, aftercare, etc.) So, I started writing it. I've written several thousand words in second person, as a reader insert type story. But, now I'm reconsidering.

So, I'm curious. When you read AU kink fic like this starring, what is essentially a reader insert, do you mind second person POV and the use of "You," or do you prefer the author to do another POV and create an OC?

(I've never written fic like this before!)
